I can’t really vote because I don’t fear my own death at all…I haven’t since embracing my Atheism. I fear people I love dying but with my history I suppose thats normal.

I don’t wish for death, but I’m not afraid of dying at all. Talk about people I love dying though and I’m terrified.

For people of all faiths, Do you fear Death, not just the process of dying, but the state of death itself. You may pick multiple options in the poll.

If you don’t mind posting your faith and age as well, I think that might be interesting.

thanks,

As a mother, I fear dying and leaving my children without a mom to care for them. That is my biggest fear about my own death; what about the children?

Not so much death itself - sometimes fear what could happen afterwards!

Not so much. To conquer death, you only have to die. I am curious about the afterlife to be sure.

Yes, I fear death. Not so much life after death, but actually dying. My aunt just died earlier this year, and it appeared that rigormortis practically started setting in a few hours before she died. Then, on the other hand, my great-aunt just died a couple of months ago, and she died a beautiful death where she sat up in bed and reached out her arms toward heaven as if she saw someone, and then she died. God grant me the grace of a peaceful death (that is, if Jesus doesn’t return before then)!

Hello Everyone,

I am 26/Muslim. I am afraid to die right now, but it is not death that I fear, it is Allah that I fear. I am afraid to die and have to face him before I have gotten myself completely right with him and repented for my sins and had enough affliction in this dunya (this life) to remove my major sins so I won’t be punished for them in the hereafter, or in the grave.

I came close to being murdered twice and fought for my life and won. I wasn’t ready to die then, and I didn’t want to go out like that. Yes, in the moment when you see death and it feels imminent, there is fear, but where it used to be I was afraid of dying, now I am afraid of having to face Allah when I’m not done getting myself right with Him.

HI,All
The process of death is scarry, even Jesus in His passion asked if the Father could remove this cup, but he did his Father’s will and accepted death; and by golly he rose from the dead and got a glorified new body.

I fear the process of death yet look forward to an eternity in a place that Jesus has prepared for us, that eye has not seen nor ear has heard, I know this is something to look forward to, that this was His assurance that if we believe in the one true God,[Father, Son and Holy Spirit ] our eternity is assured with him in heaven.

Peace, OneNow1

Almost 15 years ago, I developed a strange condition. My muscles began weakening and I began to lose muscle mass. I was tired all the time and my muscles ached day and night.

After numerous doctor visits and tests, they decided to send me to a neurologist. I had muscle biopsys, EMG’s, I was prodded and poked and still grew weaker by the week.

At first they thought is was a very agressive form of MS. It became difficult to breath. It seemed to effect only my “voluntary muscle system.” The diaphram is a voluntary muscle and it was becoming thinner and weaker. Finally in October my doctor told me to “get your affairs in order and if you want to do anything or go anywhere, like go walk on a beach…do so in the next few weeks…you won’t be here in six months if we can’t figure out how to stop the deterioration.”

I was a person of faith, and I was frightened. During that time, I started falling down quite a bit…i had been using a cane to get around and had to switch to a walker. I had to be very careful when I swallowed as I couldn’t cough with any force…and I hurt all the time…my joints and muscles gave me no relief.

During a period of about two to three weeks…I placed myself into God’s hands…I asked for the grace to die with dignity and poise…while I didn’t understand why this was happening to me I would trust that He was in control…I surrendered to Him and I found peace. Friends picked me up for Meeting on First Day and it was during Worship that I was able to enter into the Presence and…“float” in that “Ocean of Love and Light” Quaker mystics spoke of.

I finally was able to accept whatever came from His Hands and offered up my will to His. While I was making arrangements with hospice, my neurologist called and said he had make arrangements to go to Stanford Muscular Dystropy Clinic for one more battery of tests.

I was there 10 minutes when the specialist reviewed my muscle biopsy and said…“I know what’s wrong with you…you have “polymyositis”.” The only known treatment is large doses of prednisone for extended periods of time. I began a regiment of medication and my prednisone was increased in increments until I was taking 90 miiligrams per day…finally after about a years treatment, I could walk and breathe without difficulty…I could not run and my balance was unsteady as I had lost so much muscle mass…

I am now 52 years old and that was 15 years ago…I still have a few problems but I am doing well…I still am amazed at the Grace of God and I am thankful each and every day for bringing that specialist into my life…I did find peace in the shadow of death…but only through surrender to His Will.

I do not fear death, however I do not currently want to die at this moment. I fear dying a painful death.

Its not death that we should be fearing it is God’s judgement we should be fearing. Death is inevitable. All die. Even Christ had to experience it in His human nature.

I don’t fear death. I trust God to bring us all home in His time. I would like to stay for a while longer because I have young children. However, I also have a child in heaven waiting for us. I have to die to see him again.

I didn’t know Davy Jones had joined the forum. Wait, where’s the 100 years before the mast option??

😃

Sorry, just had to lighten the mood. There was no, I try not to think about it option. I know it will happen some day, and we should all be prepared. But fearing it, or looking forward to it, shouldn’t be something to dwell on.

God Bless!!

I fear the process of death, for instance a long and lingering illness. I would rather die in my sleep or after a very brief illness. Having said that, I do not fear death itself because I know in my heart I will see the face of God.

When I do die, I pray that I do not die in my sleep, because when we are sleeping Allah takes our souls away, so if we die in our sleep it means that He didn’t give it back.

i did not know that about islam. now i am curious but in a respectful way. i hope that you don’t take my questions in a bad way.

what does allah do with your souls while you sleep? would it be worse to die in your sleep then awake?

“It is Allah that takes the souls (of men) at death and those that die not (He takes) during their sleep: those on whom He has passed the decree of death, He keeps back (from returning to life), but the rest He sends (to their bodies) for a term appointed. Verily in this are signs for those who reflect.” (39:42)

A very knowledgeable sister is the one that told me about Allah taking our souls while we are sleeping, and that if you die in your sleep it is not good, because it means that Allah did not give you your soul back. I will try to get a more detailed answer for you on this part of your question, because I’m not 100% certain. The thing about Islam, is that there is so much knowledge to aquire, that even for a practicing Muslim, there is something new to learn every day.

Same here!

I’m 16 and Catholic. No, I don’t fear death. I kinda surprise myself, since I can be a sort of paranoid person at times. But I guess, relying on God’s mercy, I try to be the best person I can so I can go to heaven. After reading the book “Travel Guide to Heaven”, it made me pretty excited to go to Heaven!

I guess I would fear a long, painful death more than death itself.

Ok I received clarification on this matter. It is not bad to die in your sleep, but it does mean that Allah didn’t give you your soul back. I was confused because the sister was telling me that it would be bad to die in your sleep, if you skipped Isha (the last prayer of the day) because you were tired and went to sleep, and if Allah decided not to give you back your soul, you would have to face Him and answer as to why you didn’t pray Isha before you went to sleep…

So she was telling me it would be bad to die in my sleep if I skipped isha because I wanted to go to sleep. Not that it’s bad to die in your sleep. I was mistaken. Like I said, every day is a learning experience.
