do you have to go through the born-again thing to get to Heaven?

Joh 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Joh 3:7 "Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
1Pe 1:23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,
lol, sometimes i cant stand talking to you, other times, I love seeing you post here… It seems I am torn… But I am thankful that you are here and for people like you who are willing to stand up and call people out.

Those people were already practising Jews. They already had a great deal of knowledge about God and their faith so they did not need a long catechumenate. Once Gentiles began converting it became apparent that they were in woeful ignorance of the Truth and needed time to learn the faith. In my case, I had to wait nearly 2 years from my conversion to my Baptism.
So you were like me, but I only waited six months.
I understand what you are talking about although I cannot say that it happened to me in one fell swoop. I had a series of experiences through which God touched me and called me. Although my heart was with God, I had not yet received regeneration because I was not yet Baptised. (perhaps this discussion needs to have all these terms defined. we may be talking past each other because they mean different things to us)
I know I was regenerated six months before I was baptized.
I don’t think you need to have a ‘born-again’ experience to be saved, as it is defined by evangelicals. Some people are raised in the faith and never experience that moment of awakening to God because they have known God from their earliest years. They never have that moment of change from not knowing Him. Does this mean that they are not saved? I don’t think so.
Strictly speaking, us evangelicals say you must be born again to be saved. Most of us do not claim that it must be in one memorable experience. The one memorable experience does not work well for one who has the story of “I can’t remember when I was not saved”.
One must receive the Trinitarian Baptism to be saved whether or not one ever has a ‘born-again’ experience.
Hmm…this does not quite fit my experience where I was saved before being baptized.

Again from everything that I have seen, if you want to dogmatically fit being born-again into one model, you are going to find folks whose experience in encountering Jesus just do not seem to fit in the box you have created for it.

true… but there is a difference between infant baptism… or mere baptism of any kind… .and being born again… filled w/ the Spirit… Being filled w/ the Spirit is NOT emotionalism as one poster seemed to be saying… Was it you??

anyhow… a lot of posters don’t seem to making that distinction…
There is no such doctrinal thing as “filled with the Spirit”. This is the Evangelical infection of the Church.

There is Confirmation.

Agin I ask. Why so much love for Evangelical Protestantism here on CAF?

Thank you for the kind comments…I have spoken tt what I’d call charismatic catholic’s who talk of conversion of the heart…They when through all the regular channels (if I could put it that way) and at a point realized something is missing and have a heart changing experience same as us fundy evangelicals…Somewhere there is an unmet need for a real relation ship is the best I can explain it…Like yur saith Faustina, I believe she had a powerful change of heart…Her leadeship wasn’t sure what to do with her…Her heart call just like mine"Jesus I trust in You"
Because you had this experience do not make the assumption that it is required or common. Take it as a special grace from God, then follow the “rabbit hole” all the way down. “Devour” your bible, then read good commentaries to deapen your understanding. Then read good biblical histories to better understand the times the Bible was written in. Then read good histories on the early Church, and read the writings of the Church fathers.
Iv’e been to charasmatic worship gatherings with preist’s an nuns there…You could see their lives passionate about Christ just like everyone else…I had a catholic neighbor
at the last place I lived…We both put out signs/Flags about Jesus…Christ is Risen , He is alive…I was helping him load a cabinate in his car and he says to me " I know you love Jesus… It’s all about Jesus" I said amen and thanked him…Hey lets face it there are those hot , cold and lukewarm in their faith around us all…Jesus knows who He has a relationship with Him…He will see a lot doing religious things till He returns, but to some He said depart, for I never “knew” them…Grace and peace to you dear saint in Christ…
There is nothing wrong with these spiritual renewal events, so long as a person is careful to avoid some of their… inaccurate (trying to be kind here) theology.
I wasn’t water baptized til a year later after going to a christian festival and hearing
a teaching about it…There were hundreds of us baptized in a farm pond that day…I came out of the gate talking to my co workers about Jesus from day one…I have a girl at work give me a chick tract…I started thinking about my sins and the Holy Spirit took over from there…A week later I got up from that altar call and felt like lead was lifted from my shoulders…I flt so clean inside…I went home and laid in bed and felt like I was washed over and over in rivers of love…I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry…This lasted for hours…Then we come to a year later and my water baptism…I devoured the word after that…About a year s
after my water baptism I was reading about the Holy Spirit and fire and said Lord I want more. This is also where I learned about praying in the Spirit…Man it was like I was running on 12 volts and got hooked to 220…It gave me boldness to talk to others and pass out tracts…That was all close to forty years ago and I still have a burning passion for Jesus…Grace and peace to you…

The only thing that saddens me here is I get the feeling of being looked down here like I’m living on some second class faith and cannot mature into all that Christ desires because I am not a Catholic…It doesn’t bother me because I have experienced so much that the Lord has to offer and am strong and secure in my faith…Grace and peace to y’all…k
dude, what? You were actually converted by a Chick Tract!!! Good lord!!! Those things scare me, and not in a way that leads to God. Read “The Nightmare World of Jack Chick” to get a better understanding of that one… Wow…

I apologize if you feel looked down on, since I know that is not any of these members intention. I know that I am guilty of doing it, but I hope you know that I do not intend to do it. Many of us Catholics simply feel sorrow that people begin their journey to Christ and then stop halfway before they come home to His Church. At least that is how I feel…

Oh stop. St. Thomas Aquinas used the language made popular by Aristotle to flesh out the SUmma Theologica, are you going to avoid using those as well?

It is much easier to use a common tongue to have fruitful dialogue with our separated brethren. We should not adopt their theology, but they will not understand what we are referring to unless we can phrase it in their language (kindof the “there is none so blind as he who will not see” mixed with a but of to each according to his ability)

And Hiskid, Feanor was talking about the inflitration of Evangelical attitudes, not love for the people.

how do you find charismatics? I had a good experience w/ a group of them once…

I know people like this…going as “christian” in their faith and living fare from God…Looked real good on Sunday, lived the rest of the week totally opposite…
when those who have been thro this born again thing fall, they really fall… it seems…

“the last state is worse than the 1st”

but then some who have never been through it… aren’t much better…

maybe that’s why some noncatholics get this notion that “Catholics” think they can go to confession and then afterwards do wahtever they want and then just go to confession again…

I’ve personally never known a Catholic like that… usually those who are into confession… well, they just don’t really do that… but nowadays hardly anyone goes to confession…

anyway… it just goes to show that we need both… We need to let the Holy Spirit in… and we need to also adhere to the Church’s teachings & practices… You wouldn’t think these would be mutually exclusive???:shrug:but some christians act like jumping up an down praising Jesus (mindlessly?) is better than - or a substitute for - knowing & adhering to the doctrines/dogmas of the Original Church… and some Catholics think the opposite…

hmmm… :hmmm::coffeeread::hmmm:

nonCatholics are missing out
also Catholics who don’t understand this experience are missing out…

i am fortunate to be both Catholic & born again… :)a catechized Catholic, i should add… which is the best of the best worlds… Of course it is also a “curse” because i know very few … No, wait, i know NONE who fit into this category with me… which is kinda my fault cuz i’m not very outgoing and don’t try to find those who have this in common w/ me… sometimes I feel very… not so much alone… but … what’s the word? well, misunderstood is a good one for starters…

doesn’t do you any good-unless by born-again they’re meaning an experience of being convicted of sin and turning away from it and back to God. This, however, could at best only be the beginning of ones journey to heaven.
yes, and as long as a person is alive on Earth he will have to accept this journey… he can’t tell himself he has “arrived” becaus that doesn’t happen until death… and he may not arrive in heaven until he’s gone through a long stint in Purgartory… which i’ve heard is a place of excrutiating pain… like Hell except that it comes to an end…

i wouldnt say doesn’t do you any good

because those who go through this experience may or may not be convicted of sin and turning away from it and back to God but once they go through it, this happens automatically…

The term “born again” appears only twice in the New Testament. In John 3:3-5, Jesus tells us how it happens – through water and the Spirit. That means baptism. It may or not be an emotional experience.

The early Christians, who were taught by the Apostles before the New Testament existed, wrote about being “born again” in baptism.

People certainly may have emotional experiences at baptism or at other times in their lives. But we are “born again” only once in baptism, “the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit” Titus 3:5.

In a sense, Catholics are born again in Confession and every time we receive the Eucharist and the other Sacraments.

Peace be with you, Jim Dandy
I’ve been through this and it is not “emotional”… In fact that word demeans the experience…

Cathlics don’t seem to understand those who have been thro this experience… and those who have been thro it but aren’t Catholic don’t u/stand Ctholics…

i understand both cuz i am both…

i have my own criticisms of the Church but i have NO criticism - & never have, even when i was outside the Church - of what is most improtant about the Church, namely its offiical teachings (& of course, the Real Presence).🙂 A lot of A of G people DO criticize certain RCC teachings… like the prohibition on artif b. control … They seem to think tht since they are “saved” ( yet salvation is an ongoing process that always requires our cooperation…) they are free to use artif b. control… They focus on GRACE and faith alone, not on any particular teachings on matters they do not deem important or directly related to salvation… Yet artif b. control IS related to salvation cuz whatever you do to your body and/or heart, you do to your soul… and what you do also affects your spouse/others… God wants the body and soul to be united… not one doing one thing & the other trying to do another…

so it appears there is NEED on the part of both parties… for what the other has…

I know I was regenerated six months before I was baptized.
I’m sorry you feel you have to defend this so much. I suspect the vocabulary is something to blame. I think, in Catholic terms, you could say that you desired Baptism for those six months, since God laid it on your heart. I hope this is accurate.

There is no such doctrinal thing as “filled with the Spirit”. This is the Evangelical infection of the Church.
that’s your opinion. If you haven’t been thro the experience, then maybe that’s why you don’t u/stand it…
Agin I ask. Why so much love for Evangelical Protestantism here on CAF?
i appreciate/value truth. i love Jesus.

I appreciate truth wherever i find it… even when mixed w/ error. i just throw the error out and take the truth…

Catholics violate truth all the time. Just becaus they have ACCESS to the truth (and they do have access, far more so than any other group on the planet) that doesn’t mean they all love truth every day in every way and don’t ever deceive themselves… not freaking hardly… I know some so-called Catholics, 4 exmple, who think that fornication is not a big deal w/ God…One of these guys is no spring chicken… should know better  One even tries to tell me (& the other probably would tell me… but … uh… knows me…) that the Bible doesn’t condemn it!!! Geeze… even if i weren’t Catholic or Christian of any kind, i would not be enthused about fornication… Experience alone tells a person it is WRONG… but then humans have a huge capacity for self-deception… which is why Jesus had to come and go through what He went through… 😦 People seem to have to be hit over the head with a heavy stick b4 they get the picture…

(i speak of myself here… I was clueless until i returned to the Cahtolic Church …)

i agree w/ most of what you say… but i can u/stand a Chick track helping someone find Christ… cuz the ones that aren’t bashing Catholicism speak of accepting Christ, being forgiven and all that… Humans will always be guilty of mixing truth w/ error… human nature… (fallen human nature that is)…

god brings good out of evil…

where can i get that (book?) on the nighmare world of J Chick?

i say it is required…

i have come to this conclusion fairly recently but i am convinced… totally… seen too much/been through too much… not to believe… (know)

Again, there is nothing in Catholicism that states a “Born again” experience is required, otherwise how could a person have the faith from birth through death?

I agree, in a sense, that it is required for those who have been out of the faith or non-Christian in general, but I can attest to the fact that I never had a specific moment where I was suddenly a believer. For me Christ grew like a fungus, slowly and in the dark places in my soul, gradually filling me until I can know/believe nothing else.

i could say the same thing, even tho i am born again… (long story…)

In baptism a person is born again, but not in the same way as someone who is baptized in the Holy Spirit…

and there IS something in Catholicism that speaks of being born again… Scripture…

Yes, scripture speaks of being born again into the Holy Spirit. This does not mean that a “born again” experience is required. Take it as a gift from God, as I told Hiskid a while ago, and thank God for giving you the grace to suddenly and completely see Him as well as a human is able. But do not take it as required.

The Scriptures also talk about taking off the old man and putting on the new. That does not mean that when we become born again we should completely do away with the trappings of our old life: house, car, family, etc. It means that we should put away the sin of our past lives. This can be either completely and thoroughly as may be expressed after a born again experience or slowly and methodically as I am currently working through.
