I am so tired of being accused of bashing Mary. Jesus was and still is sinless, that is why He went to the cross to die for sin. Mary didn’t die for sin.

to fb19, only Jesus was sinless, that is why He went to the cross and died for the sins of the world. Mary was never sinless, she did not go to the cross to die for sin.

to karebear92. I am not catholic, I don’t have to be catholic. I don’t have to be protestant, baptist, hindu, etc. I am a born again saint bczu His saving blood sacrifice will take me to heaven.

I never said you did. I was just trying to clarify. Sorry if I offended you.
If you start another thread on Mary, however, I would love to participate. Are you saying that you are a saint?

The Pope is a human being, and therefore is not sinless. The only human being to be sinless is the Blessed Virgin Mary.

As stated before, the Popes are infallible when teaching faith and morals, but they are not sinless and they do go to confession.

to karebear92. yes I am a saint. but don’t worship me. I was a sinner who fell, but got up bcuz of His mercy toward me through His saving blood sacrifice. I can still sin, but the bible says that Jesus is my all forgiving advocate, but this does not justify me sinning whenever I want to.

to AG. If Mary was sinless all her life even when she was conceived in her own mother’s womb, then Mary would have been crucified and not Jesus. You are putting Mary above Jesus everytime you say that she was the only sinless human. Remember Jesus had a human side to Him also. Jesus was absolutely sinless in His human side and in His divine side.

Why does Mary being sinless mean that she had to die on the cross? I don’t see the logic there.

And what is your definition of a saint? Am I a saint?

Of course we believe that Jesus was sinless in His human nature as well as in His divine nature. Mary was solely human, like us, and thus could never rise above God Incarnate, the son she was privileged to bear.

Mary could not have died for the sins of humanity, even under Catholic thinking. We teach that she was spared from Original Sin and given the grace to avoid actual sin because of Jesus’ death on Calvary – much like the rest of us Christians, but in a special and anticipatory way (since, in terms of time, Jesus of course had not died yet when Mary was conceived).

To Catholics, Mary is a human being who was given special gifts and graces by God, not because she did anything to earn them (how could she, when the gifts were bestowed from the moment she came into existence?) but simply because God chose her for a special role in the plan of salvation. Mary is not some kind of replacement for Jesus or a perfect human who didn’t need Him, but the single greatest example of salvation by God’s unmerited grace alone.

Saints aren’t worshipped. Just so ya know.

I haven’t been here long enough to post a poll, so please answer in the thread with comment if you don’t mind.

I was in conversation with a “non-denominational” Christian Pastor about the Eucharist and discussing Scripture passages when I was challenged about the Pope. The Pastor assured me that the vast majority of Catholics believe that Popes are sinless and perfect.

And, in fact, became a bit angry when I said I knew a whole forum of Catholics and I was pretty sure they would not agree. But what do I know, I haven’t asked. So I am asking in order to collect a bit of data.

Please say if you believe Popes are sinless.
Popes are not sinless, and as others have said, Popes can be quite deeply sinful at times.

Consider Saint Peter. He was the first Pope, yet he was clearly a common man for some time before Jesus chose him as one of His Twelve. Peter was a sinner, yet he was still made the first Pope by Christ. Now, here is the important part to consider: many non-Catholics think that the charism of infallibility equates to being sinless–it does not.

Hello welcome to the forums:)
Please provide evidence of your claim.
And no the pet scripture verse isn’t evidnece. Why? because of the fact that there are people who seek God
The grace of calvary was applied to Mary when she was concived so thus she was/is sinless.

Still haven’t shown anything in defense of your claim that Mary sinned.:)bc we both know you haven’t a shred of evidence for this claim.
And the fact Christ was sinles has nothing to do with the reason for His sacrifice on calvary.
btw it’s an L not a 1:)

The pope is a human being, therefore he sins, mostly likely daily just like every other human on earth. Oh, and I’m catholic. so add me to the list of those who prove your pov.

mary irenre, JESUS’ death on the Cross anticipated Mary’s FULLNESS OF GRACE. That is the core value by which she is important because HE gave her the fullness of Grace. Use your brain; How could she be overshadowed by the Holy Spirit since JESUS had not died yet and sent Him at Pentecost. JESUS and the FATHER and HOLY SPIRIT are outside human, clock time. Therefore they act and operate in Eternal Timelessness.
AS TO the non-denominational born-again post-er. BRILLIANT minds, very holy scholars and Church Councils guided by the promissed HOLY SPIRIT define and decide what JESUS teaches. Our puny tiny minds alone cannot determine that. Of all the non-denominational preachers and believers I have heard, talked with or taught in University as a Humanities professor here is my summary: they have a tiny bracelet of false understanding of the Bible, the role of the Pope and bishops guided by the Holy Spirit, the honour we give to Mary, praying to statues, the forgiveness of sins- read John 20 and the saddest denying THIS IS MY BODY/BLOOOD for the Eucharist. I have a very high IQ, very well educated and a firm beleiver but I would never, never dare to contradict anyhting officially taught in the Bible or believed by Jesus’ Body the Church. I can list the chapters and books that flatly contradict evangelicals and show that the three main 16th century Revolt-amationists believed and taught what evangelicals deny today. .

I never said that Mary was above Jesus. I said Mary was sinless. This Catholic dogma is called the Immaculate Conception of Mary. In other words, she was concieved without original sin.

The Immaculate Conception of Mary does not mean that Mary doesn’t need a Savior. Mary herself said:
"And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour." (Luke 1:47) Douay-Rheims Bible

Jesus is Mary’s savior. She was prevented from falling into original sin by the grace of God. The rest of us are born with original sin and therefore we need Jesus in order to save us from our sinning ways. Mary was saved from God before sinning.

And, preserved by God’s grace that way throughout her life!

No, just look at the first Pope, St. Peter, he was certainly sinful and denied Christ. Your “non-denominational” Christian Pastor is very misinformed. The Authentic teachings of the Catholic Church are contained in “The Catechism of The Catholic Church”. Tell him to show you in the Catechism where that teaching is.

Popes are sinners like the rest of us. I was never taught anything else.
