***I did this morning.:bighanky: I was overwhelmed by the Gospel reading, and then I started thinking about my nephew and his wife (for those who might not know, she cheated on him recently) They should be making their Easter plans, instead, they are not living together right now, and my nephew is so distrought. I am so sad for them. I’m sad for all the sin out there, and the sin that I have allowed myself to commit, even though I know God has forgiven me. I just felt so unworthy, and humbled…it wasn’t a bad thing, to cry, really.

I was just wondering if you ever cry during mass? :(***

No. I’ve felt uplifted and happy though. Not to the point of tears though.

I pray for your nephew and niece-in-law and I pray for you, too. 🙂

Yes, me too. I don’t cry very often during mass, today, was unusual, I just felt overwhelmed…but it wasn’t total sadness, it was more crying out of the gratitude that I have for God’s grace and providence on my life, but also mixed with sadness for my nephew and his wife. It was such a beautiful beautiful mass today, we joined a new parish recently, and I think it just hit home that we made the right choice. Lots of emotions, today. :o

We lost our daughter in 2003 and I still sometimes cry at mass. I just get overwhelmed with saddness and the tears just come. I don’t try to stop it. And I don’t care if anybody is watching. I think church should be a “safe” place to cry and let yourself feel your feelings.:angel1:

***Oh my, I’m so sorry for your loss. 😦

You know, it’s interesting you say that, I didn’t want anyone ‘to see’ me crying…my kids did and they didn’t know what to say. I then was overwhelmed again with the amount of people filling out prayer cards for the burning of prayers, set to take place at the Easter vigil mass.

I will add you to my prayer intentions…again, so sorry for your loss. How difficult that must be for you and your family. :gopray:***

I cry during mass quite often. In fact, sometimes I wonder if there’s something wrong with me. 😊 I can’t identify any specific cause, I am just overwhelmed with the need to cry.

Sometimes it’s very subtle and I can “hide” it from those around me; other times, it’s outright sobbing. I agree, mass ought to be a “safe zone” in which to cry or otherwise react as our souls require.

I’ll be confirmed into the Church next Saturday at the Easter Vigil. 👍 I’m planning to be complete sobbing mess during the entire service. My class is used to my emotions by now, since the three Scrutinies were overwhelming to me.

Aw, my gosh, you will totally be crying all over the place next Saturday indeed!! That is great news, congrats in advance! I think that for me, it was the reading today. It was staring at the crucifix at the altar, it was holding the palms in my hand, and watching my kids hold their up to be blessed, and imagining the people laying down their palms for Jesus. It was overwhelming, beautiful, sad, and humbling. Poor sinners in need of our Savior. God bless you on your journey as a Catholic–I am excited for you!!

I’ve heard several Catholics, lay and clergy, call it “the gift of tears.”

I’ve cried several times after receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. It’s just so overwhelming at times to actually receive HIM.

And I cried at Mass when I made the decision to become Catholic. Again, it’s quite overwhelming.

Alright I’m a guy so this is hard to admit but during mass I don’t break down or anything but I get overwhelmed/choked up/teary eyed during certain points after readings that get to me and during/after Communion I get chills. They are tears of joy though and not sadness. When I go to Stations of the Cross its very emotional for me. I am sometimes so choked up that I can’t sing or say anything. During this Lent I have had some prayer sessions where I get I guess feelings of ecstasy too. I’m not sure if its a spiritual thing or just me reacting to what I’m praying or hearing. Its a great feeling though. When I think of how important Christ is in my life during prayer or mass I get overwhelmed. I’ve had experiences of this at the Adoration Chapel too. Last week I said my rosary in the morning before work and on my drive in I was so overwhelmed with joy I started praising Jesus by repeating His name and had such overwhelming feeling of ecstasy I actually was sobbing while driving in. The feeling of ecstasy is awesome too. All joyful though. Then I got to work 😦 This doesn’t happen all the time but quite frequently. You are the first I’ve told of this.

***What a beautiful rendering of what you experience during prayer and mass…at stations. I almost cried reading it…:o I think that there have been times when I have prayed the Rosary, and have felt this swell of emotion…elation, ‘ecstacy’ as you put it…and I have always interpreted that as the Holy Spirit in and around me…almost like I could feel Jesus’ presence in the room. I know He is here with us always, but do you know what I mean? Really something.

Thanks so much for sharing this. I really think your faith life is quite inspiring.***

I get choked up on occasion. Usually crying is not an option for me as I have duties to perform. This particular reading has done that for me.

I think that perhaps after seeing Passion of the Christ, I now have images in my mind that coincide with today’s Gospel reading…and it made the words on the page more vivid…

That film is what started me on this new journey. I’m an amateur history buff and that film inspired me to study the history of the faith and that is why I am here now. I believe Catholicism is the true Christianity of history.

Thank you Whatevergirl for your kind words…there is a lot I didn’t tell in my story…reading it you may think I’m a lifelong devoted Catholic. I regretfully was not. I have been a closet Catholic all my life. I almost joined the brotherhood 20 years ago but fell in love with a woman and fell into a sinful/mostly Godless life for twenty years and recently in times of trouble last fall I came back into the church and since then I’ve developed a deep prayerful life committed to Jesus. I’ve really changed. I pray constantly, read my bible daily, pray my rosary every day and go to mass any chance I can get. The more I develope my new life these things started happening to me. I am so devote now. I feel this is the Holy Spirit within me doing this. I am even having the feelings of being called again. I’m taking things slowly. To let you know too, I’m a very unemotional guy in life so this is not how I am in the world as far as the emotions. I rarely if ever cry.

George I believe the same things about Catholicism. I feel so lucky now to be raised as a Catholic. I now realize how special the Eucharist is and how special confession is…these are things I’ve taken for granted all my life. I wish I knew what I know now 20 years ago. unfortunately I took my church for granted. Better late than never.

God works in our lives in the most mysterious and beautiful ways, no? So you are thinking of exploring the priesthood again? That is amazing. What a transformation! Don’t keep quiet about this, your story can help others, you know. :o God bless, and thank you for sharing!

Your journey, as you relate it, is very similar to mine. And we’re both swimming the Tiber on the same date. 👍 Thanks be to God 🙂

I don’t think I’m priest material…I was thinking about being a brother. This may not happen though I’m 45 and settled in life but the thought does cross my mind a lot.
