Do you guys hate life? or our western world?

honestly, and I dont mean to sound depressing or suicidal because I am far from it, do you guys feel you hate alot of life, in the sense that when shows are on, or sporting events, or regular ordinary things, you cant relate because they arent catholc. for example: say a sporting event comes on there is alot of hype and you like the sport but you somehow know there is a certain element of ungodliness to it all because people at parties are having sex and fornication or people are sort of making the events idolatry in and of themselves?

i love how in european soccer you have players who come onto the field and give the sign of the cross and you know that most of the players that are playing are believers or they come from countries where it matters, whereas here sometimes the shows and things that are on are just so secular its disgusting

i really think that if it wasn’t for the church as being a physical structure , somewhere to go, God would not be worshipped at all, it just is not tangible other than the Church, everyone “believes” but its true belief in Jesus Christ that saves and thats ultimately the faith that is so easily down ridden in today’s time

I find myself detaching more and more from the world and I hope that my “hate” is the “hate” in the bible that speaks of hating the world because I am not of it, i do not want to hate people for no reason thats not my intention at all
 
There are many things going on in this world that make me sad, cynical, dismayed, and angry. Oh, the list is too long even to start, let alone finish. It’s a difficult time we live in, that is true. If I let myself, I’d be sick over it all, and want to quit this world. Sometimes, the evil in this world is overwhelming.

But this is also the world that our Lord created for us. I look around and I can see and feel His Love and His Touch, from the air I breathe, to the trees dotting the landscape, to the music I hear speaking His Words to me, to the wind rushing through my hair, the sun setting on the Plains, the laugh of a baby…and so much more. That is the list, for me, that is the longest, and more important. I continue to look for the good in all people, the good in the joy of nature that He gave us, and all those joys He gives me every day. Don’t completely ‘detach’, as you say. This world is a gift from God, to us. The pain, suffering, disease…those are not.

I invite you to see the joy in His Creations, too. Even the thunder and lightning tonight, along with the rain, are reminding me of His Power and Love.

As for sports players, I see many in the US make similar gestures. However, that doesn’t mean that the media is showing it. 😦 (I believe that the media at large is systematically trying to destroy the Faith, and is doing so in full cooperation or urging at many nations’ leaders.)
 
Well, no, I take a lot of joy in most of life - friends, family, getting out in nature, birds singing, sunshine, snow, etc. But I am sorrowed by the secularization of the West. I wish we were more spiritual as a group.
 
I love life. And I love our western world because it gives us the freedom to make of our lives what we will. I don’t feel the conflict about sports and such because I don’t follow them. It’s not an interest of mine. I feel unbelievably lucky to live in a place that allows freedom of religion, my parish is minutes from my house, I have a job, a home, food, water, there is no famine, no drought and there is peace where I live. There are huge parts of the world not so blessed. I think the sin would be in taking it for granted (which I am sure I do at times) but not just being blessed with it. I think life is what you make of it. Your faith is what you make of it. If you feel abundantly blessed, seek out ways to share your blessings with those not as blessed.
 
OP, I agree with a lot in your post.

The only thing I disagree with is probably the thing I have the most to say about. Basically if you think the only place where God is holy or is worshiped is in the Church, then I think this really speaks a lot about your experience. I mean, for me its possible to go to a restaurant or even a bar with my Catholic friends and to still have a good time, and a spiritually fruitful time. Last night I was in a Waffle House at 1 am, it was filled with drunk and obnoxious people, but my friend and I were too busy having a very deep conversation about Catholic things.
Idk, so I say that to encourage you. Try to make your home a place of prayer, if you haven’t already. I have a nook in my home with a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and some other Sacred objects. And I try to pray Liturgy of the Hours in front of that. So… because I do that, and I know other Catholics out there do that- at least your mindset might change.

That there are other places where Godly things happen, other than within the doors of our parish Church.

Anyways, I agree with you about entertainment. Much of entertainment these days, even sports seems to be billed as “more important” than religion. And can be very sacrilegious. However, I still watch movies with people, I still watch tv shows. Movies can be art forms, you know? I think some movies and tv shows can still be very edifying to God and to man.

I say all this to encourage you. But, I myself totally get where you’re coming from. Sometimes the world seems so so very lost and dark. But, in those times, try to find the light of Jesus by yourself, away from the world. Jesus Christ would leave everyone and go out into the desert to pray. So, I think its important that we do the same periodically- get away from it all, and just spend some time with God.

I rarely read news articles any longer. Most of them are depressing and/or have some political spin to it, so one never really gets the full truth. I usually read the headlines and if something keeps popping up over and over again on Facebook or here, I will read an article or two. I’m already bracing for the presidential election next year. I know my feed on Facebook is going to be filled with my friends who are liberals who will be posting stories about how the conservatives are wrong and vice versa. Not looking forward to it at all.

The internet has given news outlets the ability to report the good and bad immediately. Before, we would have to read it in the newspaper or find out through word of mouth. Now, it is immediately online and I usually find the news of the day in my Facebook feed.

There are a number of things in the world that are depressing, such as ISIS, the racism that is going on today, and the squashing of our liberties. Also, it seems every time I turn around, there is someone in the news who is offended by something new. It is out of control!

I try not to think about the above, even though it is reality. I deal with my day to day life knowing that the country as I knew it years ago, has changed quite a bit.
 
Did I think that I had the leaders “comfortably in my control” back then?

Think of St. Peter who when walking on water took his eyes off Jesus and focused instead on the storm raging around him. What happened? He started sinking.
When the absurdity of the world overwhelms you, stay focused on Jesus via prayer or Adoration. Keep your sight on Jesus and your life centered on him.

May I suggest prayer? All of us, Christians and otherwise needs your prayers.
 
Why would I hate the Western world which has given humanity so much? Like God, it espouses freedom and allows people to choose how they act in this world.

As for life, well I’m here now and I will just have to deal with whatever comes my way to the end. Some days are completely wonderful while others can be difficult, but I know my existence here is only temporary and there is hope because of Christ that things will be better on the other side.
 
I must say that I have been feeling much better about life since I left the western world. Life here is not ideal, far from it, but as an expat I am not troubled by local affairs and am not troubled by the western issues that used to deeply upset me back home. I don’t watch tv and have completely distanced myself from the smut that is pop culture.

I think that modern life, especially in the west that seems to be degenerating every minute, has the potential to be quite toxic and inhumane. Detachment is necessary for those who seek something higher. I also feel the hatred towards it all, and what helps me is prayer. I give it all over to God, the messy politics and social issues and the biased media and people who consume it all.

I don’t think you are alone in feeling this way OP. Just keep praying and you will deal with it all.

I pray for world peace, and that racism and violence will stop. I have been to Adoration. I need to go again.
 
I love life and I love our civilized (at times) Western world. That being said, it does sadden me to see that so many people have lost their faith in God. However, that does not mean that I hate it, if you ever feel a disconnect from God, go outside and look at the beauty God has created! Look at a sunset, look at how the clouds are formed, God is all around us!
I do disagree (if I understood you correctly, if not my apologies) that one can only pray or be near God in church. I pray anywhere, praying helps me refocus my attention on God, I can be with my friends and family and know that the love I feel comes because of God. I find the innocence and purity of children and animals to be a true reflection of God. So while there are more and more lost sheep, pray for them, pray that they return back to God. There is so much evil in the world, but so so much good, pray for the good in the earth to multiply. Pray to your favorite saint to pray for you to get closer to God. Always try to see the good in the world, its there sometimes it is just really hard to see.

If you look at Contra’s information in the upper right, it says he/she lives in Malaysia. I once lived in Bali for a time, and I must say, I felt much better there. The people are fixed on the spiritual, not the material.

The west is also where most of the worlds evil originates, we ‘pollute’ the rest of the world with our greed, lust, materialism, blasphemies, etc.

I truly believe the west is the nation God will destroy when he returns, it has really become a modern day Babylon. Sure there is some good here, probably lots of good people, but that has not shown to be enough to change things.

The West has also contributed many GREAT things to the rest of the world. Yes, I do believe we (as a whole) have more than our share of great evils, but let us not forget the good that the Western World has done, nor sweep under the rug the evil that the non-Western World has done.

As for good people not being enough to change things, I disagree. Every day, good people are working towards a better world, here in the Western World. God will not destroy the good to spite the bad; He has shown that before.

Where i live both locals and foreigners are very focused on making money. I am not idealising Asia in any way but I have so many more freedoms here than I did back in Europe. I understand this is not the case for most locals, so I am only speaking about my personal experience as a foreigner.

For a start, I don’t have to fear being labeled bigot and put my career in question for not endorsing the latest sex craze, and I am free to teach my children the faith and its morality without the government undermining me with their mandatory sex ed in schools. For example.

As long as we pay taxes and don’t mess with Islam we are completely free and nobody cares what we do. I am homeschooling the kids and the responsibility is on my husband and me, and we don’t have to report to anyone. This kind of life suits our family just fine and I am in no rush to go back where my life would be micro managed by some official.
 
I personally have lost a lot of respect for America. Having schizophrenia I feel society just walks all over me while I’m crying out for help.
