Do we worship Mary?

Depends on how the Latin colere is translated. The Vatican website actually translates it as “worship” but it could mean “honor” or “respect” as well. The general idea of “cultivate, till, tend” should be conveyed IMO. Whatever, the honor we bestow Mary should be distinguished from the one that we bestow on God.

No we don’t worship Mary, we love her as our Mother and as Mother of our Savior.

We honor her only in as much as God honored her, sending the Angel to inform her that in God’s sight she was full of graces, and asking her to be Mother of His divine Son and redeemer of humankind. Amongst many billions of women throughout time, Mary was the woman God raised to the position of Mother of the divine Son
The honor is bestowed by God Himself, and we simply respect God’s assessment and God’s choice of Mary. Would it not be an insult to God to reject His predilection!

We acknowledge and follow Jesus’ lead in valuing her intercession, her prayer for us.
Jesus demonstrated that He valued Mary’s intercession, and responded positively to it, even when it wasn’t convenient to, and in his plan. See John 2 verses 1-11

When Mary put in her gentle request for saving the hosts of the wedding feast at Cana from an embarrassing social disaster, (as it would have been in that culture if a host family ran out of provisions at a wedding feast) though Jesus protested that it didn’t concern Him and it wasn’t yet time for miracle, He nevertheless worked the miracle at her request and trust, and turned water into wine so that the hosts did not run out of wine.

If it is acceptable to Jesus for His Mother to intercede for anyone, why would we not accept His example.

We love her whom Jesus loves dearly and whom the Father chose out of all women throughout time to be Mother of His divine Son.

For Catholic teaching regarding Mary…a link to the Catechism of the Catholic Church

May God bless you.

The etymology of the word "worship’ means ‘worth-ship’ or 'the state of being worthy.

That is why judges in Great Brittain are referred to in the courts as “Your Worship”.

Do Britons worship their judges, whom they address with the actual words "your worship?’

Do they?

If --as all but the most addlepated and ignorant will attest–the man and woman in Great Brittain do NOT ‘worship’ their judges despite referring to them with that title. . .

why on EARTH do they POUNCE on Catholics who with the SAME heritage and understanding of the ENGLISH LANGUAGE and the SAME historical reference points, use the word WORSHIP in regard to Mary in the SAME SENSE THAT MODERN BRITONS STILL USE IT IN REFERENCE TO THEIR PUBLIC FIGURES???:confused::confused:

I saw on This thread - forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=699428
People are saying we do worship Mary. I tried to correct them but I don’t think they agree.
I have read from Marian resources that Catholics venerate her by hyperdulia ( meaning esteeming her higher than other Saints) but I think people need to be careful about the word worship it makes Protestants believe wrongly.

Tantum Ergo- I suggest you look up the meaning of worship

Mary is not a deity and to go around saying we worship Mary you’re giving Protestants the wrong idea

If they think we think Mary is a god, and we worship her, then they’re acting like Muslims.

(Muslims tell us that we believe the Trinity is God, Jesus, and Mary.)

Hehehe,

I just asked a priest about this 1 month ago and he told me this.
NO we do not worship Mary And Even the prayer Hail Mary is not worshipping its just a different thing. We only worship God who includes Jesus The Father And The Holy Spirit. So we do not worship Mary.👍

Catholics can’t go around saying we do it’s adding fuel to the fire for Protestants

Not that in particular, but I’m familiar with the impoverished ignorance about Catholicism that John MacArthur has.

Let me quote you from another often cited encyclical that supposedly “proves” Catholics worship Mary.*to pastors and faithful there is nothing "more sweet, nothing dearer than to worship, venerate, invoke and praise with ardent affection the Mother of God conceived without stain of original sin. (Pope Pius XII, Fulgens Corona, 18)*Pretty incriminating, right? The cat is out of the bag! We are busted! We worship Mary! But no, in Catholic theology, such conclusions are without cause. Earlier in that same encyclical, Pope Pius XII says this:*Non-Catholics and reformers are therefore mistaken when because of this pretext they find fault with, or disapprove of, our devotion to the Virgin Mother of God, as if it took something from the worship due to God alone and to Jesus Christ. The contrary is true because any honor and veneration which we may give to our Heavenly Mother undoubtedly redounds to the glory of her Divine Son, not only because all graces and all gifts, even the highest, flow from Him as from their primary source, but also because “The glory of children are their fathers” (Prov. 17:6). (Pope Pius XII, Fulgens Corona, 15) *So you see how the Pope clarifies that use of the term “worship” regarding Mary should NOT be confused with the worship due to God alone. It’s something different. It’s not the same. It’s not idolatry. If one wants to properly understand someone’s communication, one should try to discern what the speaker is meaning by the words he is using.

What MacArthur does is interpret the Catholic speaker’s words in the way HE, MacArthur, would use the words, and NOT in the way the Church might use the words. He fails basic comprehension, particularly when there are varying contexts of meaning of the idea of “worship” such as latria, dulia, and hyperdulia.

Regarding MacArthur’s use of St. Alphonsus de Liguori, see Dave Armstrong’s discussion of the subject.

Finally, MacArthur’s whole beef with the Immaculate Conception is a different issue than idolatry, so it’s really faulty of him to include it there. But he has been known to completely fail to understand Catholic theology in the past. (examples-1, examples-2)

That’s interesting MarcoPolo- thanks for sharing 🙂
So Tantum Ergo- you were right!!!🙂
According to that Pope.

Answers.com can publish any definition they want but the Catholic Church is the authority established by Jesus Christ on matters of faith and morals. Answers.com does not speak for God. The Catholic Church however is the mouthpiece of Christ.

The word Worship simply means to give someone the reverence and respect that they are due by right. That is what the word worship means, regardless of what answers.com says.

God deserves the worship of adoration. Mary deserves the worship of veneration. A Federal Court Judge deserves the worship of respect.

The issue is not what Protestants think, but Catholics allowing Protestants to control the conversation and define what the word worship means.

Yes Tim, I am a newly Confirmed Catholic and I’ve had Protestants get fired up to me about this quoting Bible verses etc and it scares me. I’m glad that I know the real teaching now.

:tiphat: It’s always important to read the context to see in what way the word is being used.

Not really. It wouldn’t have been a problem had they used the cognate of the Italian translation.

*onorare, venerare, invocare e predicare *

instead of

“to worship, venerate, invoke and praise”

You were on the right track, though. 👍

Thank you I’m glad you checked that out. You see how the translator of the Vatican website’s English translation used the term worship to translate those words (I presume the original is in Italian and not Latin, which is why you pointed that out?). And of course, you are correct, the point remains the same - whatever term is used by the Church to describe Marian devotion, that term must be understood as something distinct from the worship due to God alone. :o

My dear Christine, you did not understand my post. I am not giving Protestants the wrong idea --and my definition of the meaning of worship is quite correct '‘worth-ship’ . . .there is nothing about ‘worth ship’ which indicates that it is to be offered to God alone as the word was understood up to the 18th century or so. And is still understood in Britain–I note you did not address a single word about my passage regarding British judges nor did I say we worship Mary as a deity.
