Do you believe this? Really?

Mike,It isn’t gnosticism to say that God is above corporeal existence, egress and regress.
Actually, it is. The gnostic world-view, which Bahá’u’lláh apparently incorporated into his own, is that God would not assume corporeal form, as it was beneath Him. Catholics accept that God, through his creation of the universe and his Incarnation into it, sanctified the physical world. It is why we have promoted its study through science, AMDG.

What is our evidence for this claim that God is somehow above corporeality, other than Bahá’u’lláh’s assertion? Logic does not lead us to that conclusion. How can we place any constraints on God’s power? If God wants to enter into the world of flesh, who are you (or Bahá’u’lláh) to say that He could not, or would not?

Bahá’í writings often assert that one must be discerning and use reason to find the truth among the disparate writings of the different faiths, but it seems to me that many of the beliefs they promote cannot be deduced from reason or logic, and are simply based on the assertions of one man. If you credit that man as a manifestation of God, fine, you’ll accept his views. I do not.
The understanding is that of the sun which does not physically come down to earth, but is always infinitely beyond human contact. The perfect mirror reflects the sun perfectly, but remains a mirror. The Manifestations are these Perfect Mirrors which reflect God’s Light and will, the means by which He communicates to mankind.
I realize you are using a simile to make your point, but it’s not a very accurate one from a scientific standpoint - the sun will eventually expand and consume the entire earth, and any humans remaining on it, if the Second Coming does not arrive first.
“Know thou of a certainty that the Unseen can in no wise incarnate His Essence and reveal it unto men. He is, and hath ever been, immensely exalted beyond all that can either be recounted or perceived. From His retreat of glory His voice is ever proclaiming: “Verily, I am God; there is none other God besides Me, the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. I have manifested Myself unto men, and have sent down Him Who is the Day Spring of the signs of My Revelation. Through Him I have caused all creation to testify that there is none other God except Him, the Incomparable, the All-Informed, the All-Wise.” He Who is everlastingly hidden from the eyes of men can never be known except through His Manifestation, and His Manifestation can adduce no greater proof of the truth of His Mission than the proof of His own Person.”
Again, is there evidence for this assertion, or since revelation is beyond logic, any signs by which we could trust the veracity of the messenger, especially inasmuch as his claims contradict those of the Messiah whose spiritual lineage he claims?

The prophecies claimed for Bahá’u’lláh may not be the best sign to claim. Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov and Alvin Toffler all made predictions that came true, and probably more of them, and I’m not using any of them as my spiritual guides.

I should repeat that I have never had a bad experience with any of the Bahá’ís I have known or befriended. Much like the Mormons and the Sikhs who are my friends, there is much to admire in their personal lives, and their worldview and social viewpoints tend to align closely with mine, even if I can’t give credence to their religious beliefs.

We’ll have to agree to disagree about which of our respective beliefs are “dogma,” and "which are “divine revelation” or simply “inherited beliefs.”

On the other hand, a God that can create and end a universe would not find it difficult to create a giant creature that could contain a man. It’s not a linchpin of my faith either way. I’ll know for sure after I die.

I’d have to say that your description of how the Scriptures were recorded and transmitted by the Jews and the early Christians as simply “oral traditions” is an inaccurate description, based on what we know of the people of their time and the standards of oral transmissions in those cultures.

I would note the problem of using proof-texts from the Bible to support a particular claim of Bahá’u’lláh, while ignoring statements that contradict his other claims is problematic. My understanding (again, limited) is that your religion believes the universe has no beginning and extends into the past infinitely. This clearly conflicts with Genesis (not to mention the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and our current scientific understanding of the origins of the universe). To deny the numerous conflicts between scripture and Bahá’u’lláh’s personal interpretations require some exegetical contortions - one must claim that the Bible is unreliable, and it doesn’t seem reasonable to me that only a 19th century Persian man held the Master Key to realizing what was accurate and what wasn’t.
Mike,
. Again, thank you for your courtesy and the concision of your response. I think (hope) you understand that there is no intention to diminish any of the revelation which has come from the past. The words of Jesus are the words of God. Would that He Himself had written volumes. What relatively little we have is no doubt but a fraction of that which He gave, and we know He was crucified for His words.

. To my thinking, He was seen as a threat to the establishment and the power of the Jewish priests and Pharisees. Note how they, with all their learning, were unable to recognize the Lord of men, while a simple fisherman, Peter, beheld what only a pure soul could see. Whenever a Prophet appears, He is first rejected by the divines, who “have eyes, but see not”.

. So what is this spiritual sight that is required of us to be able to recognize One such as Christ? Why, with all their pomp and pride, were the very keepers of Jewish Law unable to behold their awaited Messiah? There is more than an intellectual criteria involved. As Jesus said, “Ye must be born again.”

. Whether Baha’u’llah is or is not the Promised One of this age is not determined solely through rational proofs, although they can be helpful. Rather, it is ultimately in the heart of the “seeker” whether the Words He has uttered ring true, as the capacity to receive God’s word rests there.

. As to taking literal every story told in the Bible, this would reduce, in my opinion, the capacity and reach of metaphorical truths employed in the telling of spiritual truths. God gave me a rational mind which rejects a literal 6 day creation in the evidence of modern science, and the Jonah story, for example, yet that same mind accepts the profound spiritual message conveyed metaphorically.

. God is the Author of reality, and I don’t think He then toys with it in order to prove Himself. What is consistent in the “progressive revelation” of the Prophets is the elevation of humanity above the animal brute forces and impulses which are inherent in that lower nature.

. "As regards thine assertions about the beginning of creation, this is a matter on which conceptions vary by reason of the divergences in men’s thoughts and opinions. Wert thou to assert that it hath ever existed and shall continue to exist, it would be true; or wert thou to affirm the same concept as is mentioned in the sacred Scriptures, no doubt would there be about it, for it hath been revealed by God, the Lord of the worlds…

That which hath been in existence had existed before, but not in the form thou seest today. The world of existence came into being through the heat generated from the interaction between the active force and that which is its recipient. These two are the same, yet they are different. Thus doth the Great Announcement inform thee about this glorious structure. Such as communicate the generating influence and such as receive its impact are indeed created through the irresistible Word of God which is the Cause of the entire creation, while all else besides His Word are but the creatures and the effects thereof. Verily thy Lord is the Expounder, the All-Wise."

Mike,
. When someone asserts that “Bahá’u’lláh apparently incorporated into his own…”, this misses the point of what Divine Revelation is, in my view. The knowledge of God is inherent in a Manifestation of God and independent of human learning. It is accepted as such, or rejected, according to whether one recognizes Him as a Manifestation of God.

. “The first duty prescribed by God for His servants is the recognition of Him Who is the Day Spring of His Revelation and the Fountain of His laws, Who representeth the Godhead in both the Kingdom of His Cause and the world of creation. Whoso achieveth this duty hath attained unto all good; and whoso is deprived thereof, hath gone astray, though he be the author of every righteous deed. It behoveth every one who reacheth this most sublime station, this summit of transcendent glory, to observe every ordinance of Him Who is the Desire of the world. These twin duties are inseparable. Neither is acceptable without the other. Thus hath it been decreed by Him Who is the Source of Divine inspiration.”

Kitab-i-Aqdas, Most Holy Book reference.bahai.org/en/t/b/GWB/gwb-155.html

. If He is Who He is, whether we are speaking of Jesus or Baha’u’llah, then it follows that He is speaking the truth and revealing what God desires for us to know in whatever day we live. The concept of progressive revelation is that we are instructed gradually, over thousands of years, according to our capacity, not His, even as Jesus said: “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bare it now.”

. For me, there is no contradiction. When I was a child, I was taught basic math. As I grew and learned, principals were introduced which I formerly could not grasp. We now have quantum physics. Newton’s Laws still apply within their own sphere.

. As you mention the prophecies, there is much to them, but the details entail more than can be stated briefly. Some Answered Questions, by Abdul Baha, explains the time prophecies of Daniel and Revelation well, articulating that which was sealed to them that received them. I don’t want to state them here, as it might be inappropriate, but here is a link: reference.bahai.org/en/t/ab/SAQ/

. It is late, my friend. Again, thank you for your kindness and generosity of spirit.
.

Bahaullah cannot be " the promised one of all religions," as Christianity has no “promised one” other than Jesus Christ Himself when He returns.

So in at least one regard, that claim does not work.

I won’t say any more, as I do not care to argue anybody’s beliefs with them.

GEddie,
. God bless you, brother. May Jesus and Mary bless you. Hundreds of thousands of Catholics and as many other denominations, including ministers and a couple of Catholic priests I know personally testify in the affirmative that the 2nd coming has occurred. Have the Jews returned to Israel? Has the Lord set His throne in Elam, which is SW Persia? Have the prophecies of Daniel to which Jesus directed His disciples to refer to been fulfilled? All of them?

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Even as very few initially recognized Jesus 2000 years ago, when He was rejected the Pharisees and Jewish elite, His Faith grew over time. 6 million Baha’is have been gathered into the One Fold of the One Shepherd, growing every day, in these, the early days of this Dispensation.

Deny if you choose. God bless you. But come let us reason together with these followers of your own Faith and the peoples of every land and religion of the world who are the first to stand up and say to their brethren: “He has come! The Lord has come, in this day!”

My wife’s aunt and cousins, 8 and 10 were imprisoned for this and threatened with death. Several of my friends family members have been tortured and killed. Another friend’s sister has served nearly 6 years of a 20 year sentence merely for being a Baha’i in Iran and refusing to recant her Faith in Baha’u’llah. Thousands have fallen by the edge of the sword. Its worth a look into, wouldn’t you say? After so much blood has been spilt at the hands of the fanatic mullahs of Iran. What is going on over there?

Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
God bless all, and Merry Christmas!

GEddie,
. I am in no wise lessening the station of Christ by attempting to understand the truth of the Gospels. To me, it is His teachings that are a guidance unto humanity, and we still need to see that His teachings come from God, as He has come from God to give us those teachings.
It would seem you have an interesting problem on your hands.

This person, that you admit came from God and that you admit also provides teachings that come from God also claimed to* be* God.

With that simple declaration, he either becomes the worst of the worst and we should avoid him at all costs…or he is actually who he says he is.

There is no throne of God in Iran that I am aware of.

And given that the book of Daniel ends with the raising of the dead, no, he is not all fulfilled, either.

I sympathize with the persecution your folks have endured; but persecution per se does not make a message true.

If you are still a mortal man, and not a pneumatikon soma breathing everlasting life – then whatever any priest may tell you, the 2nd coming of our Lord has NOT occurred.

GEddie,
. My thoughts are that our physical eyes perceive physical things, thrones, etc. When our expectations are that there be some throne of gold and all the outward appearances of splendor, then again we fail to perceive the possibilities of what a spiritual Kingdom really is and what that kind of throne, or its symbolism might represent, as “in the hearts of men”.

. Also, the raising of the “spiritually” dead would be my understanding, for to confine all such happenings as within the physical realm of mortality does not make sense to me in the context of: “eyes they have, but see not”, and “Let the dead bury their dead”.

. I think that the majority of those who were quite well established and content with their positions in life, their spiritual comfort zone, as it were, failed to recognize Jesus as the Christ. Those who did had no outward authority. Thus, “The last shall be first”.

I know this is a couple weeks old now, but I’d just like to point out that actually in the Gnostic worldview, God has assumed corporeal form – which is the reason we’re all here in the first place.

The problem is, there’s no such thing as a single ‘gnostic worldview.’ The label ‘gnostic’ covers a range of beliefs and traditions, all of which are connected by the general presumption that the beliefs of the Christian Church aren’t sufficient; rather, one needs a certain knowledge that is ‘hidden’ from non-believers in order to attain to salvation.

gnosis, are you talking about a strain of neo-Gnosticism? If so, then perhaps this is one particular view? More to the point, Gnostics generally believed in the spirit as good and the physical as bad; do your beliefs diverge from this point?

I’d correct that and say “*orthodox *Christian Church”, since Gnostics generally considered themselves just as Christian as anyone else… Valentinians, for example, considered themselves Catholic and worshiped right along side non-Valentinian Christians. But you’re right, ‘Gnostic’ had a variety of expressions. One of the things they had in common though was that we’re all fallen sparks of the Divine, and that Gnosis would wake up that Divine spark so that it could be returned to the Fullness and liberated from the world.
gnosis, are you talking about a strain of neo-Gnosticism? If so, then perhaps this is one particular view? More to the point, Gnostics generally believed in the spirit as good and the physical as bad; do your beliefs diverge from this point?
I was referring to what the ancient Gnostics recorded in their writings, but it applies equally to modern Gnostic Christians as well. When you read Gnostic scripture, it’s not so much that the world is bad, but that it’s imperfect. Just as Catholics believe that the world is imperfect because of the Fall, yet still sanctified by God – so did/do most Gnostics. Gnostic scripture is full of world-affirming teachings, for example in the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus says, “But the kingdom of the Father is spread upon the earth and men do not see it,” and “Cleave a piece of wood, I am there; lift up the stone and you will find me there.”

You missed the point. Without time there is no past, present or future. The point was immediatly after there death they saw Jesus because he had all ready died as well.
Why mess with TIME as it being a reality that the creator created for us to see? What I mean is, whenever time is spoken of in the Bible, no one, including Jesus, ever put a delimiter on it or said something like what you are trying to say; “Without Time”. So if we would continue this line of thought (a pseudo-scientific one) one would be clearly working in the realm in their imagination. Being quite scientific myself, I have come to understand that yes, time is a physical reality. It is strictly pertinent to our physical reality in the universe as we now see it. What is time? Scientifically we know that all matter is in a state of “run-down” and the Laws of thermodynamics validate this. Note, “Scientific Law” is not a theory, this is science. So, according to Science, we all experience decay or Entropy: matter proceeding from highly ordered states (think large molecules and large complicated organizations of mater proceeding to simpler/smaller molecules breaking down to even atoms, our bodies returning to dust, for example. This is really what we preceive as time. My feeling is that time is also a heavenly reality, though when your made of eternal material, one wouldn’t have this life/death relationship with it. “The Law of sin is death (read also ,“entropic death”)” so until sin entered the world nothing decayed or ran down. So until sin is eradicated Heaven will always have reference to it’s effect. Finally, to get back on topic, I can see from the following passage at least a couple of things:
  1. Death and Hades can be thought of as two separate places.
  2. If ones name is written in the book of life they go neither to Death or Hades and they will not be judged either.
  3. The dead and those in Hades will be judged and thrown into the lake of fire. Exception below.
  4. There is a resurrection for those who are beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus. These will reign with Christ for 1000 years on Earth (the first resurrection). This may be a different order of salvation as death had power over them (?).
  5. I will put forth that death had power over the righteous dead until Christ made atonement for sin wherein until such time the righteous dead had to be kept separate from God. This would preclude a long wait for those who died under the old testament.
  6. All these things proceed according to a strict, normal interpretation of time.
  7. There is a TIME for everything under the sun.
The passage I am reading from is Revelation 20. Don’t take my word for it. You better read it for yourself as I only gave it about 2Hrs of time. 😉
