Do you do this before entering the confessional?

I think that holy water fonts are septic (dirty) and I don’t use them. So, NO, I don’t do a superstitious thing like dousing myself with holy water.
The use of holy water is not “superstitious”. It is a blessed sacramental, the use of which is encouraged by the Catechism. See CCC 1668.

Whether it’s necessary to dump a handful on your head rather than just cross yourself with a fingerful is a topic for discussion, and you are also free not to use the holy water in whatever way. However, we don’t call Church-approved sacamentals “superstitious”. It’s disrespectful (At the very least - I actually thought like the previous poster that it bordered on blasphemous also) and shows an ignorance of why we do what we do.

I love seeing the very young children learning to bless themselves with Holy water. It ends up all over their bodies but they are dead serious in what they are doing!
I was taught this at home by my mom, who had a little holy water font in the shape of an angel mounted at child level on the door frame of my room, and she would put holy water obtained from church in it and teach me to bless myself. I was indeed quite serious about it and probably much more careful about getting it “right” than I am as an adult. We can all take lessons from those children!

I’m from a different culture and I’ve never seen anyone do the same.
Perhaps their culture is different! I don’t know.

Nothing against you, but some of the jokes and sarcastic comments here are so… unamusing.

I freely admit mine are lousy. I just pull them out whenever I sense people being overly serious about something when it isn’t warranted, primarily due to a misunderstanding. However, your comment being duly noted, I will think twice in the future. I can see where it would detract from the “productive” nature of the conversation.

I’m thinking there is just as much bacteria on falling rain water these days as there are in holy water vials and no one would go full out OCD if they where caught in the rain. Bless yourself and be reminded of your own Baptism, your not supposed to ingest the stuff anyway. Scooping a cup full and dousing your head just seems a waste and a little inconsiderate but maybe it’s a cultural thing or and individual preference. I would think someone who did that was perhaps less educated on what Holy water is and symbolises but I wouldn’t pay much heed either way.

Don’t take that too seriously.
I do have the same atitude as you in real life, it’s just… I don’t know, some jokes here are so…boring.

I have never seen this, but many people have their own little ceremonies or things that they do.

May we bring glory and praise to God through everything we say and do wherever we are each day. Amen
