Do you have to say the Mysteries of the Rosary that are recommended for the day?

Like say If today was for example the sorrowful Mysteries can I say the Luminous Mysteries instead ?

Can someone just choose to say only the sorrowful mysteries forever when they say the Rosary?
 
Can they? Sure. These prayer are outside the liturgy and not regulated. They are a private devotion. I have switched them around on occasion to match my situation.
 
As a general rule of thumb, I follow the standard weekly cycle, but on major feasts or during certain liturgical seasons, I will use the mysteries that best reflect that day / season.
For example, let’s say Christmas fell on a Friday. I personally think it rather odd to pray the Sorrowful Mysteries on the most joyful feast of Christmas! I’ll always pray the Joyful Mysteries on Christmas. On the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, I’ll always pray the Luminous Mysteries. On the feast of the Annunciation, the Joyful…on the Exaltation of the Cross, the Sorrowful…on Our Lady of Sorrows, the Sorrowful, etc. etc.
During all of Lent I pray the Sorrowful, and for the entire Easter season I pray the Glorious.

I pray the Franciscan Crown Rosary…same 7 mysteries every day.
 
The mysteries are suggested, as the sorrowful mysteries occur on Friday, in which our Lord suffered and died. The glorious on Sunday, in which He rose, etc. But you can do any set of mysteries any day of the week. It is all about contemplating the life of Christ, not about the calendar or a schedule.

Being a court officer in a prior life, I prefer to “modify” the Sorrowful mysteries, grouping the scourging and crowning with thorns together as the third mystery, so that I may contemplate our Lord’s trial before Pilate as the second sorrowful mystery. That’s just me.

It’s a personal devotion…your call!

You can even make up your own, from biblical events, or your own or families life.

Celebrate your family, or events that made you who you are today! Don’t skip over the dailies, they are sound keystones of our faith…but throwing in a personal set every now and then isn’t a bad idea!

You can choose what you want. I note that which Mysteries are “recommended” for the day differs anyway depending on whether you are using the regular daily rotation, or a Novena rotation. For example, if you do the traditional 54-day Rosary Novena, it uses only 3 sets of mysteries (no Luminous) and the assignment for the novena day is often out of sync with the traditional mysteries for the weekday. I just pick whichever mysteries I want to say or think fits best with the daily meditation (example: if the Novena meditation is on “Joy” then I probably pick Joyful Mysteries) and do not pay attention to the assignments. It’s all good.
 
I do my best to do whatever the weekly cycle calls for, but I always forget the Lenten/Advent changes.
 
I pray it without Mysteries most of the time. So, essentially it’s five repetitions of Our Father with the decades and the Oh My Jesus after the introductory prayers. Then the Hail Holy Queen.

Sometimes I change it up and pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy or the Byzantine Rosary (my beads are a wooden Greek Catholic Rosary with an icon instead of the Crucifix) or the Jesus Prayer in English or Arabic depending on the circumstances.

Our Lady hears you no matter what. 🙂
 
i’d like to think it doesn’t matter what mystery you say a rosary on which day

logically; you could say the joyful, then the luminous, then the sorrowful, followed & concluded by the glorious on successive days
