Do you do this before entering the confessional?

The fellow who was ahead of me in line today scooped a palm full of holy water and poured it on his head before entering the confessional. He was Hispanic, so maybe it is a cultural thing. Do you do this? Have you seen this as well?

Holy Water fonts are a 15-second walk from the Confessionals in my church… so, no 😃

I know. I could see dipping your finger and making the SOTC before entering the confessional.

You would lose your place in line! There is one right next to the confessional in the cathedral I went to.

Only thing I can think of is maybe he just renewed his Baptismal Promises?

No. It is not included in minimal requirement for Confession.

Never seen this, even when I go to Spanish Mass and people are confessing in a confessional before the Mass.

Usually the holy water fonts are near the entrances of the church, not near the confessionals, and people just dip their fingers and bless themselves with the sign of the cross, not dump a handful of water on their head.

It’s fine , as long as he just does it to himself . 😃

Perhaps he was just feeling really nervous and wanted to cool down and be comforted at the same time.
I’ve never seen anyone do that either.

I’ve never seen this but I do see a gentleman coming to church dip his hand in the water and then shake the water out onto the floor then go to confession. I believe it’s probably not right to shake holy water under the floor but who am I to know?

Why wouldn’t it be right? I do it all the time when I bless houses.

Okay. Good to know. See that’s why I ask and conment. I learn! 😁 It just seemed like it was disrespectful to put one’s hand in the water and then throw it all over the floor without blessing oneself with the sign of the cross. But it makes sense that its okay since during Lent the priest blesses the congregation by sprinkling water on them while walking up and down the church.

I mean, I don’t understand why someone would do that either. But it isn’t really wrong, unless their intention is somehow to desecrate the Holy Water or something. Or else they think that the Church isn’t properly blessed, so they’re doing it right or something.

I see him go to confession weekly and pray the rosary while in line so I would think he isn’t meaning to be disrespectful.

@edward_george1 hi father, we have holy water at home ( couple of little bottles from Rome) and we use them for Sign of the cross during prayer . If I have a really bad dream I might wake up and just quickly dab my forehead with that just to re centre myself and remember all is well. Is that ok? I am less than a year into the faith so don’t know all the rules concerning it

Thank you. @edward_george1 Whilst I’m here, I don’t mean to be scrupulous but I was baptised in the Methodist church with holy water when I was a teen . Trinitarian formula but is it proper holy water if it’s not a catholic priest that blessed it ?
