**The First Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony in the Garden
1)Jesus came with them to Gethsemane./ And sadness came over him, and great distress.
2)Then he said, ‘My soul is sorrowful to the point of death./ Wait here and keep awake with me.’
3)Then he withdrew from them,/ and knelt down and prayed.
4)‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me./ Nevertheless, let your will be done, not mine.’
5)Then an angel appeared to him,/ coming from heaven to give him strength.
6)In his anguish/ he prayed even more earnestly.
7)And his sweat fell to the ground/ like great drops of blood.
8)Then he came back to his disciples and found them sleeping,/ and he said, ‘So you had not the strength to keep awake with me one hour?’
9)‘You should be awake,/ and praying no to be put to the test.’
1)‘The spirit is willing,/ but the flesh is weak.’
The Second Sorrowful Mystery: The Scourging at the Pillar
1)They had Jesus bound and handed him over to Pilate./ Pilate questioned him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’
2)Jesus replied, ‘Mine is not a kingdom of this world;/ but yes, I am a king.’
3)‘I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth;/ and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.’
‘4)Truth?’ said Pilate, ‘What is that?’;/ and with that he went out again to the Jews and said, ‘I find no case against him.’
5)‘So I shall have him flogged and then let him go.’/ Pilate then had Jesus taken away and scourged.
6)Despised and rejected by men,/ a man of sorrows.
7)Harshly dealt with, he bore it humbly,/ like a lamb that is led to the slaughterhouse.
8)Yet he was pierced through for our faults,/ crushed for our sins.
9)Ours were the sufferings he bore,/ ours the sorrows he carried.
10)On him lies a punishment that brings us peace,/ and through his wounds we are healed.
The Third Sorrowful Mystery - The Crowning with Thorns
1)The soldiers led him away to the Praetorium./ Then they stripped him and dressed him up in purple.
2)And having twisted some thorns into a crown they put this on his head/ and placed a reed in his right hand.
3)To make fun of him they knelt to him/ saying, ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’
\4)And they spat on him/ and took the reed and struck him on the head.
5)Then Pilate took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd/ and said, ‘I am innocent of this man’s blood. It is your concern.’
6)Jesus then came out/ wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.
7)‘Here is your king,’ said Pilate./ ‘Take him away!’ they said. ‘Crucify him!’
‘8)Why, what harm has he done?’/ But they shouted all the louder, ‘Crucify him!’
‘9)Do you want me to crucify your king?’/ The chief priests answered, ‘We have no king except Caesar.’
10)So Pilate, anxious to placate the crowd,/ handed him over to be crucified.
The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery - The Carrying of the Cross
1)‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine,/ let him renounce himself.’
2)‘And take up his cross every day/ and follow me.’
3)And carrying his own cross/ they led him out to crucify him.
4)And they seized on a man, Simon from Cyrene,/ and made him shoulder the cross and carry it behind Jesus.
5)‘Shoulder my yoke/ and learn from me.’
6)‘For I am gentle/ and humble in heart.’
7)‘And you will find rest for your souls./ Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’
8)Large numbers of people followed him,/ and of women too, who mourned and lamented for him.
9)But Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me;/ weep rather for yourselves and for your children.’
10)‘For if men use the green wood like this,/ what will happen when it is dry?’
The Fifth Sorrowful Mystery - The Crucifixion
1)When they reached the place called The Skull,/ they crucified him.
2)Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them;/ they do not know what they are doing.’
3)One of the criminals crucified with him said, ‘Jesus, remember me/ when you come into your kingdom.’
‘4)Indeed, I promise you,’ he replied/ ‘today you will be with me in paradise.’
5)Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother/ and the disciple he loved.
6)Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son.’/ Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother.’
7)And from that moment/ the disciple made a place for her in his home.
8)And a darkness came over the whole land, and the earth quaked;/ and the veil of the Temple was torn in two.
9)And Jesus cried out in a loud voice,/ ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.’
10)And bowing his head/ he breathed his last. **
