I know…the question’s not original, but have your kids ever blurted out something kind of funny and embarrassing at the same time and you just wish you had something chewy to stuff in their mouths?
I love stories like the one I’m about to tell.
My niece received her First Holy Communion with about 30 other children. Instead of having a homily, the priest came down from the alter to talk about the importance of Holy Communion with the First Communicants. He asked questions and the children raised their hands to answer. My niece has always been precocious and outspoken. When the Father asked if the children had any questions, my niece raised her hand. We all just held out breath. The priest said, “Do have a question Grace?” “Yes, Father,” she replied respectfully, “Why do I have to wear this dumb, veil?” My brother and his wife rolled their eyes. Everybody in church sort of giggled. The priest explained about the white dress and veil representing purity and innocence etc. He asked her if that answered her question and she nodded her head yes.
The priest went on answering the other children’s questions. He said he would take one last question. Grace raised her hand again and Father said “Yes, Grace?” She asked very sweetly, “Uh… when can I take this itchy veil off?” The parishners roared with laughter, while Father assured her it wouldn’t be too long before she could remove it.
Just to show that he had a good sense of humor, after the mass was over, but before the last hymn was sung, Father made a few announcements then smiled. “Now, let’s all sing the ending hymn so Grace can take her itchy veil off.”
Yeah, sometimes my brother is afraid to go out in public with her, because he never knows what she is going to say.

What about your kids? Have you ever had a chewy moment with them?
