Then you are not Catholic?

Even Protestants believe what Jesus said about hell. It’s in the Bible!

Jesus spoke of hell . the Bible in many passages speaks of hell. Lazarus said warn my family so no one else will have to come here. Go with what Scriptures teach and if the church teaches different , change what the church has been wrongly teaching. Hell is eternal as well as Heaven. The Church has never said a particular person or particular group of people, by name, are in hell.
An atheist may simply be ignorant, which in itself is no mortal sin. For a person to be guilty of a mortal sin, they have to be well conscious of their wrongdoing. We should leave such judging up to God.

I agree with you. I just don’t understand why the OP has brought up a particular sin to discuss referencing atheists when they will go to Hell anyway if they die atheists.

Yes indeed, I do believe in hell.
If I didn’t believe the Church’s teachings on hell, then I would be lying when I said the first part of the Act of Contrition during the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which I believe would render my confession invalid. Considering that at that moment, the Priest is acting In Persona Christi, this would mean that you are lying right to Jesus’s face when you say:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven%between% and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life.

I am aware that sometimes there are other forms of the Act of Contrition which may vary somewhat and perhaps not include the dread losing heaven and pains of hell part. I just found this to be a most pertinent reason to be in accord with the Magesterium beyond what has already been stated on this thread.

Well, original sin, for one. The fact that we are all punished for something ancestral that we at no time had a choice in.

Are you thinking of original sin kind of like getting a spanking or being sent to prison for something your parents did? Isn’t it more like inheriting a trait from your parents–like a gene that leaves you more susceptible to a disease? Isn’t it that they did something that changed their nature and we inherit that nature? Not sure I call it punishment not at least the in the sense that I typically think of punishment.

Death as a punishment for original sin. This makes all other punishments seem like a gentle twist on the ear!

The fact that both were removed for Mary, just because she was Mary, leaving everybody else to suffer on.

Didn’t Mary still have free will --just as Adam and Eve did? Could she have chosen to sin just as they did? Do you think she did not suffer in this life? Does the Church teach that she didn’t die–or simply that she was assumed? Isn’t the question of whether or not she died before her assumption open?

I could go on…

Please, no lengthy rebuttals based on Thomas Aquinas or otherwise. I accept all those teachings, though they seem contorted, to an extent, to me.

My only point was that compared to stuff like that, Hell just makes sense. It’s not the only severity in the Godly economy. And those who land in it do so as a result of their choices.

No one has ever returned from heaven or hell ( Except God)

Based on your first sentence, I like the way you think. I like that you think God only has a heaven for his people.

Maybe I wasn’t clear enough on the way I think. Define “God’s people”. Personally, I believe heaven is fit for any good person, no matter their religion, if you imply that “God’s people” are just Christians. If you are implying that “God’s people” is everyone with a good soul, then I agree.

To recall, I think that if you did not make it into heaven, you are at the literal point of death, when both your body and soul are inexistent.

However, I believe that anyone can make it into heaven (not that everyone will, of course). I do not think that anyone is faced with more disadvantages than another when it comes to getting into heaven. As long as they are a good person who treats everyone with dignity and respect and tries their best to understand and love others no matter what, I literally could not imagine God telling these people that they cannot make it to heaven.

Excuse me thistle, just because I do not believe in eternal fire does not make me an atheist. I am a god-loving girl and he has protected me my whole life. Reread my first post again and you might understand what it is that I believe.

I believe in heaven, but I don’t believe in hell. That’s just my honest belief about the matter. Of course not everyone can get into heaven, but I think those who don’t just die. They don’t go to hell, they don’t go anywhere. They literally just stop existing.

Wouldn’t a punishment for being a mortal sinner be much worse if you ended up completely dead and alone versus being with other sinners in hell? What do you guys think?

In Hell souls are hopelessly alone. Hell exists. To be Catholic you must believe in the existence of Hell. God bless you.

I re-read your first post and this was your opening comment.

Catholics MUST believe believe in Hell. It is an infallible teaching of the Church.
I pointed out that Catholics who reject an infallible teaching of the Church commit heresy.

Though there is a “Paradise” in Michigan, as well.

By the way, the reason why Paul called it the “Third Heaven” is this - first heaven = sky; second heaven = abode of the celestial bodies (outer space); third heaven = abode of God. In many languages (such as Spanish), all three are called by the same word (el cielo).

How many ‘Hells’ can you think of that exist on earth? Many!! Many places of terror and turmoil. God created Earth so why not create Heaven and Hell on earth?

Why has Heaven or Hell have to be somewhere other than earth? Where does it say in the Bible where ‘Hell’ ‘actually’ is?
