Do you feel offended by people who come to the CC dressed as if they were at a barbeque in their backyard?

I’m not particularly offended by what women wear; around here they generally dress pretty decently. But it does rather startle me to see men–older men–arriving in shorts and sandals, rather like they did just come from a backyard barbecue.

BTW to lighten up the mood on this forum have one thing to say,

Yes, it is good advice recent or not. I would not say that I will ignore the part you posted by Colleen Hammond, but it is important to put it in context. Namely, she goes past the teaching of the Catholic Church and into application of that teaching in her book. In this she can not do more than give the opinion of one lay woman. I tell you that a woman in normal dress slacks does nothing for me, or any other man that I know of. These clothes are more asexual in their lustful appeal than dresses.

When it comes to application of truth, time does matter, as does culture. What is prudent in South America may not hold in North America, and none of our norms may apply in the Orient. As a guy, I do not follow fashion, but even I know enough to know that fashion changes from one generation to the next. The key is to apply the same teaching to different situations.

That, and quit judging others because we have different opinions on inconsequential matters.

No, but pants are not by their nature immodest. There are modest pants and immodest pants, There are modest dresses and immodest dresses. The most immodest attire at my own parish is actually what would be defined as dresses and skirts so short that they barely cover the naughty bits.

I think pastors ought to step up and address this trouble during their sermons, with charity.

guess I should add that Mark Shea addressed this a little bit in one of the recent National Catholic Register issues…that got me thinking about a few years ago when I called in to a radio show, I was irritated with what the host was saying about clothes, especially when I had no money to get anything, and was condescendingly told to save my money and buy a skirt…so, since then I’ve revived my sewing and have been trying to make some dresses, but it’s slow going since I am s-l-ow at doing most things.

but then, a couple of years later, someone called into the same radio show and was angry at this same host who wore britches at a seminar or something…

I did like what Mark Shea said about how some Catholics put down others because of what they’re wearing.

I do know that Scarlett O’Hara really dressed up for the barbecue she went to.

Anyway, I just really think the pastor ought to have enough courage to say something about this.

they would like to, believe me. but they cant. do you see what is happening here? the priest would be stoned and said he has no authority.

I have heard from many parishoners who tells me how the priests are sad because they cant admonish parishoners because they are afraid of them.

The Scriptures have nothing to say about pants. Don’t drag out that one verse in Leviticus, because that is a misapplication of a verse. There is a difference between mens and women’s pants. Why can’t you see this?

I wouldn’t wish a Jesuit “education” on anyone. Jesuit schools need reformed from top to bottom until they can figure out how to teach authentic Catholic doctrine and not some made-up lunacy

when visiting the Pope or the Vatican, women are not permitted to wear pants. And they must wear a headcovering.
Why do you think that is?
 
St. John Vianney said “Misfortune to a priest who remains silent when he sees God outraged and souls wandering away!”

I think he also said something about a priest, even if he knows he’ll probably be murdered or something when he steps down from the pulpit, must tell his congregation the truth…(oh dear, I’m sure I don’t have this saying right…)

anyway, we need courageous priests, and to be good and grateful to the priests we have!

I suspect most people would appreciate a little nudge in the right direction if done charitably. Disrespectful dress at Mass has been tolerated for so long that sometimes I wonder if some people just don’t know what they’re supposed to wear…

That’s not at all true. Yet another misconception / falsehood, wisdomseeker. Diplomatic protocol suggest wearing a headcovering and wearing black (except in the case of women with the privilege du blanc), but this is not enforced by the Vatican, and says nothing about pants.

I found this in a July 2009 Catholic New Service article:

The article did say the it’s the U.S. Embassy at the Vatican has a protocol that women wear dresses when visiting the Pope–but it’s not the Vatican’s rule, it’s the Embassy’s rule.
