In Matthew 16:21-23, after Jesus has spoken the famed words to Peter in verses 16-19, Peter makes a big boo boo.
“From that time forth, Jesus began to shew unto his disciples how that He must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised again the third day. Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, be it far from thee Lord, this shall not be done unto thee. But he turned and said to Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence to me: for thou savorest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men” Matthew 16:21-23
My point is, even Peter can err. So, our trust should be in God, and not in men (Jeremiah 17:5), not even the church! Jesus never said that we can put our faith in the church, or in Peter. He said the gates of hell will not prevail against the church. But what makes a church? “When more than one are gathered together in my name I am among them” Matthew 18:20
“For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” 2 Corinthians 5:1
If our trust is in man, God forbid to the point where we could say “i beleive everything he teaches”, we are bound for deception. Even Paul himself said not to beleive any new gospel, even if he himself brought it to us (Galatians 1:8)
