Do you NOT like Valentine's day?

I like it but I’d prefer to use it to celebrate the love of the people in my life (regardless of whether or not they are a romantic love) and to use it to extend to the people who don’t have love. I feel a charity vibe on V-Day.

It is actually the celebration of an early Christian martyr and Jesus did say that there is no greater love than to lay down your life for those you love. So I see it as a day of love and sacrifice.

I agree. We were in Walmart the other day, and they have this ENTIRE section… devoted to flimsy negligees… boxer shorts… champagne flutes… candles and bubble bath. It was disgusting… like a whole “INDULGE YOURSELF” section.

Remember the days, when school kids would cut little hearts out of red construction paper? The innocence has gone out of “Valentine’s Day”.

I ignore it. It’s just a ploy, to sell cards and encourage people to be over-indulgent. Yeck.
 
For that matter, Valentine’s Day as a holiday goes back as far as the medieval age. Geoffrey Chaucer (aka “Canterbury Tales” guy) wrote about it in his “Parliment of Fowls”. Seems there was a belief at the time that birds find their mates on the feast of St. Valentine, so it was considered a good day to go looking for a potential spouse.

Wow, that’s a nice bit of information!!

Oddly enough…And I just remembered this…I have an evil plan that will come into effect on the day after Valentine’s Day…Ok, its not evil, but I like it. And the timing is both odd and cool. It has to do with someone…

I think it’s fun to have a whole day just to focus on love:love:
My honey and I don’t buy gifts and we don’t always buy cards. I make cards for the kids and their classmates. I will make a special dinner and put out napkins with hearts on them.
My daughter who is first grade, her teacher sent home a note that we can come in and decorate our kids desks as a surprise. We go in the night before their Valentines day party and then when they get to school the next day, their desks will be covered with hearts and notes. Or, if you can’t come in, like me:( you can send in notes and decorations in an envelope and she will do it for you! She is decorating the desks of any kids whose parents don’t do it too. So they will have a big surprise! I think it’s sweet!!

totally understand where you’re coming from, but really, who never really wants flowers and chocolate?! 😛 😉
 
I always used to get way too worked up about the day. I would make a gorgeous Valentine for the guy I liked, and end up stuffing it in a drawer and forgetting about it when I found I didn’t receive anything.

Then I would make Valentines for Jesus; that was pretty good. But they still ended up in a drawer.

Then I decided to make it “charity day” and that worked out well. A good time to tell people in your life you care – maybe spend time with a friend you always mean to have more time for – or hang out with single friends who may be feeling down. I like to get them chocolate.

Since I’ve been in a relationship, I always wanted to do something special. One year I got a poem. But for the most part, my fiance is actively opposed to the holiday. He says it’s a commercialized corruption of a saint’s day and he refuses to be a part of it. It is the least romantic day of the year for him! So I have to stick it out at home … 😛

I guess that makes it easier for me to show charity to the single people, though! I mean – I won’t be jetting off with a guy and leaving them jealous.
 
I’ve never liked Valentine’s Day. When you’re single and have always been single, it’s just another day.
 
Since I’m not a hearts and flowers kind of girl, Valentine’s Day isn’t a very big deal to me. But I don’t think that means that nobody should love it 🙂 Just because society tries to pervert it into something totally commercialized doesn’t mean the holiday itself is bad-----we’d have to toss Christmas right out the door, too, if we used society’s treatment of the holiday as reason to dislike it.

Living in a part of the country that suffers very cold/snowy winters, having a bit of a pick-me-up in mid-February is a good thing 😃 The vibrant colors and flowers can help counterract some of the Seasonal Affective Disorder some of us suffer from 😉

I particularly liked the idea of turning into a day of bringing a little cheer and love to those who might be feeling particularly lonely----like our elderly neighbors in nursing homes. What a fantastic idea! I think observing Valentine’s Day in THAT way might help lift single people out of their funk. There’s nothing like getting out and helping others to lift you out of a pityparty (I should know, I’ve had enough pityparties of my own in my life!!)

The timing of it all was carefully planned out, a month in advance. And I’m in the closing days, and its all coming together.
 
Couldn’t care less about the commercialized part (except that it drives sales at work but who knows this year since I haven’t been called in in weeks).

However, it is the Feast of my Baptism as a baby and becoming a member of the Catholic Church. So the day has merit. And the feast of St. Cyril and St. Methodius (which sounds like such a cool name to me).

Plus, it’s also the day Arizona officially became a state in 1912 and Oregon became a state in 1859.

I like it, but our anniversary ir 10 days earlier so we only use it as an excuse to refill the candy supplies, usually done just after the 14th.

You have to understand, there is the Julian Calendar, the Gregorian Calendar and the Chocolatian Calendar.
Christmas – Valentines Day – Easter – Mothers Day – Fathers Day – July 4th — August 13th (Hershey’s Birth [observed]) — September 13th (Hershey’s Birth [actual] – Halloween — Thanksgiving — Christmas.
  • Remember, there are two kinds of people in the world. Those who love chocolate, and communists.
  • Research indicates that 14 out of every 10 people love chocolate.

I haven’t really DONE anything just yet…But I plan to. Let’s just say I plan to look “Spiffy”…Too vague?..well, as reluctant as I am to reveal my secret evil schemes to everyone…I may as well…(After all, I don’t believe SHE will be reading this) I got a couple of suits (My first ever) and I plan to show up to Mass on the 15th wearing one. Of course, it’ll be surprising to her, since I didn’t tell her. My goal is to make her go weak at the knees…yep, she did that to me once when she got her hair cut to shoulder-length…Its payback time…heheh
The timing was hard to pull off, since there are other factors I won’t get into here on the forum…Those are the more…evil…parts…lol…OK, not evil, but kinda funny
