I’m a returning Catholic and looking to start my first fast, but I’m also an avid coffee drinker. I’m just curious if other Catholics are drinking a little coffee when they fast.

You’ll need to say more about how and why you’re fasting.

The Church has only two required fast days: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Information from the USCCB is here: usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-year/lent/catholic-information-on-lenten-fast-and-abstinence.cfm

In part, it says: When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full meal.

Since we’re not close to Ash Wednesday I’m guessing that you’re asking about a personal devotion. In that case, it would be best to work with your spiritual director to determine the rules you will follow.

Fasting applies to actually eating food, not a beverage. You can have the coffee at 10am, but not the donut.

I do. However, no sugar or milk (in other words, no calories).

Peace

Tim

ps - Black coffee actually has one or two calories, but that is so low that I consider it to be negligible.

I’ve often heard this, but never saw any documented evidence for such a claim…could you share it?

I heard someone once say you can’t chew gum…again, I’ve never seen the justification, but perhaps there is one.

Peace and all good!

Documented evidence of what? I promise that I drink coffee during my fasts.😃

I don’t know if drinking liquids is included in an official fast, but I don’t think it is.

Peace

Tim

Oh, sorry, I misread and misspoke…I thought you were saying there was some sort of rule of fasting that prohibited drinking coffee with cream and sugar, not that it was your method…my bad…

Same here. I usually take it with milk and sugar but will drink half a cup without adding anything on fast days.

-Also Tim-

I drank coffee once on a day The Church is obligated to fast. But I felt so guilty about it that I think I cut down even more on portions and/or counted it as a meal to make up for it. LOL. But I don’t think I ever researched if coffee counts or not. I know it does count in a fast before receiving The Eucharist because I have seen it written that only water and medications are allowed.

Yes, I drink coffee on fast days, but no flavored creamers that I normally use. I don’t think the intention of the fast day is to be asleep at your desk and unable to function. 😃

I’m not a big coffee drinker, but I didn’t think liquids count on Ash Wednesday or Good Friday.

Kudos to y’all who can drink it plain. I’m a snobby Starbucks drinker who, when it is all said and done, doesn’t really know how much coffee is actually in the cup. Lol.

I don’t think liquids count either, but then there is the spiritual understanding for fasting which, in addition to the “law” would insist upon self-denial. In my case, that would mean no cream for my coffee…oops…am I in trouble here?? 😊

I’ve never considered whether coffee is allowed during the official fasts. I always went by the notion that if it wasn’t “allowed”, then it is forbidden.

My boss and work colleagues will be pleased to hear that I can continue to have my long blacks. I’m incredibly cranky without my morning coffee. I already take it without milk or sugar so I can’t make it any “harder” to drink.

I don’t like coffee so the answer is no but I love tea, I do not drink tea during my fast as that is very hard for me to go without.

I tend to fasts during certain seasons of the year. Now, I had someone tell me one time to write down the rules of my fast-which I did. One of my fasts, I made a rule that I could only drink two cups of caffeine each day. That was one of the dumbest and hardest things I think I ever did. However, we can be gluttonous about the beverages we are consuming. Plus when I am fasting from certain foods or limiting my food intake, I tend to go overboard with what I drink.
