Do you pray the Rosary clockwise or counter-clockwise?

I pray the rosary counter-clockwise. Always have, but I never thought about it. I think it’s because I’m so used to going to the right. When you’re driving, you pass people on the right. When you’re walking it’s the same. Maybe that’s why? I also notice when I go to the movies I always go to the door on the right.

Maybe it’s because all the diagrams I’ve seen of how to pray the rosary always show the first decade as the one on the right.

I’m left-handed, but I use my right hand to hold the beads! Go figure! I go counter-clockwise – that’s the way my Rosary brochure instructs.

Meggie, you made me laugh…“most of the time I get past the apostles creed and fall asleep so its neither direction for me…”

And I thought I was the only one who fell asleep while praying the Rosary in bed! What a delicious way to fall asleep, though.

I do that too! And in the morning there’s a rosary under my pillow.
 
One time an old priest started chewing me out for that and was like “that’s so disrespectful! You should be ashamed, it is this kind of action that leads to sloppy church attendance, you should respect the rosary as a gift, its not a toy, Mary would be very dissapointed if she was standing right here!”

The younger, more pious priest overheard and gentally put his hand on hia sholder, “Don’t you know Mary loves to put her children to bed?”

That is very touching.

Praying the Rosary til you fall asleep is a great way to fall asleep, and as Lovelavendar pointed out, to then wake up with the Rosary under your pillow is a great way to wake up.
 
This is silly.
When people make rosaries how do they start? Do they go clockwise or counterclockwise. Is one rosary better than the other?
What if I don’t have a rosary and am using my hands? Should I start counting with my right hand or left hand. Should I start with my thumb or pinkie. When the Blessed Mother told us to pray the rosary, I don’t think she set down the specifics and which was better. Thats just like saying, “When you go to mass, how do you kneel? Do you go down with your right knee first or with your left, or both at the same time.” Which is better?
Or the commandment “Honor your Father and your Mother.” Should I honor my father first then then honor my mother, or can I honor my mother first and then my father?

Just concentrate on the Mysteries of our Lord when praying the rosary and don’t get distracted which way you are going. You do know who is the one that wants to distract you?

A priest told me when I was a teen that there was no better way of falling asleep than praying the rosary. I never could fall asleep cause I wanted to finish all of it.
Of course my mom used to tell us a story that her sister (who had already passed away before she got married) would insist on using a small rosary rather than a large one. That way she could finish praying faster since it was smaller. 😃

I think it is more comfportable that the dominant hand is on the outside, which probably attributes for the counter-clockwise dominance in practice - most people are right handed.

Fun poll! I don’t think there is a right way. But I was taught counter-clockwise, probably because the nun who taught us was right handed too.

My grandmother use to say that when you fall asleep while saying a rosary, that the angels finish it for you.

Thanks. I became curious when I realized I did it counter-clockwise but finally figured it must be because I’m right-handed. I then began to wonder if there was anything negative about doing it that way. So far no-one seems to think so.
 
I always fall asleep when I pray the rosary, too. It seems that I just close my eyes for one second, and before I know it… :sleep:
I sometimes have trouble finding it in the morning, though. It could be tangled up in my blankets, on the floor, under me, under my pillow, and any number of places. It never ceases to amaze me how many different places my rosary can get to. 😃
 
It varies all the time, however, with very few exceptions, I pray with rosary in my left hand. I’m ambidexterous, :confused: I write with both hands equally and I bowl just as poorly with my right hand as with my left hand.:yup:

With my grandma’s old rosary in my right hand, I go counter-clockwise…BUT with the Knights of Columbus Rosary ring on my right ring finger, I go clockwise unless I am holding the steering wheel of the van, and my finger tip points the rosary the other way, then it would be counter-clockwise.:whacky:
If I am using my Marian Foundation Rosary CD, and don’t have my KC ring, I let them count while I concentrate (both on prayers and driving!)
Now, when I am at the gym, I am using my own two God-given hands and I start counting on my left fingers. Before I lay me down to sleep, I hold the entire rosary tightly, and simply clench my right fingers in turn slightly more as I count off the prayers…and yes, I let the angels finish my rosaries said at night.
Interesting topic, but why are we here instead of praying counter-clockwise??😉

I am praying the Rosary counter-clockwise.
I am left-handed and I hold the Rosary in my left hand but I use my right to go over the beads.
That is the way I learned from my Rosary card ; it’s teaching to go counter-clockwise so that’s how I’m doing.
As I know there is no the right or the wrong dirrection.

I walk every morning around our retirement park and pray the complete rosary. I alternate the direction of my walk daily, somedays I turn right as I start, some days I turn left but either way I encircle the entire complex with prayer for residents, workers and their families.

When I broke my left hand I had to write with my right and I learned in 3 months (while my left was broken) writing with my right the same as with my left. I can write with both hand at the same time and I am drawing with both hands two different things in the same time and all thank’s to this stone I steped on, fall and broke my strong hand (left).
 
I pray the rosary counter-clockwise, mainly because this is what the diagrams I learned from show. I’m sort of ambidexterous, but counter-clockwise still feels right to me.

I have one rosary that replaces the single Our Father bead for each decade with three little symbol beads, one each for the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries (this was manufactured before the addition of the Luminous mysteries). The first set of mysteries is to the right of the centerpiece, so I guess counter-clockwise is the correct direction for that rosary.
 
The pamphlets that I have been flooded with show the left bead as first working around (which would be clockwise).

For no particular reason I pray the Rosary counter-clockwise.

I was never taught specifically to do it that way, but I have always prayed the Rosary counter-clockwise. Possibly because I am right-handed, I use my right hand to finger the beads as I pray, so I start off on the right hand side of the Rosary?
