Do you honestly believe in hell?

This web-site is making me want to leave the Catholic Church & become Protestant.

The Church has never said a particular person or particular group of people, by name, are in hell.
An atheist may simply be ignorant, which in itself is no mortal sin. For a person to be guilty of a mortal sin, they have to be well conscious of their wrongdoing. We should leave such judging up to God.
So you’re saying that a person that lives their life rejecting God and not following his teaching could potentially go to Heaven. But a Christian that follows God’s commands, but commits mortal sins without confessing (because they’re not Catholic), they would go to Hell.

Yes I do. Even more, I believe people might actually go there. I think people tend to forget when discussing hell that it is a choice. Those in hell are there because they CHOSE to reject God.

I’m asking with all sincerity because I don’t know.
And I do believe in Hell.

It doesn’t make sense to me that a person that truly believes in God and lives to obey his commands, but for whatever reason commits a particular sin they don’t know/believe is mortal sin would go to Hell. I’d assume they repent of sin in general, but if not for that particular sin, they’d still go to Hell?

I believe in heaven, but I don’t believe in hell. That’s just my honest belief about the matter. Of course not everyone can get into heaven, but I think those who don’t just die. They don’t go to hell, they don’t go anywhere. They literally just stop existing.

Wouldn’t a punishment for being a mortal sinner be much worse if you ended up completely dead and alone versus being with other sinners in hell? What do you guys think?
Part of me thinks people really just die. The idea of heaven and hell is sad to me. Some families will be permanently separated for eternity. Sure there are near-death experiences that reconfirm people’s prior religious beliefs. We have little to no proof there is any form of afterlife other than faith. Perhaps the idea of an afterlife imagined from near-death experiences.

Hello,

I see what you are saying. This is a topic I struggled/still with for some time: I give full assent to Church teachings, including Hell. You must read what the Church says about this.
You’ll see that it is reasonable, and Catholics are obliged to give assent. If it’s too tough, ask God for strength and faith.

In a book that St. Alphonsus Maria wrote (in The Practice of the Love of Jesus Christ), he said that people are blaming God for sinners going to hell. He then states that this is an ingratitude, that God made us in his Mercy to be with him in heaven. Now this is coming from St. Alphonsus, whose confessor said he never committed mortal sin.

God provides the grace necessary for all to be saved, remember that. And that the Church states that if anyone is in Hell, they are there because of their own fault, not because of God.

I highly recommend:

-The writings of St. Faustina on the Divine Mercy
-The Catechism of the Catholic Church on Hell

This doesn’t take too much time to look through

God bless and keep you, remember that He care for us more than we care for ourselves.

Is this a Catholic website
I’m starting to wonder. I don’t see why people find hell so hard. To me it makes logical sense. A merciful God gives righteous judgment. I don’t want to ever say someone deserves to go to hell (because to be honest with you, much of the time I think that about myself), but I find universalism to be antagonistic to Christ’s once and for all sacrifice on the cross.

Who cares what we think…read Matt. 25: 41-45. Jesus says there is hell with eternal FIRE!

I think they should read my favourite book of the Bible…the Book of Revelation, and then, sincerely, if they still call themselves Christians and say they believe what the Bible says, tell me there’s no hell.

The guys who walk into a school or shopping center & kill a bunch of innocent people are deserving of more than a slap on the wrist!

Well, therein lies the problem. I don’t know what they repented of or if they did at the last minute, I don’t know what their mental state is, and I don’t know what their culpability level is. It’s not up to me to judge their soul. Their actions would definitely be wrong, and the Bible does speak of groups that will not inherit the kingdom of God, but again, I’m not them. I leave that judgment up to Our Lord. Still, no matter my opinion, it does not rule out that the Bible says there IS a Hell.

We all deserve Hell. All of us. It is the price for sin. Catholics who forget this are far more antagonistic towards Christ’s sacrifice, than anything else, since they are the ones who lend credence towards universalism.

If they are not Catholic, through no fault of their own, they can pray and repent of their sins, and with the help of the grace of God have a firm purpose to not commit them again.
