That’s just what it says.

I guess if you decide all the bad bits are inaccurate, (the Bible being inspired but not inerrant) metaphorical, allegorical, or symbolic, and the good bits are literal, then you don’t have to bother trying to justify some difficult behavior, and can easily believe both Gods described in the OT and the NT are the one loving God.

In the book of Job God told Satan to inflict suffering on him.

God is the one who requires us to carry our cross. REQUIRES. No choice.

Folks who place themselves in risky situations have much higher probability of being injured or killed. With free will we have some amount of control or choice in how we lead our lives. But the choices we make may determine what probabilities our fates may follow.

AS Jesus says, our lives may be determined by God (not a bird falls form the sky unless God wills it), but IF we freely choose to do rsiky things, God may let chance determine that our lives would be much shorter or more painful than if we choose less riskier endeavors.

In other words, I do not think God controls every little thing that happens to us all the time. I think He allows chance or the laws of probability, or our own skills and resources determine what does happen in most situations. The exceptions may be when we or others pray for help or deliverance in dire situations. Such events may include our guardian angels protecting us from highly likely death or injury in times of war (of course this is not always the case, since many deaths and casualties still occur)…

A number of years ago I came across a great little book that sums things up:
Trustful Surrender to Divine Providence

GOD CONTROLS ALL EVENTS, WHETHER GOOD OR BAD

Nothing happens in the the universe without God willing and allowing it. This statement must he taken absolutely of everything with the exception of sin. ‘Nothing occurs by chance in the whole course of our lives’ is the unanimous teaching of the Fathers and Doctors of the Church

, ‘and God intervenes everywhere.’**
Why does God take this role? For the good of our immortal souls.
No matter how you voted here or what your opinion may be, I strongly encourage all to get a copy of this book or at least read it on line. It is very profound.
