Again…your misunderstanding the words he used there…(as too did I…I should note)…

he is not saying it is a theological opinion the way such words are used normally…opinion here it is just a translation of the word SENTENTIA …

The theological notes that he is using from the text from the 1950’s are not speaking of “opinions” in that way…they do not mean what we mean normally when we use the term…

It is not meant to transform the doctrine regarding the intrinsic evil of contraception into an “opinion”

And again setting aside Ott…we turn to the language of the Church as she indeed teaches.

And she makes it very clear that this is the constant teaching of the Church…

It is one that is is to be held as definitive.

And turning to the document from the CDF…one can see the various kinds of teaching that the Church has included in the Professio …and the explanation of such.

And the kind of assent to each the faithful are to give.
Yes, the usual understanding of the word “opinion” is certainly not strong enough for what is intended in the article. That is a given.

Also, I read the whole Professio document and saw nothing that contradicts what the Father wrote in his article. And I think you have your dates mixed up. The Professio document came out a year before the Father’s article was published, so he certainly would have been aware of it at the time he wrote it.

.
It does not mean some subjective opinion…the way we do…

Also, simply because the Professio used the word “definitive” to describe the teachings belonging to the second category and the same word is used in the CDF document is not indicative that the Church is claiming that this teaching belongs to either the first or second categories. The Church has not done so, and would not just “slip it in” to a guide for confessors as a means of inflating the teaching to something divinely revealed (unless they were being very sneaky). You are making a rather large leap here.

I believe this is what is referred to as “creeping infallibility”.

You have to set aside what you read in the article from the 1990’s (based on a work of theology from the 1950’s)…

when picking up the very clear and wonderful document…for they are different animals.

The article actually that Father published was published prior to the document.

You noted above that it was 1991 and I discovered it was a bit later but still* prior* to the release of those documents…his article is from a different place than that CDF document…

and of course the CDF document of is of extreme weight in the Church. It represents what the Church teaches and requires.

The Church knows very well the language it uses…

Bl. Pope John Paul II expressly noted to a conference:

“The Church’s teaching on contraception does not belong in the category of matter open to free discussion among theologians. Teaching the contrary amounts to leading the moral consciences of spouses into error.” L’Osservatore Romano, July 6, 1987

I’m sorry, I meant that the article was publIshed in 1999, so yes, he would have read the Professio.

Actually it was put online (that is what that note there means) then

but the article is from 1995 …

prior to the professio doc…

Not sure where you got that…either way, I don’t see what difference it makes since the article doesn’t contradict anything from the Professio.

The article and the CDF’s document on the Professio are two rather different animals.

But anyhow have a great night…got to head to bed soon.

Oh wait…one other quote I forgot that is great:

There are not enough choices here …
How not, it’s either yes or no? No fence sitting on this one.

What other choice could there have possibly been? I was not interested if one was practicing ABC or not.

God bless.

What exactly are ABCs?
Artificial Birth Control, - the pill, anything that you insert in your body that does not belong naturally there, those kinds of things, any surgical operation that renders one sterile. I am sure there are more methods out there, but these are the ones that pop foremost to the front of my mind at this late hour.

God bless.

Since there has been this discussion about the ban on contraception, specifically on what level the ban is categorized, I"ve started to wonder if perhaps the milieu is changing in regard to how people want/need to hear about moral prohibitions.

Perhaps previously, people asked, “Is it wrong?” They were told yes, and that ended the inquiry. People accepted that answer, and either proceeded with the action regardless or avoided the action. But nowadays people ask, “Is it wrong?” They are told yes, and then they further ask a question like this or similar, “But is it going to always be wrong, or is there a chance that it will be okay in 50 years?”

The different question could cause a refined response, thus raising the level upon which a moral prohibition is categorized, perhaps?

I guess I’m suggesting that for all I know, a particular moral prohibition is part of Revelation (and of course has thus always been so), but nobody asked about it before, so no one before now bothered to respond by saying yes, it is.

Though it is important to note that the Church Artificial Birth Control is really not the best term to use…rather “Contraception”…for it is not the ‘artificial’ part that is the problem…but the contraceptive…(see Compendium for example). (this also not to say that there is any ABC that is not contraceptive…)
