I don’t mind discussing issues with non-catholics. I only get angry when the guest is not here to dialogue, but to “evangelize.”

BlestOne:
Why would a non Catholic come to a Catholic Answers forum?
  1. Those who are seeking…any questions that they would ask deserve an answer without getting irritated at the person.
  2. Those who really just want to know more about us for themselves, not what they are “told” by others…
  3. Those who are here to reek havoc out of hate or evil.
There are many more reasons for challenging or criticizing our faith, but I find that these are the main ones.
Another bingo.
I also like the sentiment that we shouldn’t be fearful or angry at dissent within the Church, as Jesus promised to protect us, even against the gates of hell.

I get offended when people belittle or make fun of my faith, but not when they challenge or criticize it. I look at true criticism as questioning the truth of a belief, or comparing it so something else and offering reasons.

I LIKE that, that is why I come to forums like these, so we can challenge and learn from one another.

I don’t get offended- when I feel something needs to be said, I say it, and I try to say it in as charitable way as possible (but I don’t sugar-coat things either). If people don’t want to listen- that’s there problem. I have enough problems in the ‘real world’- I pay attention to the posts here, but I don’t get worked up about them.

Since joining the CA Forum, some misconceptions I had concerning Catholicism have been clarified. This is greatly appreciated. However, in the process, I’ve encountered some troubling statements made 1) by Catholics about Catholicism; and, 2) about Martin Luther and Lutheranism. Some of these have not been, to me, so charitable nor accurate nor in the Spirit of Christ.

I think, then, the CA Forum can be a wonderful means of learning and growing in faith, especially if any criticism has this as its purpose. When it is done with an attitude of “you know nothing and have everything to learn from me,” I do not find that helpful. All in all, it has been a good experience for me. I look forward to additional learning, as well as some laughter along the way.

Dear savone,
I wouldn’t get overly scrupulous about the forum rules. You really have to be pretty brazen to get reprimanded here. They seem to tolerate me pretty well, even though I push the envelope at times, and get a thread locked… :o Not everyone gets my irreverent sense of humor… :bounce:  :getholy:

Thanks for pointing this out. However, you won’t mind if I make a copy of your statement, just in case? 😃

I get annoyed when people not only on the boards disrespect my faith, but its mosy annoying when i hear it from people who dont know anything about religions, they just like to disrespect to get a reaction!
I have to agree with Godsent. When people devoutly believe idle gossip and try to argue on that basis, and refuse to believe the truth when presented with it, that riles me.

I had an english teacher in College who, IN CLASS no less, stood up and made an argument that Mormons still practice plural marriage. When I tried to explain to her that this was not true but there is an offshoot of the church calling themselves “Reformed Orthodox Mormons” (that are not really Mormons nor are they recognized by the church it’s-self) that do continue this practice, she argued vehemently that she was correct and nothing would sway her opinion.

These are the people that offend me the most, and once I’ve said my piece to them, I’m through with them.

i keep hearing people say “defense of the faith”. i don’t think the faith, our Holy Catholic Church needs any defending, it has withstood the test of the millenia, dungeons, fire and sword!, etc.
ant it will always,

I was offended when I heard anti-catholic “bashing”, both on the radio & w/in the baptist church I used to attend.

it was this very un-biblical approach that made me study & hunger for the catholic church:D & my perspective of bashing in general can be found in 1 john 4:20,21.
however I have had some moments of roaring laughter @ innocently made( and sometimes silly ) comments made by people who should actually study their bible more often:D

I don’t get offended by challenging remarks, it is the disrespectful ones I don’t like. I won’t argue my faith, but will defend it. When people want to argue or bash my beliefs on a Catholic site, then I ignore them. However sometimes I take more care in what I say and I can sometimes prevent problems.

I am not an apologist and I envy those that are. I really don’t like having to prove things. I accept things and it is hard for me to understand why I have to be able to do this. I know we are called to bring Christ to others and I know I am not good at it. I should be for I have studied enough but I feel tongue tied and not quick enough in real time. The internet helps because I can run for my bible and look for the right passage. However, it is tiring.

I think even the very meanest posters that are saying horrible things to us online are here because God is sending them. You have to wonder why it is that someone would end up on this forum if they didn’t want to learn on some level. We all have to be better at presenting a Catholic Christian view or in the case of non Catholics, a very Christian view.
