I would love to but I am not sure where the forum draws the line between dreams and revelations and I don’t want to cross it.
I’ll take a chance. But consider that I am a convert and not yet confirmed.
I went on a “Retreat for Men” at a religious retreat house a few months ago. The retreat was Friday through Sunday. And the retreat house has a chapel with a tabernacle. I had been on a retreat there before and realized that the chapel was always open at night and nobody will say anything about somebody who wakes up in the night and feels a need to spend some time in Eucharistic Adoration.
Well, I thought about (but wasn’t going to) sleep in the chapel not far from the Holy Presence of the Lord. And why not? I considered how little Samuel had heard the Lord call him (see 1 Samuel chapter 3). And I also considered how Jacob had slept in a place which was God’s abode and dreamt of a ladder with angels going up and down (see Genesis 28:11-17).
Since it was still fall, the retreat house had not yet started their central heat. And because I have a health condition, I awoke in the night and needed another blanket (one extra was nicely folded in each room). About half an hour later, that thin extra blanket was not enough so I got another one from a vacant room. And another half hour later I was still too cold and could not sleep. I remembered from the earlier retreat that there were some very thick blankets next to the fireplace in a meeting room. So I went out to the meeting room and got a nice thick blanket.
The chapel was between the meeting room and my small bedroom. Since it was so convenient I thought I’ll stop in to spend some time with the Lord. This is one of the best things about being Catholic instead of merely being a Protestant. That you can go and spend peaceful and restful time so close to Jesus. And after awhile I got up to leave (or to find a place to rest in the chapel). And I found a nice bench in the chapel just wide enough and just long enough to curl up on and sleep. Why not go for it. So I did.
I had no dream. And I slept in the warm blanket for perhaps only 20 minutes or so at the most. I figured that I had my turn – of sleeping over near Jesus. Somehow I had this idea – look at the picture on the wall over the bench. I’m not sure I knew there was a picture there. And it was too dark to see it. So I took the warm blanket back to my bedroom figuring to look at the picture when it was daylight.
Note that I am a convert. And since the earliest time that I began going to Mass a little more than three years ago I have considered myself to be that lost lamb (1 of 100) that Jesus went to look for. And having been found, Jesus continues to carry and care for. This little lamb is hardly in much shape (environmentally) to care for himself yet. There are too many difficult circumstances that I do not yet know how to unravel.
When I saw the picture the next morning, it was so comforting. The picture was of a very loving and merciful Jesus tenderly holding a little lamb.
No dream. No audible voices. No vision. But definitely an encounter with our loving savior, Jesus Christ.
Joel 3:1 “Then afterward I will pour out my spirit upon all mankind. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions;”
I’m almost 53. I have age spots. My hair is probably grey, but my wife dyes it. I figure I’m allowed to dream dreams. I’m closer to being an old man than being a young man.
Generally, I sleep with a Rosary inside a sock which I wear on my right hand. Whenever I grasp a Rosary in my hand, this is my non-verbal way of asking Mary to be near and to watch over me. Perhaps to hold my hand or to have an angel hold my hand. In this regard, I am a needy child. I am one who feels a need to be held.
I have a son and a daughter. When they were infants, my son really didn’t care about being held. But my daughter wanted to be held a lot. We are all different that way. At the time I was more attached to my daughter because she needed me more.
I hope you are needy like me and that you often tell Mary somehow to be near and watch over you. I hope you are needy like me and often desire to be close to Mary.
Probably I’m talking like this because it is bedtime.
Good night and may God bless you,
