i have made vows/promises to God that i found out later i could not keep…A vow is defined as a promise made to God. The promise is binding, and so differs from a simple resolution which is a present purpose to do or omit certain things in the future.
Did I give you any hint that Jesus is not God?Jesus was/is God…
This needs clarification. I am a Latin rite Catholic, though, so I am not the most qualified person to clarify. You describe it as “permit priests to marry” as if you might mean that men who are currently unmarried and are currently priests are allowed to marry. This is not so. Rather, men who are currently married and are currently not priests are allowed to become priests, most likely with permission of the wife required. Also, bishops are not chosen from the married. This is my general understanding. The Eastern Rites of the Catholic church permit priests to marry. I remember, years ago, actually meeting a priest of the Ruthenian Catholic (Eastern Catholic) church, who had a wife in tow and two twin boys!
so, did anyone here say it was something otherwise??Agreed. I get annoyed with this talk of “falling in love”. “Falling in love” means a sexual/romantic infatuation, not real love. Real love is not something you fall into or get swept away by. Real love is a decision you make to treat a person in a certain way no matter what.
can i say what i really think on this?? Not to be rude, but i think you have a very distorted and incomplete view of romantic love… While admittedly, many people DO give in to “lust”… and i agree there isn’t a lot of “true love” in this world, between men and women… sometimes there is… and frankly, who would know better about real love than someone who has spent his whole life studying Christ, his teachings, his Church?? I don’t think someone like that would be fooled by mere lust… or some “glandular” thing…A mature man, be he a married layman or a celibate priest, recognizes inappropriate romantic/sexual feelings for what they are - simple glandular urges that have no basis in true love and should be ignored.
Hopefully by the time a man is ordained a Catholic priest (at least 8 years), he will be that mature man I described above.
I resent the idea u seem to present that only a Catholic priest is a mature man… though i do have to admit he is usually probably far more mature than other men… (may not be saying much??) but then, who knows…Paul
No. Priests follow the example of Jesus Christ who was not married.
Poll after poll has shown that a very large number of catholic priests favor an option to marry. More then half of all catholics in the USA believe priests should have the option to marry. Its very obvious the catholic church is out of touch with its laity and its priests. Should all of these priests be excommunicated for their honesty. Why can't nuns marry? Why can't a man become a nun? We have men doctors/women doctors. We have female nurses/male nurses. The church keeps the devout in line with FEAR/GUILT and the possibility of committing a sin. Thats sad, but it works for the church.
The catholic church says men will receive a calling from god to become a priest. If a married man got a calling from god the catholic church would trump god and say "no your not, we make the rules".....UNBELIEVABLE!!
You have completely misread my post and my intent. I do believe in romantic love and I am happily and romantically married. But I recognize that lust must be tempered with mature reason and obedience to the gospel. A mature man does not leave a marriage or a celibate priesthood because of a roving eye. That is what I meant.so, did anyone here say it was something otherwise??

I know some extremely immature priests…
I have heard it said that men never grow up… whether one is talking about priests or whomever… and from my experience & what i have seen… i don’t have a hard time accepting that…
In any case, you are far too cynical, in my opinion… and i hope you are not married… I am just being honest but… if you are married i feel sorry for her…
I feel there is misogyny involved in some of the comments made here…
but there is also a disparaging of marriage… which God instituted as a sacrament…
I also believe it is unnatural to be celibate for very long periods of time unless one is a virgin…
but there aren’t too mnay of those in the U.S… over the age of 20…
I think only virgins should take such vows… because only they are likely to keep them…
“It is better to marry than to burn”… (Bible).
You’ve got something very strange going on in your head if you read that when I didn’t write it.A mature man, be he a married layman or a celibate priest,…
What is your source of information that Jesus was not married?. Just because the bible doesn’t talk about a wife doesn’t mean he wasn’t married. A large number of catholics/christians believe he was married. What difference does it make anyway. If Jesus had a beard should all priests or male catholics have a beard. Come on get real! No. Priests follow the example of Jesus Christ who was not married.
You live your life according to Jesus? Why not live your life according to what is right and wrong. Use your own conscience at least once. PLEASE!
The same is true for marriage, and for any other career. Should a young person not take a particular course of studies because of what may or may not happen in 20 years?I am not so sure this is a universally accepted notion of ordination vows… for one thing, how can a person be perpetually bound by oaths taken at one time in his life when he doesn’t know the future and how things can change in his cirucumstances/relationships?? When he is ordained, he may be 100% sure he wnts to be celibate becasue he isn’t in love with anyone and (etc.)… but in 20 yrs, things could change drastically.
Again, it’s the same with marriage, and with all of the other choices that people have to make when they are 18-25 years old.forever is a very long time… How can a mere human being make such a vow, pledging his future, as if he knows what that future will hold?
I’m curious, are Jews able to avoid the temptation of ABC better than us Christians?Nope. Not one, ever. And this is because in Jewish law, Jewish men MUST marry and have children. If they do not, they are considered only half a man. Incidentally, this was yet another reason why the Jewish people rejected Jesus as a messiah…because he never married.
More than 80 percent of Israelis don’t believe that prostitution should be a criminal offense, according to a new poll released by the Knesset’s Committee on the Status of Women Monday.I’m curious, are Jews able to avoid the temptation of ABC better than us Christians?
I don’t care if a large group of priests want to marry. They must follow Jesus Christ who was not married. That’s it. Over. Are you seriously debating over this since you yourself are a Catholic??? Don’t you know the answers AS a Catholic? apparently not. If you don’t think that Jesus was Divine, then I guess he was married…how absurd to not know this as a Catholic. Give me a break…What is your source of information that Jesus was not married?. Jesus was never a christian. He was born a jew, lived his life a jew, prayed in the jewish temple, wore tassels on his clothes as all orthodox jews did at the time and died a jew.Code:You live your life according to Jesus? The first pope and first CHRISTIAN leader was Peter. He was married. Your answer doesn’t hold water.
Why can’t nuns marry? The same answer to the reasons any catholic official is not allowed to get married. To keep a spouse from inheriting the priests assests when he dies. Its all about money my friend. Same reason a nun isn’t allowed to get married. Thats sad! But true.
You say " I don’t care if a large group of priests want to marry. They must follow Jesus Christ who was not married. Thats it. Over Done.I don’t care if a large group of priests want to marry. They must follow Jesus Christ who was not married. That’s it. Over. Done.
Catholics in the 50s 60s were taught that if you were bad god would punish you the nuns/priests would say. Today god is now a loving god he doesn't punish anymore. The new god through evolution I guess.
Its not just the priests who want the option to marry so DO MOST CATHOLICS. CNN just recently did an extensive poll and found over 65% of CATHOLICS in the USA favoured the option for priests to marry. 51% of catholics are pro choice for abortion (believe it or not) Also why can't nuns marry? Please answer with logical answers not just THATS IT.....How childish and non sensical!
Celibacy of the ClergyYou say " I don’t care if a large group of priests want to marry. They must follow Jesus Christ who was not married. Thats it. Over Done.
You sound like the old nuns and priests that taught me when growing up back in the 50s and 60s. JUST BELIEVE IT THEY WOULD SCREAM! Don’t question anything in the church. WHAT A JOKE.
I am still waiting for your logical answer of how you know Jesus the jew all his life was not married. Jewish law at the time states in the bible that a jewish man not married is only half a man…do you believe the bible? Obviously not. The bible is always right isn’t it! Lets see now. There are many catholic priests in the USA and around the world that believe they should have the option to marry. CNN recently did an extensive poll and found over 65% of CATHOLICS in the USA believe priests should have the option to marry. Are you saying all these priests/laity who want the option are not understanding of their catholic faith? Do you believe EVERYTHING the pope says......answer please.I can’t understand why women can’t be priests. It seems very logical to me that they ought to be.… Women can never be priests…
