Do you think it is morally permissible to spend $5,000 or more for pet surgery?

No, no I’m not. I had a good friend who had a dog with congenital heart disease and he commonly posted on a dog forum. There were a large, large number of posters who acted in this manner. One could say that a forum is not a good sample representation as people had to seek out the forum, but there were enough people sharing their own experience to safely say by the quantity of respondees and threads that their numbers were in the hundreds, if not thousands.

Were you on this forum or is this anecdotal?

It’s OK if it’s a kitten or cat which will then have a good quality of life. 🙂

Yes, I’ve been on dog forums. I no longer participate because the moderators allowed for IP tracing and would “report” people for animal cruelty for having to surrender a pet that bit or because their child was allergic (child should be forced take allergy pills) or because they chose to put their pet down rather than seek treatment. It was highly secular and NOT good.

There is an Animal Hospital in NY called, Animal Medical Center. They have a cancer care unit, their DVMs are crossover MDs. They do cancer care & research in affiliation with Weil/Cornell, The Rockefeller Institute, Memorial Sloan Kettering & NYU. Many experimental cancer drugs are given to animals in research programs before being applied to human care. If, you have the money & or pet insurance; why not?
I wanted to go back to this post because this is what gets me in a conundrum about spending money on pets. PETA and others have destroyed the medical community’s ability to test on animals. This leads to human suffering as drugs are never developed past a certain stage or are tested on humans with catastrophic results. However, a new and lucrative market has come about…people willing to do extensive and experimental methods on pets.

I know that surgeries on horses have become examples that are used in join reconstruction in the military. Heck, there was even a movie on how a scientist developed a prosthetic for an injured dolphin and that technology has been used to help amputees, especially child ones.

So I do think there is some leeway. I’m just not sure where the frivolity line is.

One can really see who are animal haters and have no regard to God’s creations . We can only pray that "christian " people may love and take care of all of God’s creation . We pray that one will never have to apply their cruel indifference of animals to their loved ones . St Francis , we pray for your intercession in the name of Jesus .

" Sinful " would be having no consideration for one of God’s beautiful creations , be it Man or beast . Man , being God’s most perfect creation , should understand that we are to love and care for all of God’s awesome creation . There is always a means of helping our fellow brother or sister that share this most holy beautiful earth , be it human or animal . Mankind has such a fallen nature ,Most holy God , may we always love and forgive each other, who do not know better . God have mercy on us , we pray .

2418 It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly. It is likewise unworthy to spend money on them that should as a priority go to the relief of human misery.
These things seem to be prudential. Is it morally wrong to spend $35K on a new car when you could have bought a new Honda Fit for $20K and given the $15K left over for the relief of human misery? Is it wrong to spend $400K for a house that has a large garage, when you could have spent $350K for a house that has a somewhat smaller garage and the flooring is not as plush? You could have given the $50K left over for the relief of human misery?

9 times out of 10, the compassionate person who helps the sick or injured animal is also going to be the compassionate person who donates money to relieve the misery of a human, because they are a kind person generally.
The two things are hardly mutually exclusive.
Pretty sure the Magisterium recognizes this.

Which dog forum is this?
I find it hard to believe law enforcement is going to waste time tracking ips to real people over claims of cruelty such as you describe.
There arent enough resources and support for it. USA has a rampant illegal dog fighting activity going on. Yes , i can see law enforcement getting involved there, or in a case of a dangerous dog, or a mauling. But not the trivial stuff.

But this is way off topic.

I feel if you have a sick animal or pet under your care that you have the moral obligation, within your financial boundaries to treat.

On a dog yes. On a cat no.

I actually think this is a personal issue that we can’t give an absolute answer too. The answer for a fantastically wealthy person would be different than for a poor person.

Although the question is asked for a pet the answer would be different for a working animal. Again the answer would be different for well trained work dog, or a horse or even certain livestock. The answer would be different for zoo animals.

But I will say I am often shocked at what some people spend on pets. I am more shocked how most people seem to now value animals more than people. Actually I’m not shocked. I am just sad.

I don’t see where you’re going here and I do hope your previous post was not aimed towards any poster in particular because those sort of statements are against forum rules when directed to a poster in particular.

I do believe that it is sinful to have animals suffer just to keep us happy. If an animal say, has cancer and a large, untreatable tumor that causes them pain it is sinful and cruel to keep them alive just for our pleasure. I do not extend that to service animals, however, because a person may rely on them for their very life and therefore may keep that animal alive in order to enable them to live. But just for happiness alone? No.

I also think that if you must go into debt to “save” an animal when it will cause your family harm that is very wrong. It would be sinful to take from a child and give it to dogs-that’s not cruel, that’s Biblical. If that means the animal must be put down, that’s unfortunately what it means.

According to the forum rules it would be wrong for me to post it…or atleast against the old forum rules. Yes, there is dog fighting but one must remember there are MANY keyboard warriors and MANY people willing to destroy someone’s life over offenses. America is having a heck of a time with illegal doxing (both deserved and undeserved).

It is so " sinful " for Christians who claim to love their fellow brothers in Christ but not care for the well being of the beautiful creatures , God , has given us to share this planet , that are in pain . There are some who start out mistreating /abusing and killing cats and dogs /small animals because of some mental disorder before they go to abusing /killing people . How we treat and care for these vulnerable innocent creatures reflect how we treat and care for our fellow human brothers . We pray and trust in God that if ever we can not afford medical care for our beloved pets , God will hear and answer our prayers . One can sense when one is a animal hater . Our pets give us only unconditional love . God have mercy on us . St Francis , we pray to God for your intercession for caring all animals on earth . Peace to all

Again are you trying to insinuate that one is an “animal hater” if they put an animal to sleep rather than spend thousands on a surgery? If so, that’s a really big (and likey morally incorrect) statement given that most people (at least in America) do not have thousands to spend on their own health, nevermind a pets.

Comparing actively abusing a pet with refusing to spend thousands on surgery is beyond the pale.

Our pets give us only unconditional love .
Pets can’t love. They do show affection. They certainly can’t show unconditional love. We should be kind to animals because needlessly hurting them harms our human soul.

I don’t know. Putting an animal that is suffering down is sometimes kinder, even if there is money available. I have had to do this on several occasions. When I was dirt poor, I even had to do it myself. Even the poor should be able to own a pet as long as they can afford to feed it.

There is always that one person that always wants to refute anything and everything they do not understand or have never encountered God’s beauty in one’s interaction with God’s creatures in their lives . They believe that an animal has to speak up and literally verbally use words to say to their loved one " I love you unconditionally " . Poor wretched soul that has not experienced the beautiful awesome indescribable "stare "of their " pet " or any animal’s eyes transfixed to one’s own eyes . Man’s love for their fellow man is the ultimate in earthly love , of course . Praise your Holy Name Oh Lord for all of Your most holy blessed creation . Some would then even question the love one shows to The Holy Eucharist from not actually seeing Jesus himself present in body . Oh God let me remain stupid and ignorant in the ways of the world .God have mercy on all of us .
