Well, it isn’t just Valentine’s Day, but mother’s day, my birthday and anniversaries too. All for the same reason: DH waits till the day of (sometimes on the way home from work on the evening of that day or on a cigarette errand) to pick up a card for the occasion and that’s it. He doesn’t put much if any thought into it, much less presenting any kind of gift.

I have actually posted an ongoing ‘good any time’ wish list for him in case he needs ideas, and I’ve mentioned to him that I have a wish list on Amazon, but he’s never given either of these any notice. He doesn’t even bother to either a) take me shopping to get what I want or b) give me the money (and time away from the house w/out the little ones) to go get something for myself. He doesn’t even plan to go out to dinner!!! If I ask him, he acts like ‘do I hafta?’ As if to say, isn’t the last-minute card enough? Jeez you’re so hard to please!

I love doing things for him and I will plan at least a month in advance, I’ll save up my spending money and buy him a gift. I will likely teach our children as they get older to put time and thought into doing something for daddy, but I will be very disappointed if he doesn’t teach them to do the same for me - he takes after his father in this I think.

😃
I haven’t really DONE anything just yet…But I plan to. Let’s just say I plan to look “Spiffy”…Too vague?..well, as reluctant as I am to reveal my secret evil schemes to everyone…I may as well…(After all, I don’t believe SHE will be reading this) I got a couple of suits (My first ever) and I plan to show up to Mass on the 15th wearing one. Of course, it’ll be surprising to her, since I didn’t tell her. My goal is to make her go weak at the knees…yep, she did that to me once when she got her hair cut to shoulder-length…Its payback time…heheh
The timing was hard to pull off, since there are other factors I won’t get into here on the forum…Those are the more…evil…parts…lol…OK, not evil, but kinda funny
I’m sure you will make her weak in her knees. Just make sure she can still pay attention during Mass:D

That’s RIGHT! I’ve got to be careful about that! Thanks for the tip!

hehehehe…that day is going to be EPIC:thumbsup:

It is something that was made up by greeting card and flower companies. Silliness.
LOL–You forgot to add jewelry companies, too. 😉 😛

Agreed. It’s hilarious, that the stores start wheeling out the red candy, cards, hearts, etc…literally on Jan 2nd now. It’s like…sheesh. My husband and I have exchanged gifts…surprises…go out for a nice dinner. But, we do nice things for each other, aside from Valentine’s day. I don’t need a day to make me feel more loving…or loved…

It is nice to have an excuse to nibble on some Godivas though…😃

Did you ever notice that the only time you hear it referred to in MSM as St. Valentines Day is when referring to the St. Valentines Day massacre?

I like it, but our anniversary ir 10 days earlier so we only use it as an excuse to refill the candy supplies, usually done just after the 14th.

You have to understand, there is the Julian Calendar, the Gregorian Calendar and the Chocolatian Calendar.
Christmas – Valentines Day – Easter – Mothers Day – Fathers Day – July 4th — August 13th (Hershey’s Birth [observed]) — September 13th (Hershey’s Birth [actual] – Halloween — Thanksgiving — Christmas.
  • Remember, there are two kinds of people in the world. Those who love chocolate, and communists.
  • Research indicates that 14 out of every 10 people love chocolate.
:rotfl:

Eh, I’m single now and have been for almost 30 years. When I was married, I almost feared getting flowers. My ex would get sullen and pout then scream at me for a week if I was insufficiently enthusiastic.

I almost envy my daughter and her husband who enjoy being with each other - they don’t have to walk on eggshells. So I wish them and all other couples a very happy valentine’s day. I’ll go out and eat some chocolate.

I would say that I am neutral. This year, we made color bowls in a horticulture class so the teacher (me) made an extra example to take home with a red center surrounded by pink and white flowers and Irish moss. It will make a good Valentine’s day gift.

We are still not 100% official even though we do stuff together every day. Maybe this will be a good time to have the talk that moves things forward 🙂 .

But over all, I would say that it is an over commercialized day that is kind of pointless. Growing up with a group of Catholic homeschoolers, we always called it St. Valentine’s day. That is what I plan on it being to my kids.

I do remember with fondness the innocent schoolyard Valentine-giving. A friend sent me one such today. It doesn’t have to just be a squishy ‘romance’ thing!

But it should of course include chocolate. 😉

Heh, I remember when my 3rd grade class had secret valentines.
I remember actually being the secret valentine of the girl I had a crush on. I gave her a little stuffed animal, a puppy if I remember correctly.
After Valentine’s day, we were asked to stand when the name of person we were “assigned” to was called, so that they would know who their valentine was. When I stood, the girl looked at me and said “I love you!”
Needless to say that made me blush quite a lot.

And now, 11 or so years later…I am left bitter and cynical.

Just kidding…

you sound like one of my boyfriends I had in high school. He actually told me a couple of years ago, that it was my fault that he had kids with three different women and has been married twice!! Why, you ask!! Because I broke up with him when I was in 10th grade!! Everyone knows that when you break up with a guy that treats you like garbage, they always go out and get a girl pregnant…4 years later;) I told him that the time limit was up for blaming me for his life, as mine was up for blaming him for making me think that all guys hit girls:o that was the end of that debate:D

Hey–

Wow, that sounds weird…lol
That guy must have had complex issues…

Anyways, I was in no way, shape, or form BLAMING that young lady for me being cynical. LOL
I was just pointing out that I used to enjoy Valentine’s day a lot more!!
Now, I don’t like it…or rather, I COULD like it if things went the right way.
Which they might THIS time… 😉

I know you weren’t!! You are too nice to do that!! When you find your special someone, I know you will treat her like a princess!!

You had better let us know how things go at Church this weekend!!!

That’s just it! I think I’m there!!

I really appreciate you thinking so! I will try my best to treat her like a priceless treasure! I know I can be a pain sometimes, so I hope I can overcome that for her, so that she’ll never be treated with disrespect, especially at home.

And yes, I’ll let you know!
Here’s hoping! 😃
And praying :gopray2:

Why only have ONE day a year to show someone you love them? It’s just another commercialized holiday, promoted to increase sales of chocolates, jewelry, and flowers. If you’re lonely, or the hubby just forgot, it can be very uncomfortable to see others getting things sent to them at work, and the ones that do can fool themselves into thinking they’re better than someone who didn’t get anything. I remember those little Valentine’s cards at school, when it was a good opportunity to EXCLUDE someone else.
Whatever. Just give her flowers out of the blue on like July 15th. Take her out to dinner after a long week. Don’t wait until the ONE day everyone else is.

I recently learned that in Japan, there is an interesting riff on St. Valentine’s Day: On February 14th, women give milk or dark chocolate to the men they like (family members, co-workers they’re friends with, their boyfriend/husband). Then, one month later, the men give chocolate to the women they like (again, family members, co-workers, their girlfriend/wife), and it’s usually the opposite color of what they got (dark if it was milk, white if it was dark). The reason for the specific colors? To keep the guys from regifting the chocolate they got, since regifting in Japan is frowned upon.

No, I don’t like Valentine’s Day-it sucks.

I also don’t like it because it was on that day in 2000 that our first dog, a Westie named ‘Murphy’, was put to sleep because he had cancer. How I cried when I left the vet’s office! 😦 :crying: And as ‘luck’ would have it-six years later in the same month (but not the same day) I had to put my second dog, a Jack Russell/hound mix named “Tia” to sleep. So February is not a ‘kind’ month for me.

I never had a boyfriend when I was young. They always teased and tormented me. It was only when I was a sophomore in high school that they began to respect me. But I never got asked to a prom or a ball. 🤷 Guess I wasn’t ‘pretty’ or ‘popular’ enough…

I have had some male friendships, but nothing that resulted in marriage. Once I sent a single red rose in a vase as a gesture of friendship to two male friends-it seems that I was always the one to do things like that, not the other way around! [to clarify: both got the same gift]

My mother sometimes would give me a valentine card to try and cheer me up…well, that’s not the same as a guy giving it…but I guess her heart was in the right place.

I’ve pretty much given up on ‘love’ in a romantic sense. Who wants a 54 year old woman? Men only want the young and the firm, not the ‘middle-aged and flabby’ !

I am completely, absolutely sick and tired of the constant din of having to buy my wife jewelry, flowers, chocolates, cards, dinner, lingerie jst to prove my love for her by the retailers of our country.

Working twelve hours a day and washing the dishes everynight, coaching sports, fixing the house, shoveling snow etc. etc. etc. (wether I feel like it or not) is enough to prove my love for her. I will buy a card and make her a nice meal at home put on a movie for the kids and we can sit in the dining room and have a little alone time and gaze at each other and then pass out because it has been such a long week. Every week is long with six kids-right?

Let’s take back St. Valentine’s Day and make it what it is supposed to be. Show somebody you love by caring for them, not buy purchasing consumer goods.

God Bless you all.

I like it as the feast day of Saint Valentine. He never gets the respect he should. He isn’t even recognized as a person on his day. But for who he was, I am happy to honor him. I just don’t like the commercialization of it, but that goes with any holiday or day of “importance”. But it is nice to acknowledge your loves ones. Send them a card telling them you love them or something. But nothing else should be needed. One thing I like about all the feast days of The Church, is to remind us of importance in our lives. Each feast day of a saint and their patronage reminds us to do something each day.

Help me in my movement to refer to the HolyDay as “Saint Valentine’s Day”. Let’s not let the secular world steal or transform the true meaning of holidays/holy days.
