My plan is do some other form of penance on Fridays. Meat is really no longer a luxury.
This is not the point. The custom of not eating red/bloody meat on fridays is do to the Lord’s Passion. It was said that Mary the mother of the Lord would not eat red/bloody meat after the passion. The custom took off and the believers followed her example but most just observed this pratice on fridays.

Friday is Cheese Pizza night. How easy is that? Not real great for the figure, so I make a “Portabello Pizza” with a large P mushroom some spaghetti sauce and mozzarella… yum

Doesn’t get any easier or better than that (store bought pizza or your own)

At least according to my kids!

Occasionally I will forget and eat meat at a party or something, if it’s in a dip or the like, but I do not prepare any meat foods or order meat foods at restaurants on Fridays. The only exception was when I was pregnant - I needed the protein, and those quirky food aversions made meat the only alternative.

I have not heard, however, that Catholics are required to do this, except during Lent. I started doing it every Friday as an offering to end abortion.

Giving up meat is not that “hard” or “unpleasant”, as I am usually quite happy to eat fish or vegetarian food. But sometimes it’s a sacrifice of convenience, to not always be able to eat meat right whenever I want to, which for some reason is often on Fridays for me - e.g. the folks at work want to go out to lunch to the mid-eastern place that has a great lunch special with 3 kinds of meat, so I either skip out and have a peanut butter sandwich, or go along and settle for the falafel, which is fine but not nearly as good as the kefta kebab. I also seem to find myself in other social situations on Friday that may involve meat consumption. So it’s a sacrifice to not be able to join in.

During ordinary time, I will forgo the abstinence from meat if I have some meat-containing food in the refrigerator that will go bad if I don’t finish it, because I think it’s also a sin to waste food. So in that case I try to come up with something else for the Friday penance.

I eat meat on Friday, but I sacrifice soda instead. I normally don’t eat meat anyway because I prefer other foods, so soda was a bigger sacrifice for me. As far as I understand, I’m supposed to do some kind of penance on Fridays, but it doesn’t have to be meat. On Fridays during Lent I give up meat and soda.

I thought the whole meat on Fridays thing was over with, but I live in Wisconsin and the Friday night fish fry is a fixture here because we have so many Catholics. It is a holdover from when eating fish on Fridays was strictly verboten. But here in Wisconsin, we made it a fun evening. Everybody loves to go out to eat on Friday night for the fish fry, with cole slaw, potato salad, rye bread and sometimes potato pancakes. The schools always serve fish on Friday as well.

We eat meat on Fridays here in NZ…except for Lent! but I do remember one friday when I was at primary school age approx 8, and Mum had given Me meat sandwiches…she had forgotten:( , still the Nun’s were happy to share their lunch with Me 😃 .

I abstain from all meats on every Friday of the year.

During Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent, I stick to bread and water only. I will also pray more and meditate more and increase my time volunteering at Charities.

On the Fridays outside of Lent the U.S. bishops conference obtained the permission of the Holy See for Catholics in the US to substitute a penitential, or even a charitable, practice of their own choosing. They must do some penitential/charitable practice on these Fridays. For most people the easiest practice to consistently fulfill will be the traditional one, to abstain from meat on all Fridays of the year.

I prefer to stick to the traditional method of fasting.

My parents never raised me on this, but recently, I have become very close friends (read in…) with a girl from my church. Due to my relationship with her, as well as the recent death of a friend’s 16-year-old sister, and some serious self-evaluation, I think this something I would like to try. Starting this week, I am going to try to abstain from meat on Fridays, we’ll see what happens.

Just wondering…why is it that we must abstain from meats on Fridays (outside of Lenten Season), if that is what you choose over pentitenital practice, yet we can have cheese, eggs, etc…it seems like they all should not be allowed.

I sometimes eat meat on Friday, but giving it up is no big deal for me since I love most seafood. My wife is Italian and makes a great pasta Milanese.

I obstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. However, growing up we always obstained and I love fish. When I go out I always order Salmon. So I think I should give up diet Pepsi on Fridays. I would be in more pain than if I gave up meat. It is one of those practices that outlives its intent.

Do I have a clone? This could have been my exact answer. Western suburbs of Chicago by any chance?

food at home is almost completely vegetarian so it is not really an issue, except that Friday night is date night, because it is the only night I don’t work, and we usually eat out at a seafood place, so that is what we give up during Lent. (still have the date, we need the time together, just eat at home). As far as fasting, especially during Lent, medical diet I am on is pretty strict as it is and aims at blood sugar control, so I eat more than 3 meals, for me sticking to the diet is discipline enough, and I fast in other ways (suggested by my confessor). Like last year I fasted from shopping, saved the money, gave it to the missions. This year I am fasting from buying books (I buy books the way some people buy gum or soda pop).

As a conservative catholic, my family and I abstain from eating meat on Fridays. The was the rule for hundreds of years, until Pope Paul VI did away with this as well as the 3 hour fast before mass (which is now 1 hour). I figure if these rules were put in place hundreds of years ago by the founding fathers of our church, and I look at society and the Catholics of today who do not know sacrifice any more, and the church has yielded to them, then I will always take the road traveled by men and woman who were better than I.

I’m just wondering…this was a totally new concept to me until friends introduced it about two years ago. I have since learned that the Church still teaches that we should either be abstaining from meat on Friday or offering something else up instead, so that’s what we usually do (though I’m more lenient when I’m preggo). Now, almost all of our friends abstain from meat on Friday. I’m just curious what you all think about this. 😃

Of course not! It is a tradition to make some sacrifice on Friday… this has always been enforced in my family!

God Bless–JMJ
