On the other hand, one of our former pastors (now gone to his reward 17 years) was quite wealthy in his own right and left the parish a bequest of $500,000. Almost covered the cost of the new roof.

I am not so sure this is a universally accepted notion of ordination vows… for one thing, how can a person be perpetually bound by oaths taken at one time in his life when he doesn’t know the future and how things can change in his cirucumstances/relationships?? When he is ordained, he may be 100% sure he wnts to be celibate becasue he isn’t in love with anyone and (etc.)… but in 20 yrs, things could change drastically…

forever is a very long time… How can a mere human being make such a vow, pledging his future, as if he knows what that future will hold?

A priest has no say in PARISH assets as to using them or dispersing of them in a personal way. The bishop of the diocese (financial committe) has the only right to dispearse or allocate parish assets. Estebob meant personal assets I am sure.

priests voluntarily take the vow of celibacy before becoming priests. They know what they are geting into before they do it. There are many priests in the church who are married.

Correct-nor did he in the middle ages or any other time which is why the claim that celibacy was imposed for inheritance reasons has no basis in fact.

Mutilation is a sin. It is the consistent teaching of the Church that Jesus was exercising the literary device of hyperbole in these statements.

One of the reasons that Peter Abelard could never be a priest is that following his unfortunate escapade with the lovely Heloise, her relatives “wrought horrible vengeance upon the part that had committed the offense.” Up until recently, a man had to have Catholic priest had to have all of his body parts in working order; that means he had to be (ahem) intact.
