What kind of guy is setting up a date if his car doesnāt work? Canāt you just ask her friends what she likes to do? What kind of guy is going on a date if he is broke? Get advice from her friends. Thatās easy.
I dated about 5 women before I met my wife, and let me tell you, it might be trickier than you think.
As a guy, I usually set up the dates. But I always tried to find the right balance between being 100% in control (and seeming, perhaps, domineering) or going out of my way to make sure it was the girlās dream date (and seeming, perhaps, unconfident and āweakā).
If you know a few of her friends, all well and good. But, you might not.
However, letās say you do. I once took a girl on a first date, and inquired with her friends (that I sorta knew in advance) about where she might want to go for dinner. I kid you not, they couldnāt even decide if she still was (or
ever was) a vegetarian. One suggested it, then another said she likes steak⦠lol. What the heck?
Even if you figured out what kind of cuisine, thereās the matter of what price range you want to go for. Do we go to a casual restaurant? Does that make me look too cheap?
Or do we go to a fine dining establishment? Does that make me look like Iām going to be showering her with fancy French food throughout our relationship, when I canāt afford it? Could it make me look like Iām coming on too hard by blowing half a weekās paycheck on a single dinner?
Even paying for something can be difficult. Almost every girl I took on a first date attempted to pay half of her bill. But of those girls, they basically broke down into two groups: the first group was making the attempt to be polite, on the assumption that I may/may not have enjoyed the date. In the end, the first group
wanted me to pay the full bill and would think less of me if I didnāt.
The second group, however, were girls that actually got offended if you tried to pay the whole bill. In their view, a date (especially a first date) was a mutual learning experience, and it was insulting to imply that they could not afford to pay their part of the tab.
Hereās another thing. On two of my first dates, I tried giving them a single white rose. One absolutely adored it. The other was, as far as I could tell, a little creeped out that I may have thought we were āfurtherā in our relationship than we really were.
Another thing about asking friends questions. Sometimes I didnāt have friends of hers to ask, other times I did ask, sometimes maybe I asked a bit too much. Thereās a balance again there too, I always wanted to plan a date that the girl would enjoy, but worried if I made it ātooā perfect as she imagined it, then she would wonder where I got all of this information, figure out that I grilled her friends, and then feel like maybe Iām an obsessive stalker or something.
Finally,
there are plenty of men that go on dates that arenāt loaded with money! Or that have occasional car problems! Are you kiddinā me? You think we all have had fluffy office jobs our whole lives? Some of these men are called ācollege studentsā or āgrad studentsā, entry-level retail workers or waiters! Others are, well, look at this economy in the States (and elsewhere.)
Thereās no encyclical that says being poor or in the working class is an impediment to discerning the vocation of marriage!
