Do You Believe in Apparitions?

If you want some more information on Apparitions, here is a site:

It is not an exhaustive list but it clearly states which ones are not approved.

I find Zeitun (approved both by the Coptic and the RC Church) particularly interesting because she appeared to everyone. The apparitions were also shown live on Egyptian television at the time, the last one occurring in 1971. Unlike other apparitions, there were no seers, no message but she appears at the church that was built on the place where tradition says was the Holy Family stayed when they were in exile in Egypt. I believe that they happen and will continue to happen until Christ comes again. I also believe it is wise to wait for official Church approval before delving into any messages.

Here is another one but it also includes other supernatural phenomenon. like stigmata besides apparitions. Some are approved and some are not but they are clearly labelled. It might be good to know which ones to avoid until such time as the Church speaks.

Of course I believe in Apparitions!Theres been loads of them in recent years! Our Lady appeared at Lourdes, Mexico, Fatima, Medjegorie, and even county Mayo in Ireland!!! I think its fascinating.Theres been lots of other Apparitions too!

Sorry but she did NOT appear at the Med place you mention and we cannot discuss that as it is a banned topic in these forums.
 
Yes they’re Biblical, just like the Angel Gabriel, but some are from God and some from the devil so we need to be careful, satan can transform himself into an angel of light, so let the Church decide.
 
For me, I’m a little ambivalent to apparitions. I think that is one side that is not very Catholic-ised yet.:o I mean I’ve read about them, and know about them, but they don’t form a big part of my spirituality- I don’t pray the rosary because OL Fatima requested it but because I want to honour God through the Mother of God. Even the Sacred Heart-I am extremely devoted, even with the First Fridays-but somehow the apparition to St. Margaret Mary has not really entered my consciousness. What I do doesn’t really revolve around that. For me, it’s more like: Church disapproves, avoid, Church approves, ok. Don’t know whether I’m starting to ramble so I’ll just shut up now.

I believe apparitions occur, but that the majority of them are intended for no one but the viewer involved.
 
Does anybody think its a bit unfair that a select few people in this world have apparitions? They basically get there faith handed to them on a silver platter, answering any doubts about theism or the faith they have chosen. Especially in this day and age when catholicism is getting harder to follow for the younger generation.

Firstly there are a lot of false apparitions out there, so if an apparition happens it often takes years or decades to discern whether it’s a true or false one.

Secondly, many of them (Lourdes, Fatima, the Sacred Heart and Divine Mercy apparitions) are accompanied by difficult requests, difficult tasks, a lot of hostility and even illtreatment of the visionaries.

So any way you slice it there ain’t nothing being handed to anyone on a platter - a large price and a lot of pain and doubt comes with it!

The belief is already there and the Lord leaves room for faith. Tim
 
I have no problem believing that apparitions occur. If our Lord was powerful enough to raise from the dead, he is indeed powerful enough to appear to chosen persons or allow his own mother to do so. I do, however, use caution and I would never base my whole Faith on any apparition. If it turned out that Fatima was one big fat lie from Satan, it won’t change anything for me.

You seem to be assuming that apparitions are few and far between, and that they automatically encourage faith. Those are both bold assumptions.

Many times people keep them to themselves, think they are crazy, perhaps hallucinating or even being tricked by demons. Most people don’t feel worthy of an apparition and tend to think their experiences can’t have been genuine…because they are just a normal person, not a saint, no one special, etc.

In a culture that mocks faith and religious practice, it is even harder for many to accept what they experience. They can’t share it with anyone for fear of mockery, or being considered a holy roller or insane. Often not even with a spouse. I know of people who shared with their confessors and were harshly criticized. (some saints are in that category).

People who see them, are often persecuted, their lives turned upside down, inside out, have others accuse them of lying, seeking glory, bragging, etc.

Can you imagine how humble one must be to ask for something like that? If it were to happen to you on some small scale (like having a wing of a hospital named after you) it could be almost embarrassing, humiliating even. Espcially if it out of proportion to what you have done in comparison to Others.

That’s very slippery reasoning 🙂 - if humility can look like pride, how does one recognise the one from the other ?​

It’s like saying that an axe-murderer’s seeming cruelty shows how soft-hearted he really is - if something looks bad, that is usually because it* is* bad.

It is possible that that part of the message was “scrambled in transmission” - this is not something that books about apparitions often (if ever) mention, but it’s perfectly possible. Father Poulain, who is one of the auctores probati on this subject, discusses this feature of the reception of visions & the like at some length (he wrote a while before the events of 1917).

Why would Jesus Christ work through Mary in that way, rather than through the usual means, such as preaching ? That is an ordinary function of the Church’s sanctifying office: so wouldn’t giving the grace of moving hearts to priests, be a more efficient way of attaining the same end; instead of using apparitions, which are extra-ordinary ?
