Do you ever wear blue jeans to Sunday Mass?

When I get “dressed up” for mass I usually do so for those around me and to make them happy, not Jesus.

Jesus is more concerned about how my soul is dressed.

You’re right, you should not dress for the people around you. That said, don’t you think Christ is pleased when you go the extra mile? God asks him to give to Him from our treasures, not from our surplus. He wants us to show respect to Him. Don’t you think he wants the best from us in every aspect? Saying that God cares more about the inside than the outside is quite similar to saying “I’m good enough. I don’t need to do anything else for God.” You’ve said that when you dress up for Mass you dress up for other people. Don’t you think that God deserves at least the same respect?

How is wearing a different style of frabric going the extra mile? What the world thinks are dress clothes is my surplus. There the dusty things I wear to please the world not God. What I’m saying is I’m more conserned about what my inside is like. No! God deserves more. So I humble myself before Him. Open my soul to him. I give all I can to him.

David danced half naked. Maybe that’s haw we need to present ourselves. I’m sure someone would still complain.

Argh! You obviously have’t read through this who thread. It’s not the fabric that matters. It’s dressing your best for Our Lord, no matter what that is for the individual. If you take the time to dress up for others, why wouldn’t you do it for God? If you make the effort to please the world, why wouldn’t you make the effort to give this gift to God too? You’re right, God deserves more. You should be concerned about your inside as well as your outside and everything in between when it comes to God, right? While the Parable of the Wedding Feast means something else, it also shows how clothes have always been a way to show respect.

I make the effort for others because we allow our pride to get in the way and feel less of someone if they shows up to our wedding in anything less then what we feel is acceptable. If frabric doesn’t matter why is this thread here. The point is we (ME) should spend less time judgeing others about what one wears to mass and more time on God.

We shouldn’t care what the person in front of us is wearing. We should be more concerned about how what we consider important may be damaging our own soul.

By the way when I see someone in church in a suit I tend to think “what a brown noser”.

J.M.J. Help me to not be so rebellious.

The thing is that all these replies that the Lord doesnt mind, and I dont have anything else to wear, or that as long as I go to mass, but I would bet my booties that if these people went to a wedding mass followed by a reception, they would dress up NOT because they are attending mass but because they will be attending a reception and dance afterwards. Then they throw the suit back into the back of the closet and take out the old BJ’s and wornout, stinky, ragged, filthy, tennis for mass the next morning.

Ding, ding, ding!!!
We have a winner.

Spot on!

It’s not about what we consider important. It’s about our Faith. It’s about society as a whole and it certainly isn’t about judging the person in front of us. What do you think the CCC means when it says:
1387 To prepare for worthy reception of this sacrament, the faithful should observe the fast required in their Church.220 Bodily demeanor (gestures, clothing) ought to convey the respect, solemnity, and joy of this moment when Christ becomes our guest
Now if you can grab your clothes for Mass and say “I’m going to wear these because they convey the respect, solemnity and joy Our Lord deserves” more power to you. I don’t believe that societ, as a whole, does this.
By the way when I see someone in church in a suit I tend to think “what a brown noser”.
I think if you read through this thread, you’ll find that you’re more judgmental than most of us or maybe even all of us! 😉

I have a problem with people comparing what I would wear to a wedding to what I would wear to Mass.

I have two outfits that I wear to weddings, unless I am in them. I have a long red dress, with a jacket. And I have a “little black dress,” with a jacket. Both are very dressy. Somehow I don’t think that either one of them would look right at Mass. (Maybe the red one for Christmas.) But the black one is short, like black dresses are. Both are semi-formal evening wear.

So if someone asked me if what I wear to Mass is what I would wear to a wedding, well, no. I would wear semi-formal to formal wear to a wedding. And that is not what anyone I know wears to Mass.

This whole issue about wearing jeans, Sunday best, formal attire, etc seems to suggest people hold one of three opinions about clothing.

  1. *]Dressing up is a sign of respect for those with whom one associates, (including God.)
(This is what I was brought up to believe.)
*]Dressing up is way to manipulate those with whom one associates, (which God could find offensive.)
(This tends to be my husband’s attitude.)
    *]Style of clothing means nothing.

I don’t see how anyone can agree on the value of dressing a certain way for Mass if they can’t agree what it means in general.

You would wear either of those to an afternoon wedding?
How about a baptism?
Would you wear jeans?

I can’t remember the last afternoon wedding that I attended, so I don’t know what I would wear. Most likely, I would wear the red dress.

Of the last three baptisms that I have attended, two of them were during Mass. So I wore whatever I happened to wear to Mass. The last one I attened, I wore a denim jumper. So, I guess I would have to say, Yes, I would wear jeans. Chances are I wore pair of pants or a denim jumper.

I have lots of casual clothes, a couple of really dressy outfits and not much in between. I am a stay at home Mom. In addition, I had knee surgery last year. During my time on crutches, I gained more weight then I care to remember. So, between the two, that doesn’t leave me with much in between.

Could I buy more? Yes. But would it be a waste of money, most likely, since I hope to lose the weight by summer.

The point is that people spend more time/money dressing up for weddings and such than for Our Lord in the Real Presence. We’re not comparing outfit to outfit. As some have said, their best is jeans and that’s what they wear to weddings.

I understand the outgrowing clothes for whatever reason syndrome. One doesn’t need more than one in-between outfit. One can have only one and still be making the extra effort. For example, you went out an bought 2 dresses to make the extra effort to go to weddings, right? You probably don’t wear these often. I’m not trying to dictate what you wear or judging you. I’m just saying that if we’re going to make an extra effort in one area, why not throw one God’s way? It’s all about giving God the best we can in all aspects of our life, if possible. If not possible and there is no little extra money to buy something nicer then that is the case.

I did every now and then but not since I started serving;I thought it not proper. My personal veiw is if you wear nice blue jeans with a polo shirt tucked in or a nice button up shirt would be fine,if accompanied with a belt. But if you wear blue jeans with a t-shirt or something of the sort that is wrong.remember we want to look our best for God!It also depends on what the person can buy,if they dont have enough money to buy slacks and are doing the best they can you cant ask for more than that.So in a way it depends on the person finacial state as well.Just my two cents. 😃

God bless you and Mary keep you! 🙂

I’m not anxious when I dress up for Our Lord. Also, if I can’t dress up because I’m on the fly, I don’t worry about it either. Note it also says “more than” and not isn’t.

Yes, I don’t see a problem with it. The only type of trousers that fit around my size 24-bum/thighs happen to be jeans, and I don’t want to catch a urinary tract infection in Winter by wearing a skirt, so I wear my newest, most presentable jeans with my smart black jacket and my black booties 😃 .

That was a little too graphic:eek:

I don’t get the UTI thing. I’ve lived in SoCal all my life. Unless you have a special medical condition that other women don’t share I’m thinking that there must have been alot of women prior to the 1970’s who had miserable winters because skirts and dresses were all they wore to church back then.

People who wear blue jeans often say “God wouldn’t mind”. How do we know either way?

I don’t think I am worthy enough to speak for God. Do you? I would much rather dress nicely than to look like I don’t care. Not showing God his due reverence is a huge problem these days.

Would you dress in blue jeans to meet the president or Pope? Probably not. Let’s show God the same courtesy.

I have heard it said that God loves us regardless of what we wear to mass. Well, I also believe that m mother loves me even if I don’t get her anything for her birthday, but I know she appreciates it. God will still love us, but I am sure He appreciates our best efforts in all things!

Anna, I don’t get it. How do you get a UTI from wearing a skirt in winter? :o Sorry, guys. I’m curious.
