i am fearful and yet also discontent because the bible passage that says “i have not come here to judge the world but to give you life, and life in abundance”. … is somewhat of an “assurance” to me in that what I do on a daily basis, however faulty and weak as a human I have without the grace of God, that I am still loved and assured and not judged etc.

sometimes though when you notice things about yoruself like unhealthy attachment just for example, you may start to think the flip side, that you are condemned etc etc.

basically i am sort of starting a protestant vs. catholic once saved always saved debate without actually starting one, i just want to see where Catholicism applies these principles…

we all know how beautiful and powerful and empowering and tear shedding scripture can be because "if god is for us who is against us " etc. yet , if you are on the flip side of that same coin the bible is very very severe even brutal to evil doers, and do we as catholics constant flip between the two side so the coin is what i mean?

how do we stand when we mortal sin? i know we are out of a state of grace but often its a time to get closer to God, are we still free from the condmenation? can condemnation ever extract back? etc.

there is also a verse on having enough oil ready, that the women who didnt have enough oil or fell asleep were not in good shape, etc

Are you saying that all protestants think that once you’re saved, you’re always saved?

What do you mean by “extract back”?

First, we are Catholic; we have Tradition and the Magisterium as well as Scripture. Much of what is only alluded to in Scripture is more fully taught in Tradition, all the way back to the Early Church Fathers.

Secondly, if we are careless and lukewarm, we can easily fall into mortal sin, and this lose our salvation.

The more serious we are about attaining holiness; the more seriously we live our Christian lives–receiving the sacraments, praying (including meditation), fasting, almsgiving, etc., tge less likely we are to fall into mortal sin and lose our salvation.

In short, the Church teaches us how to attain Heaven and warns us how we can fail.

Never forget that God’s love is unchanging; even the soul in mortal sin, though it cannot [presently] receive God’s (sanctifying) grace and love, is loved by God; that is to say, God still desires the good of that soul. It is not God Who changes in relation to us, it is we who change in relation to God.

“When the heart of man is in friendship with God, God shows Himself to him as a God of infinite love and mercy; when the heart is estranged from Him, the sinner sees in the unchangeable God an angry and avenging judge… When an angry man looks in the glass he sees a different reflection from that which he saw when he was cheerful and in good-humour; it is not the glass that has changed, but the man.” (‘The Catechism Explained’)

Although it is true that the soul in mortal sin is an enemy of God in some sense, perhaps more important is the fact that it is God’s love that draws souls from the depths of sin to repentance. This is merciful love in action. Rather than fearing for our salvation, we should place complete confidence in God; He is the Source of our every good desire, including any movement - however small - towards Himself. That ought to inspire confidence in us!

“Most souls are anxious above all to go to Heaven and to escape Hell. I wish My Spouses to be less anxious about going to Heaven than about occupying there the place I have prepared for them: that is to say, to correspond in every way to My desires.”
  • Jesus to Sr. Mary of the Holy Trinity
"… if it were possible for Me to die as many times as there are souls in Hell, I would with most prompt will and most perfect charity give up My Body, and would endure for each soul the same Passion and Death that I endured for all.”
– Jesus to St. Bridget

When we sin (venially or mortally), the best thing to do is to repent as soon as possible. If we ask God for forgiveness, He forgives us. And yes, we may live in a state of repentant mortal sin for a time (until our next confession)…but that is different than living in a state of unrepentant mortal sin.

Say unceasingly the chaplet that I have taught you. Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire that the whole world know My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy. (687)

I desire trust from My creatures. Encourage souls to place great trust in My fathomless mercy. Let the weak, sinful soul have no fear to approach Me, for even if it had more sins than there are grains of sand in the world, all would be drowned in the unmeasurable depths of My mercy. (1059)

Got notified via email because of Techo2000’s post.

You never answered my first post to you, so I don’t really know what you mean.

I’ll just say this: You can lose your salvation at any time - by grieving the Holy Spirit.

This is not easy to do if you’re a christian who loves the Lord. IF you do it, you’ll know.

That’s all I can say, unless you’d care to answer. It might help others too.

God bless you

I think the Sacrament of Confession is the best remedy.

I think the Sacrament of Confession is the best remedy.
You may want to go to confession. You might even need it.
It doesn’t mean you’ve lost your salvation.

We can’t live in fear of becoming lost all the time. Some people worry about this constantly and it can be very detrimental.

Jesus said “I have come to give you life, and a life more abundant”. Life cannot be abundant if we’re worried about losing our salvation at every turn. And where’s the joy of christianity?

If you walk with Jesus and endeavor to do His will, you can be secure in His saving arms.
