The wealthy had pets that were only pets, but of course people everywhere have always had a companionship relationship with animals they kept for a purpose.How do you know that only the wealthy had a pet?

(I have heard that a better translation than dogs who ate scraps would have been puppy dogs who ate scraps, which suggests an affectionate sort of position in the family.)Didn’t that one Samaritan woman tell Jesus that even the dogs ate scraps from their master?
