Do you ever cry during Mass?

I did full-blown one time–and I’m a big tough guy. 😃

I’ve also gotten watery eyed other times too 🙂
Good, I don’t feel so weird. Last time I cried was watching the Nativity Story. I know some people think it’s a sappy rendering of the infancy narrative but I was so moved during the last 20 minutes or so that I fought to hold back tears while my wife stared at me like I had grown an extra eye in the middle of my forehead.

I don’t cry, but sometimes I have to force back tears, especially when they sing beautiful hymns
ya the lyrics to a lot of hymns are like kryptonite. you just can’t fight it. it’s like a big wrecking ball and you’re a cream puff, much less made of stone. KA-POW! :crying:

This is a great thread. I absolutely BAWLED in Mass a few weeks ago. We were singing the “Table Prayer” on Pentecost. I was completely overcome with the beauty of the Mass and the fact that I was FINALLY home - exactly where God wanted me to be. It was profound. Mass makes me tear up quite often… Something I rarely, if ever, experiences as a Protestant!

if you like that you should try going on catholic retreats. they can make the biggest macho man fall to his knees. i work on young adult retreats regularly but if i do move on i would like to try and go on some kind of retreat at least once every few months. they really help to keep the fire burning.

Yes, I sometimes cry after Communion after I get back to my pew. And I cried buckets at the procession on the Feast of Corpus Christi. We had a beautiful procession and our organ and choir made it so majestic. The only thing bad was I didn’t have a Kleenex. Not one in my purse, nowhere!

I listen to mass on a channel that has it in my area. ‘For the sack of his sorrowful passion’, always makes me admire with tenderness.

It’s so beautiful man. I’m a very emotional guy. It’s hard to hold things in. You don’t usually see this big football player guy (hs football) crying. I’m actually soft. I’m only hard on the football field. Most of the time it’s happy tears. Happy because God is so beautiful and a-m-a-z-i-n-g! 🙂 🙂 x100
Size & age: mean nothing. I’m 6’1" 270, fit, grandpa. Cry all the time. It is such a complex thing we are witnessing. It usually hits me at the Great Amen. Lifting up the host to heaven. Offering God our sacrifice of his only Son, our Lord. Also, the time we sing Regina Caeli. I translate and contemplate the words as I sing and boom - it hits me.

Blessings from God, my young friend. When you stop having feelings, these tears of Joy, then we all die a little.

Christ be with you and yours!

I once was told by someone wiser than I when this happens you are being filled with the holy spirit. It happens to me most of the time after recieving communion. I always pray after recieving. That is when I feel most vunerable. When things are heavy on my heart that is when I seem to be able to express them the best. I also give thanks for what he has done for us every time I recieve. It also happens to me when our Priest holds up the body and blood and during prayers. It does’nt happen every time, I think that is why I consider it to be so special when it does happen. Do I hold back the tears? Yes, unfortunatly. I have not quite matured past that level of spirtualty. I guess it’s a guy thing. Please ladies take no offense to that. I am 45 yrs. old, a husband of one and father of four and been in the faith for seven years so I still have a lot of growing . hkatzen

i lost it when it really occured to me that Jesus was lifting up the chalice, and i visualized the Last Supper occurring before me. i felt his joy of “eagerly waiting to share this feast”, yet also the sorrow “even unto death” he felt… the wonder and concern of the apostles, even though they could not fully understand what was happening. bunch all that up in a split second and you have some waterworks flowing…

There have been many times during Mass and Adoration that have brought me to tears.

Sometimes during the homily—if I’m going thru a tough time and Father will talk about bearing crosses courageously–it seems as if he’s talking to me, even tho I know he’s speaking in general terms.

Sometimes during consecration–being overwhelmed with the knowledge of what is taking place.

Sometimes during Eucharistic Adoration—just being in His presence and feeling unworthy.

Ditto for me too.

HEY, THAT’S NOT BIBLICAL!

What’s this “Hey that’s not biblical”?
I didn’t look to see what others have writen but if you are like me would will consider the thought that Jesus told us that God’s ways are not our ways, also if all that was written in the bble were presented and that means even what Jesus did in those short few years then it would go around the world x amount of times. If I have a relationship with God isn’t it probable that the relationship would be bassed on how God and I inter connect the best way? And if you the same then wouldn’t it be like wise? God wishes for the best outcome. We could never know the amount of ways God loves us we could not even guess.
The way you cry in mass is the way the spirit touches you ( and praise God, and I how God touches me.

God bless

Dear River Rat who drinks the Living Water,
You only wrote of shorter episodes of your feelings. But you sound much like me. I remember having tears shortly after making my 1st Holy Communion. Throughout my life I hid them, because I didnt know what was happening. I didnt find out that I had the Gift of Tears till just a few years ago. Now I know its nothing to be ashamed of. The Holy Spirit has given you the Gift of Tears also. There is info on this site to learn more.
But I want to talk about you more. You are blessed with the KNOWLEDGE to know what is really happening on tha alter during the consecration. In that little sentence ------ during consecration ----- -being overwelmed with the knowledge of what is taking place!!! To know that the bread and wine is being changed into Jesus Body and Blood. And to watch this exchange, watch the preist’s faces, and to be part of this is remarkable. This is a Gift of the Holy Spirit.
Last of all, you said, being in His presecne and feeling unworthy.
I understand what you mean. Recently I had a dream about Jesus. He came to visit me. He sat down on a chair & I sat on a farther chair. He padded his knee a couple times {meaning come here} I came alittle closer. He padded his knee again, but I was frozen, I couldnt move any closer to HIM. As glorious as was the situation, I felt unworthy in His Presecne.

I have cried during Mass on a few occassions throughout my life and during adoration. But it does not happen all the time. Most times I feel the joy without the tears - sort of a content peaceful feeling because I know that Christ is truely present. When I have cried at mass, there has been a very heavy and intense feeling that comes from deep within my heart. A huge lump in my throut. A few times it happened when I sat in front of the Tabernacle at mass and at the Easter virgil. It’s like I can hear Jesus (not physically) talking in my heart saying " You are my friend. I love you. Thank you for keeping me company." And then I don’t know what to say.

That would be YES YES YES!! Quite often and for many different reasons. I believe tears at such a time as mass to be a gift of the Spirit. I have cried because of brokeness, lonliness, hopefulness, fullness, acceptance, because I am loved by the Lord, because of His pain and suffering, the list goes on an on. I don’t believe that there is any better place to shed tears than at mass. It is not distracting to me, it is very unifying as I share my pain with Him and offer it to our Father together! It is also the best place to shed tears of joy and love. I feel very blessed to experience those moments when our love, His and mine, are united. He is so awesome!!! And don’t be embarrassed, maybe your tears will bring someone else closer to their own feelings for God and just maybe they are not only a blessing to you but a tool of the Lord.
Understand though that shedding tears at mass/church is not something that one decides to do, it is deeply emotional and is brought about by the Holy Spirit. God bless my brothers and sisters. :crying: :tissues: :extrahappy:

What me? I thought I was going to ball like a baby at a first Holy Communion once. The little girls in white, briming with grace. They were so happy. What a special thing to witness. Tim
