Do you believe in the Big Bang?

Some Christians (including Catholics) take a literal account of the Biblical creation. Although some do not believe in it, and some are undecided.

Which one are you? 😃

Life comes with a lot of books of instructions than. You should have provided more options because it makes the assumption that we all do believe in a God or one God. Of course I believe in evolutionary biology. And to all my Catholic buddies who don’t believe in the Big Bang, Georges LemaĆ®tre was an awesome dude šŸ˜‰

The best evidence we have from Science is that a Big Bang occurred some 13.7 B years ago…until more is revealed that is our best explanation of how the universe came into being. In my view this is entirely compatible with the creation story in Genesis.

I think the Book of Genesis is a literary description of Creation, not a literal account. The most important thing in my mind is that we simply don’t know for sure. We can think and believe, but only God knows exactly what happened and how. I think the Big Bang Theory has great scientific value, but again, all I really know is that it’s a theory.

I never said it didn’t. I just made that my signature because I hear a lot of my friends say ā€œlife didn’t come with instructionsā€, so I made it my signature as sort of a rebuttal.

Well, this post was geared towards believers in the Bible as a poll for them, to see how many take the Bible literally or not.

I do not believe that Genesis is an instruction book on how to make a universe. I believe God created the world in 7 days, but he also created the laws of science.

There is proof that the universe is expanding. If you reverse the process, we wind up with a tiny dot of highly compressed matter. The question is, what caused the expansion to start? God.

It’s kind of like God spoke and BANG everything happened. There are contradictions within the two creation narratives in Genesis, but I no longer find them problematic. My faith isn’t going to be crushed because of them, but we shouldn’t try to go to huge lengths to try to make everything fit into the tiny amount of things we know about the universe. Some things can be explained. Some can’t. We’re humans. We’re not meant to know everything. That’s God’s job.

You have to work on these polls, because your stacking the options haha. How about an ā€œotherā€ option? Or you could have very simply just made it a ā€œyesā€ or ā€œnoā€ question with nothing added to it. Yes would equal big bang, and no would equal everything else.

What other options can there be? It’s a yes or no or I don’t know question.

Undecided implies the only answers are either of the answers you have supplied, and the person is undecided as to which is correct. You specified that ā€œyesā€ means I believe in the big bang, and ā€œnoā€ means I believe in 7-day literal creation. I’m curious as to how specific your definition of the big bang is. I certainly don’t subscribe to the literal 7-day creation theory, but I also don’t buy much of the big-bang theory. I think the observations the big bang theory is based on are sound, but there is too much conjecture based from those observations. I’m sure 100-200 years from now the theory will end up being completely flipped over on its head. It seems silly to jump on board the ā€œinā€ theory of the day at this point.

Other options…

I don’t care…
or
The Big Bang is as good a theory as any…
Or
I don’t worry about it - We are here…Now what do we do…Oh yes - build the Kingdom.

I did not vote because basically I hold to the second and third ones I listed here.
I don’t believe in or disbelieve in the Big Bang theory nor am I undecided about it.
This is because a) my belief or disbelief changes nothing about the universe, b) my belief or disbelief has no effect on my walk with Christ, c) I feel no need to decide one way or the other for the previously explained reasons.

As to my view of Genesis, I think that it is a very good description in a very general and rudimentary way of the development of things. I see no reason to pit science against the Bible or to allow such things to disturb the peace of faith and fellowship.

Happy thanksgiving everyone.

Peace
James

Well, It’s a simple question for people who care, as a POLL to see what people believe. So this is aimed towards people who care.

Well if you don’t care, why post? It’s a simple question for people who care, as a POLL to see what people believe. So this is aimed towards people who care.
Go back and read the next sentence after what you quoted from him haha. He said his belief aligned with the 2nd and 3rd options…

Well obviously my question is answered now…and why the constant ā€œhahaā€ it’s childish and unprofessional to laugh at other people.

Having just viewed a Nova program on PBS talking about the hypothesis of a multiverse–a possibly infinite number of universes–which is supported by string theory and the concepts of dark energy and endless inflation, I’m more in favor of a multitude of big bangs rather than only one. This kind of multidimensional perspective does, I admit, put somewhat of a dent in one’s belief that our microscopically tiny Earth is the only place in which G-d revealed Himself. Perhaps I’ll begin another thread on this topic.

Gee - I’m sorry - It wasn’t clear that this thread is only for those who careā€¦šŸ˜¦

Now I feel left out…:bighanky:

Oh well…Hope all have a nice Thanksgiving…gobble gobble

Peace

Awww, Sorry. 😦 I mean, I want to see which more Catholics believe what that’s all.

The jurisdiction, or realm of study of the natural sciences is the physical universe, time and space. The data that we experience through our physical senses, and instruments that magnify them are what we examine in an attempt to understand the physical universe. The scientific method defines how science must be conducted, the methodology that must be followed as we examine the universe. We have a hyposthesis, collect data that supports or refutes an experiement. The results must be repeatable. If they are we can have a theory that might be true, but also might be proven false at some future time.

The skeptics of the Age of Reason said we can know nothing beyond that which we can experience through our senses. Anything else is unreasonable speculation. Therefore we can know nothing of a spiritual dimension if one exists. Revelation is ruled out as a means of knowing.

But now we have theories of parallel universes, other realities which we can not experience with our physical senses postulated not by empirical sensible data, but mental or intellectual speculation.

Science, by its definition of itself, can never claim anything for certain. Theories are theories. Einstein postulated that nothing could have greater speed than light. Most recently scientists think they have measured the speed of neutrinos and they travel at a rate of speed that is faster than light. Could be! Even in its jurisdiction of study, the material universe, science can offer no certain truth about big bangs or relativity. Einstein and others, up until the big band discovery thought the physical universe is eternal. Matter always existed. It just keeps colliding and reforming stars and galaxies. The Big Bang says there was a beginning and it is visible in its afterglow.

Science, a study that claims to offer no certain truth, only theories about what exists inside time and space, has become the arbiter of truth for modern man. How bizarre! Where this leaves us is not being able to know any spiritual truth, because we can not do repeatable experiments and collect data beyond sensory experience, and we also can have no certain truth even about the material universe, but only speculate with theories that migtht or might not be true.

We know by faith that the physical universe was made. It had a beginning. God made it all. When some scientists first proposed that the universe exploded out of a pin point and is still expanding from the force of the explosion the idea was ridiculed. They claimed there was evidence supporting this position. But if it is true then all thinkers from Aristotle to Einstein are wrong. The evidence for this hypothesis was being presented at a conference and a doubter said, so what are we supposed to call this crazy new theory, a big bang? The name stuck. Very scientific, no?

I’m not a Catholic, but I voted ā€œyesā€ since it is the best approximate answer available. I think the Big Bang is currently the best available model that accounts for the the arrangement of matter in the universe. Holding something as provisionally true isn’t quite the same as believing.
