Mass attendance peaked in about 1957 and started dropping off from there. So forget the implied card you want to play, that it was somehow due to the OF.

There was a reason we had bells

I really do appreciate your insight. I just wanted to point out that the original reasons for the sanctus bells were to:

• Alert those near the church but not at Mass (servants, laborers, etc.) that something supernatural was taking place inside

and

• To make a joyous sound in thanks and celebration.

I also want to underscore something you posted:

And what you fail to recognize is that the priests who wish to say the EF now do so far more solemnly and reverently than a whole lot of weekday masses - and for that matter, Sunday Masses - were said long ago. People who go to the EF now go because that is what they want. Those who went to them prior to V2 went because that was all that was available.

If you want a pure, unadulterated guess - as I don’t know if any of the ballots were ever associated with any individual - I choose not to make one for a very simple reason - I have absolutely no proof whatsoever.

I would presume they may have all ended up in the archives; but again, unless there was writing on them and someone could do a hand writing analysis, I doubt we will ever know; the other alternative would be if one or more of the four publicly acknowledged their negative vote. Perhaps one or more did; I have never heard about it.

Latin was not universally required. Some high schools may have required it, and even then, not universally. There actually was a time where there were courses designed to teach kids a trade - particularly valuable for those who were not going on to college; and Latin was not required of them.
