Do you sing a hymn to Mary?

Just came back from the Sunset Mass. One of those Marian devotional songs was sung for the recessional hymn. I should say our Worship Team, the choir on duty, did a special flavor to the rendition of this rather very ordinary song. They started solemnly and reverently but as the song progressed they moved on to a catchier beat. It was quite beautiful to behold and I can say that I was quite touched especially as one who does not hold to Marian devotional as anything other than intercessory prayer.

Quite a good section of the youth at the Cathedral who are largely Charismatic seemed to be taken in to participate enthusiastically in the song. It was rather a lovely scene; to see the youth taking positively to the hymn.

This thread is not meant to be comprehensive; just a show of hands: so do you sing a hymn to Mary? If yes, how, what and why? If no, why?

My parish ends every daily mass with a hymn to Mary:
  • “Salve Regina” during ordinary time
  • “Alma Redemptoris Mater” during Advent and Christmas
  • “Ave Regina Caelorum” during Lent
  • and the beautiful “Regina Caeli” during Easterstide
All Gregorian chant in Latin, all a capella.

Weekend masses rarely see a Marian hymn, unless it’s one of Our Lady’s feast days, or the May crowning.

I would find that a very difficult thing…sing it, I suppose I could. Mean it. No.
 
No, I do not sing a hymn to Mary. Even when I was a Catholic, I could not do it and mean it. I find nothing in scripture that supports singing hymns to anyone other than God.
 
The Orthodox Church sings at least one every week at a set point in the liturgy. My parish (under orders from the Archbishop) also sings another one at the end of the service.

As for the bible not saying to sing hymns to anyone but god, the word “hymn” itself (according to Liddell and Scott) means “An ode to gods or heroes”, dictionary.com expands on that and says nations and “etc.”, so if you sing a national anthem you’re singing a hymn not to God. 😉

I imagine you do a lot of things which are non-biblical, which at the same time no one could possibly fault you for doing. Clearly the bible, although giving a guideline for how to live our lives, is not completely comprehensive.

2 May crownings in CCD today, English session chose Immaculate Mary, Spanish session chose Santa Maria del Camino (ven con nosotros al cominar, Santa Maria, ven) which I also love. Official May crowning will be at Mass tomorrow, with Immaculate Mary, we never sing Regina Coeli any more, much less “On this day o beautiful Mother”

I am not finding the text to A Mighty Fortress is our God, How Great Thou Art, Amazing Grace, The Church’s One Foundation, or Give me that Old-Time religion in the bible, can you guide me, yet they are all based on biblical truths. honor to Mary is honor to her Son–you gotta problem with that?

I strive to do nothing non Biblical in my worship to God. The Bible is all there is

You bet Mary worship is anti Biblical and Anti Christ.
 
Me thinks someone needs to look a beyond his nose and actually use the grey matter. We don’t worship Mary… don’t call what you THINK we do Anti Christ

So you never participate in altar calls? Or shout “amen!” or “praise Jesus!” in the middle of a sermon? Never participate in a baptism that is done anywhere but in a river? Do not sing opening and closing hymns in church? Do not sit in pews, but rather stand or sit on the ground?

Because every one of those things, among many many other common church activities, are non-biblical too.

For Lutherans, at least in America, it just isn’t part of our practice and piety. Lutherans hold the Blessed Virgin in the highest regard, and give thanks to God for what she did in bringing the Christ into the world, and standing by Him in a way not matched by any other human.
The scriptural “Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Amen.”, is perfectly acceptable.

I see nothing wrong in singing a hymn about her, or any of the saints.

Singing is not worship.

Worship is offering the Eucharist… we only offer the Eucharist to God.

Singing is just singing, it’s like praying… communicating with someone… we talk to Mary cause she’s our Mother… that’s not worship… we honour her, in fact Jesus honoured her too 🙂
 
Me, too!

My former pastor sang Regina Coeli for certain times of the year in Latin. Believe it is in Easter season…now.

so in other words, you do not have a leg to stand on with your views, and you realize this? thats actually a very good sign on your part. if you want to take on the biblical evidence for the Catholic view on Mary, ill be here. Peace 🙂
