I know…the question’s not original, but have your kids ever blurted out something kind of funny and embarrassing at the same time and you just wish you had something chewy to stuff in their mouths?

I love stories like the one I’m about to tell.

My niece received her First Holy Communion with about 30 other children. Instead of having a homily, the priest came down from the alter to talk about the importance of Holy Communion with the First Communicants. He asked questions and the children raised their hands to answer. My niece has always been precocious and outspoken. When the Father asked if the children had any questions, my niece raised her hand. We all just held out breath. The priest said, “Do have a question Grace?” “Yes, Father,” she replied respectfully, “Why do I have to wear this dumb, veil?” My brother and his wife rolled their eyes. Everybody in church sort of giggled. The priest explained about the white dress and veil representing purity and innocence etc. He asked her if that answered her question and she nodded her head yes.
The priest went on answering the other children’s questions. He said he would take one last question. Grace raised her hand again and Father said “Yes, Grace?” She asked very sweetly, “Uh… when can I take this itchy veil off?” The parishners roared with laughter, while Father assured her it wouldn’t be too long before she could remove it.

Just to show that he had a good sense of humor, after the mass was over, but before the last hymn was sung, Father made a few announcements then smiled. “Now, let’s all sing the ending hymn so Grace can take her itchy veil off.”:D:blush:

Yeah, sometimes my brother is afraid to go out in public with her, because he never knows what she is going to say.;)😛

What about your kids? Have you ever had a chewy moment with them?

***LOL–That’s a great story. What a funny priest, too…to take it all in stride, aw!

Yes, my dd used to blurt things out…she is nearly 13, so it’s getting better. But, that is what makes family life so great…the unpredictable moments. ;)***

LOL that’s a great story. Cute that the priest referred to her during the closing.

Last week my 3-year old daughter and I were standing in line to check in for an appointment. A very large, tough, intimidating “don’t mess with me” attitude displaying young guy stepped up behind us to wait for his turn. My daughter noticed him, turned and STARED at him for a while (my oh-so-subtle distraction techniques were fruitless). Finally she tugged on my hand and said “Mommy! Mommy!” and pointed at him. I was not looking forward to what she could possibly want to tell me about him, then she said loudly, “Mommy! Good guy.” 🙂 I was sooo relieved. whew

:rotfl: That is so cute.

My little guy isn’t talking yet, so I’ll have to tell a story about my three-year-old nephew. He loves sports and somehow got into the habit of screaming out “PITCH!” at completely random times. Well. . .it sounded a bit like a similar curse word, and people would invariably turn and stare at him. All the attention only made him say the word more often. . .People must really wonder about what goes on in that house. . . 😃

When my now adult son was 2and 1/2, I was taking him with me to my ob checkup. We were taking the elevator instead of the stairs. Just before the doors closed a very large, very large lady got in with us. No problem except her very large dress was made out of the same fabric I had just used to recover our dining room chairs. I saw my ds eyes get very wide and as he opened his mouth I was able to quickly place my hand over it and stifle the words I knew were going to come out (and did later after we got off the elevator) “Mama, she looks just like the chairs!” 🙂

Back in our Protestant days, we went to a church where the pastor gave a childrens’ sermon. He liked to give a couple of the kids the mike and let them ask him questions about the sermon. Well, our daughter, age 3, felt the need to ask this: “My dog Buddy pees and poops in the yard. Why doesn’t he use the potty?” My husband leaned over to me and whispered, " Beam us up, Scotty!" I have never wanted to disappear so badly! We noticed that the microphone thing disappeared after that.

Yep! That’s definitely a chewy moment.😊 I think would have looked for the nearest corner to creep into.😊
