Do You Know What Note She Is Singing?

I really like Josh Groban. I really can’t stand this song no matter who sings it. It is on my list of draggy, boring songs I never want to hear again. Ever.
You made me chuckle. You really don’t like the song, @Irishmom2! I like it, and I agree, @pianistclare, the recording is spectacular!

I like Josh Groban, but he’s not my favorite male singer. This man has always been my favorite singer, and I think the song is appropriate since Sunday is Easter:

This was at one of Johnny Mathis’ Royal Albert Hall concerts in 1979. He likes to sing this song with only a harp accompaniment. The harpist is Thelma Owen. John liked her playing so much that he often flew her to whatever concert he was singing, and Thelma was happy to oblige. Though he was raised in the Methodist Church, and the Mathis family was very religious, John converted to Roman Catholicism decades ago. He used to include this song, written by Duke Ellington, in every concert because he is still very religious and thinks it important we not forget God in our daily lives.

Many people like Johnny Mathis (he is the third largest selling recording artist of the 20th century, with only the Beatles and Elvis ahead), but whether one likes him or not, his intonation is always perfect, his breath control spectacular, and his phrasing impeccable. He studied voice for six or seven years with an opera singer, Connie Cox, and he was almost lured into opera himself. And, along with Barry Manilow and Frank Sinatra, John is the only singer to have an album on Billboard’s “Hot 100” every decade of his career, so he’s resonating with a lot of people. His 1958 album, Johnny’s Greatest Hits was on Billboard’s “Hot 100” for 491 consecutive weeks (9 1/2 years!), making it into the Guinness Book of World Records, a record that held until the 1980s and was broken by Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. And if you’ve read all this, you probably now know more about Johnny Mathis than you ever wanted to! 😄

I LOVE Johnny Mathis! Yes, perfection! And I saw an interview with him recently, he seems like such a nice man. So grateful for his parents nurturing of his talent. And he can still sing! ❤️

He IS a wonderful man @Irishmom2. And he’s my neighbor! He’s very humble and down-to-earth. Very sweet and empathetic. He always says his father was his best pal, and he loved his mother dearly. The whole Mathis family is wonderful, but John is the best of the bunch. He always attributes his beautiful voice and success to God and says they are gifts from God. And yes! He is still giving concerts!

Well, it’s an Irish classic. Like for centuries. It’s in your blood, girl! It’s about a lover who passed away. 🤩

Another very good version is Sinead OConnor’s live version. She’s straight up bat doo doo crazy, but she can sing traditional Irish music very well.

Thank you, @pianistclare. I’ll look for it on YouTube. No one sings those beautiful melancholy songs like the Irish! Or writes like them, either. I remember being totally blown away by Angela’s Ashes. It takes a lot to make me say, “Oh, wow!” about a book, but I felt that way after reading that one.

I love him and his music, too, and my husband does, too. ❤️

He is one of my favorite male vocalists. Him, as well as Nat King Cole. I really enjoy listening to male voices that I think are distinctive in some way–that are really beautiful.

My Mom was a huge fan of Johnny’s music, and would play it while I was growing up. In fact, both my parents enjoyed his music. 🙂

He has been my neighbor all my life. Well, I went away to school, then to Europe for a while, but now, we are neighbors again. John’s house is behind the cypresses, mine is higher up and to the right. This photo was taken the month before John’s house burned, but it is almost rebuilt now. You can see why we don’t have extensive gardens.

Nat Cole is John’s favorite!

Well that figures!

Anyone here listened to Josh Groban’s version of “She Moved Through the Fair?”

I’m not crazy about him but this recording is spectacular!
Thanks for posting Clare! I have never heard the song before. I had even forgotten about Josh Groban. Whatever happened to him?
I did enjoy this recording.

I don’t know, I’m not a follower of his…I guess he’s still perfeoming, I don/t know.

I don’t really follow him, either, but I know he’s performing and recording.

@Irishmom2, I don’t like "You Raise Me Up’ much, another Josh Groban song. That one seems too slow and draggy to me. I know what you mean. I like Groban’s voice, though, but not as much as John’s.

Well, duh, yeah! I like Josh Groban, but I don’t like every song he does. Especially when the song was done by someone else first.

Like this:

That’s true he mostly covers things. He’s not a composer. My thing is don’t like watching him, but listening is fine LOL. You Raise Me UP is sooooooo overdone. They played it to death. When people request it for weddings I just cringe. Luckily we don’t do allow radio songs at weddings.

I never cared for songs like You Raise Me Up. Or On Eagle’s Wings.

HAHAHAHHA! Music Directors call Eagles Wing the “yoohoo song”

You Who dwell in the shelter of the Lord…
🤣
