Synagouge’s did not replace the Temple. Even when it stood, there were many jews who lived to far away to go to the Temple but who still wanted to communicate with God. As someone has already pointed out, the sacrifices took place at the Temple. Synagouges were used for prayer (and yes, there was also prayer at the Temple, but it’s main purpose was in being the place where sacrifices were carried out).
Obviously, after the Temple’s destruction, prayer “repalced” sacrifice. The concept that prayer was of utmost importance was one that was held during, as well as after Temple times.
