Do You Color Your Hair?

So, I’m a married woman over a certain age. I use “low lights”, which let us say I have a hair colorist put more pepper into my salt and pepper, plus some color variation that I normally don’t have. There is a line of demarcation, so to speak, but it is not so obvious as an all-over color job.

I thought about just leaving my hair its natural color, because to be frank it is a commitment to get your hair colored, and if you don’t keep that commitment it can show in a bad way, but the grey coming in with the brown made my hair look like a house mouse, and not in a nice way, either. Looks OK on the rodent, but I don’t like it so well on myself. OTOH, my mother colored her hair very dark brunette until she died at over 80 years old, which was kind of silly…and wow, white roots on brunette really show big-time. My MIL never colored her hair, but she had the most beautiful white hair you ever saw, the same as her brother and their mother before that, so she hardly counts.

My husband is going grey and he says I ought to do what I think looks nice with mine, because he likes it either way. He’d just rather I don’t cut my hair too short, but besides that he figures I’ll look the best with what I like. If he liked my hair grey, I wouldn’t color it, but as it is I like it with some color added and he just wants me to be happy with it. I don’t do “highlights” because my hair damages so easily, and I was told that lightening hair takes chemicals that are a bit stronger than just adding color. My kids appear to be following in their grandfather’s footsteps, which is to say they have chosen the way to cut their hair, it is pretty much like his was, and they show ever sign of following that choice for the next sixty or eighty years. I suspect they would have to be put under anesthesia if someone wanted to color their hair.

So, what’s your story? What’s your opinion? Male or female, any age, any state of life, do tell…what do you think and what do you do with your own hair? Do you have rules for what your children can do with regards to hair color?

PS I have a prejudice against hair colors not found in nature–and the Jello aisle at the grocery store does not count as “nature”–but I do realize that this is my opinion and not a prohibition to be found in moral law. I do think young people who do this are going to be ridiculed by their own children, but that’s their choice. It won’t be as bad as the flak they’ll get when they’re old for the tatoos and what they’re doing to their earlobes. Our generation was ridiculed for making marriage vows in pastel tuxedos with silly ruffles, not to mention for all of the fashions of the 1970s and 1980s, and as far as I know, no one has literally died of the embarrassment.

Yes, I color mine. Do it myself with a box from the drugstore. It’s called “dark golden blonde”…but on me, it is a very light reddish brown, which looks pretty natural.

I let it go all gray several years ago but …not a good look!! I’m worth the $7.99-$8.99 every 6-7 weeks to splurge, I think 🙂

If it were up to me alone, I’d just let my hair go naturally silver, but my dh and my family want me to remain a black-haired gal, for now.

My dh likes the black hair I had when we married and my family (I’m the oldest living member at 64) don’t want to see me turn into an old woman–I think because they don’t want to admit that they too are getting older. Especially my sister who in her 50’s still dresses and acts like she’s in her 20’s. 😛

So, I go along with it to make them all happy. When my dh retires, and perhaps we move out of state or travel, then I’ll let it go it’s natural shade of silvery gray. 😃

NO!! It always looks fake when you dye it. You should be proud of your gray hairs!!

Actually, mine doesn’t look fake. My niece is a hair dresser who does a professional job. I just visited family I hadn’t seen in quite a while, all women, and they had no idea my hair is dyed. 🙂

Yep, I get highlights every few months. Once it’s really grey, I might stop doing the highlights, but I have these foreign-to-me very thick, almost-black hairs coming in randomly. What’s THAT about??? It’s like one’s hair follicles just go kind of berserk after the age of 45 or so.

Well okay!

Next question, do you wear your glasses or contacts? I proudly wear glasses. (They hide the wrinkles)!🙂

You have lovely hair…and yes, I’m quite aware that no one thinks this is my own real shade. The effect is more like lipstick, that’s absolutely true.

It’s not that I’m ashamed of being grey, either. It’s just that my grey hair doesn’t look very good in the amounts that I currently have. My husband, in contrast, seems to have his mother’s hair, which is attractive alongside his natural hair color in just about any amount. I’m thinking mine will look better when the grey starts winning out, though. We’ll see.

No, she meant mine looks fake. Yours look wonderful. 😉 😃

We have the same hair!! I KNEW I liked you!! (Only I’m sure your highlights look perfectly natural. ;))

…Maybe those are “wisdom hairs”. Wisdom teeth drive you nuts, too, and half the time you wind up just pulling them, so why not? 😃

I’m not quite 30 yet…so grey hair isn’t applicable at this point in time…at least, I haven’t noticed any…😉

I used to get highlights every couple of months. That was when I was single, working and had no other responsibilities and could afford to do that.

No longer. While our budget isn’t super tight…I certainly can’t go running off to the salon ever month or so to spend $100 or more on a new hairstyle.
I don’t really need to color my hair anyway.

Fast forward another 20 years and we’ll see where I am though. My mom goes and gets her hair colored once a month or so. She’s gorgeous…but kinda losing the battle against the grays.

I don’t color my hair and don’t plan to. I have gray-blonde hair, and like everyone else in my family, eventually I will be entirely gray, but the change is very gradual.

I really LOVE my hair color, and that’s what I think should determine whether you color your hair or not. Do what you love and what makes you feel good and confident and healthy. I think feeling good about yourself can help a person live a healthier lifestyle, and that’s a good thing when you are a little older. 🙂

My girls were both dyeing their hair while they were in high school. They were born blonde and remained blonde through childhood and early teen years. Then the coloring started, and at this point, I have no idea what their real hair colors are. I suspect that they are very dark blondes/light browns, like me when I was their age. But they’ve had all different hair colors through the years. My favorite was when my older daughter got the “candy-corn look”–platinum blonde at the roots/crown, red/orange on the hair shaft, and dark brown at the ends!

This same daughter graduated from college, put lavender streaks in her hair, and went to a JOB INTERVIEW! She got the job. But when you work in the entertainment industry, lavender hair is an asset.

Went totally natural about a year ago. I’m 45, and its more silver than salt and pepper. I just couldn’t take the up keep of the coloring, I felt I was in the beauty salon every other week practically to keep up with the roots. And the money being spent doing so was quite a hit to the pocketbook. I’ve gotten tons of compliments in the past year, more than when I was coloring it. My husband loves it.

The only problem was my “new” natural color didn’t always go very well with some of the clothes in my closet that I had bought when I was dying it. And the makeup colors also had to be updated a bit because grey/silver hair does make one’s face a little washed out, more than when one is using a dark hair color.

Other than that, one of the best decisions I ever made. I figured God knew better than I did what color should be on top of my head.

Welllll, I go more blonde in the summer, but my natural color(s) are still present in some form.

Wisdom hairs, huh?? I think in that case, I’d be bald! 😃

😉

My wife is naturally blonde, but she dyes her hair red. I absolutely love red hair, but when she dyes it the color just looks so fake. I wish she would just let it grow in natural at this point but to each their own, I guess.

I am 21 years old and I’ve been dying my hair since I was 14 or 15. It was many colors in high school. Some unnatural but for the past three years its either been my natural color or I put blonde highlights in. I was blonde when I was a baby and I naturally I have dark blonde/light brown hair. The actual shade of blonde that my hair is dyed does not look natural but I think it suits my complexion since I am/was pretty blonde.

Hey! How are you? Glad to see you back!

👋

I’m 24 and I have never dyed my hair. I have ivory skin and black hair. My mother thinks it is beautiful. Growing up I used to want to dye it. I remember telling my mom, “NO ONE has black hair!” lol. I am now getting gray hair. I have been told that graying early is common with dark hair. IF I ever dye it, I will keep it my natural color. It is so dark that it would be really hard to go lighter.
