With Valentine’s day rapidly approaching, I’ve been left with a familiar feeling.

Dislike for the day.

When my sister lived with us, before she got married, she would always go out on Valentine’s day. I was left at home, always feeling left out of the whole valentine’s day experience. No dates, no sweethearts (save for the candy ones) and no fun.

Even after I turned 18, that still didn’t change. So I wondered, “Am I the only one?”

Do YOU like Valentine’s day, or do you hate it?
Is it acceptable to hate it? Is it wrong to feel jealous?
Is it a wonderful experience for you?

Discuss anything to do with this issue, I suppose.

I never thought much if it when I was young… it was just a fun day to exchange candy, wear red and pink, and color hearts everywhere!
I didn’t date much in high school, so the day was never anything to get worked up over anything romantic.
I started dating my husband during college… and Valentine’s Day was one of our first “dates” out together (we went to Red Lobster 😛 and I think we saw a movie)… so ever since then it’s just been a fun night to have a date night.
I love it, personally!

There needs to be an option for indifference. I don’t have any reason to celebrate it, but I don’t begrudge anyone the opportunity either.

It is something that was made up by greeting card and flower companies. Silliness.

It’s just another day, for me.

It slightly annoyed me when I lacked a sweetheart, and it slightly annoys me now (and I’m happily married). 😃 My “valentine’s day” is my anniversary, and we only get to celebrate it on years when I don’t have an exclusively-nursing baby.

I’m usually a fairly sentimental/emotional girl, but for some strange reason, having a random day in February when the price of a bouquet of flowers triples and it’s impossible to eat out anywhere, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.

Now, Mother’s Day, I like! 👍

i think it is silly… dont you want to show people your love EVERY day of the year!? Haha… but personally, it is a fun day to relax and enjoy yourselves with your loved ones =]

I don’t really care for the day.

If I were a guy, I think I’d feel pressure to make sure and buy the right candy & flowers or whatever. Besides, like I tell my fiance: I like flowers and chocolate every day, not just once a year 😛

Anyway, we were talking yesterday and I said “So, do we have any Valentine’s Day plans?” He looked confused and said, “Huh? Oh, right … I always forget that’s in February - no we’re not doing anything!” We’ll probably end up snuggled together on the couch watching a movie eating popcorn; in other words, a usual Friday night for us!

Aw crud, the “I don’t care for it” option was just meant to be “I don’t care” in general .
sorry about that.

Well I see that people just view it as another day. I guess that’s OK.
But when everyone around you make a big deal out of it…ugh…

I think that Valentine’s Day is just a day for couples to lord their relationships over the singles.

Ok, I’m just jealous.
I know I would end up liking it if someting good actually happened on the day.
The day HAS been commercialized, though.

I only like it when it’s **SAINT VALENTINE’S DAY:heart: **. all the other secularized, sexy underwear brouhaha is malarkey.

oh. and i only like it if i receive something in sterling silver.

I liked it well enough until I started working in a flower shop. It’s the single busiest day of the whole year. We have men three and four deep the whole length of the counter, and they all want a dozen roses while they wait. Except for the ones who call at 3 or 4 in the afternoon and want something DELIVERED TODAY!!

Please, gentlemen, I BEG YOU, order your flowers today (yes, that’s 10 days ahead). Everyone will be glad you did.

The Valentine of whom you speak is a saint. I kind of like saints.

Of course I KNOW That its St. Valentine’s day…

But I was speaking of it as just the romantic “holiday” that it is now.

There’s nothing wrong with being more romantic on a particular day, I suppose…

And there’s nothing wrong treating it like a saint’s day.
I was just curious is all…👍

It’s just another Hallmark holiday.

I don’t like it because of how sexualized it’s become. There is this expectation that guys have to do something special and women have to do something … perhaps a little more special … afterward. I wish I lived in a more Catholic area. 😦

I also really hate the jewelry commercials that tell you that you must spend money to be a real man and show love – as if women only care about things that glitter and sparkle. It’s degrading.

There’s nothing wrong with being extra romantic on a certain day, but to have that day be set on a calendar every year for the rest of your life removes the spontaneity.

Those candy hearts, however, are strangely addictive… 😃

no holiday that involves chocolate can be all bad

we usually teach theology of the Body and Christian sexual morality during February in the teen grades, so I like it for that reason, because our guest speakers on these topics are excellent. When the parents participate they are amazed to find out what the Church really teaches on love and sexuality.

I LOVE Valentines Day. I send cards in my kids’ lunches and my husband gets me chocolate. Plus I look good in red.

If Valentines Day makes you sad because you don’t have a sweatheart, can I suggest you purchase or handmake some lovely heart cards and drop them off at your local nursing home? Better yet, walk around and say hello, hand delivering them yourself. The residents will love it because I promise you, no matter how lonely you feel that day, THEY feel worse. You could include a scripture verse or even a God loves you soooo much! Trust me, you will feel so good knowing you made their day. ❤️

I just got back from my weekly visit at the nursing home. I met a lovely woman today, oldest of 10 children, she grew up on farm and rose at 5am to help milk the cows. In MINNESOTA !! :winter: She proudly told me she was Catholic her whole life! She also said she turns 88 next week. God bless her! See…someone just like her could be YOUR sweetheart this year!!! 🙂

All Valentine’s Day is today is a reason for wives and girlfriends to blackmail guys into buying them gifts.

That is why I swore them off years ago.

Call me a cynic, but I have nothing for Valentine’s Day.

It has turned into such marketing nonsense that it has no meaning other than to send people into stores. Luckily, my wife feels about the same way. We just keep it as another day and leave out the gifts we really never wanted.

I got into a car accident on Valentine’s day, two weeks after getting my driver’s license. :o

But but, that’s just about when we’re running out of Christmas candy! 😉
