I’m a Catholic. I understand why they are in the this discussion…because it is a puzzle to them and most of them are Christians.

I’m beginning to question the whole thing myself as a matter of fact.
hmm… why, exactly?? Please elaborate…

i don’t understand what you are saying here.
Apparently we are supposed to follow the exact same discipline of the Church at all times, regardless of changes in society.

(This reminds me of a story about a woman who had an interior designer redo her home. As a finishing touch, he added some fresh flowers to the mantle. She later complained to him that although she loved the new design, it was extremely expensive to maintain. When he investigated further, he found out that she was keeping the same kind of flowers on the mantle throughout the entire year, even when they were out of season, meaning that she had to have them specially grown in a hot-house for her. He had to explain to her, “No, no. You are allowed to have any kind of flowers and any kind of decoration in that spot - it is not necessary to have the exact same kind at all times.”)

“description of the marriage of Jesus”? 'Scuse me, but do you mean Cana?
Sorry for butting in, but Cana could not have been Jesus’ wedding for one simple reason:
  1. On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.
  • John 2:1-2
Who gets “invited” to his own wedding?

This kind of stuff is bible 101. jblake has not “studied the New Testament”.

Paul

You would be suprised how many people in CAF would disagree with you.
No, actually, at this point, I don’t thikn anything said on these forums would surprise me…

the weird thing is… I have been surprised by what** I** have said… :whacky:

Well, that’s not entirely accurate… I have been surprised more by HOW i said it…

In other words, when pepole have been rude to me, i have often been rude in return… :hmmm:

I didn’t think that was “me”… to be like that… but i guess all that rude-ness got to me… :hmmm:

St. John the Evangelist was single. Jesus clearly did not see being single as a bar.

Dream on. You REALLY do not see the inconsistency in your view, do you?
The Lord Jesus picked both married and single men as His disciples.

ME?😛 Which reminds me of an interesting story. My BILs wanted to handcuff me to something, I can’t remember, right before the wedding. Being that I was a hard core soldier at the time and warned them about no knowing how I’d react, violently, they left me alone. Smart move.👍
Sorry, off topic. I just couldn’t help but introduce comic relief. I’ll keep my day job.

I know. But the poster said “Jesus’ wedding” and the idea was so off the wall (and he has not yet responded to my question) that I felt clarification was required.

I’ve heard something about Byzantines Priests beings married. Is this true, and if it is, how can it be?
  • The celibate priesthood is not a dogma of the church, but rather a mere practice that developed over the years for practical reasons. Therefore, it is not an absolute that priests be celibate.
  • In the Roman Catholic Church the rule of celibacy is generally the norm, as it has been for hundreds of years. (There are some Anglican Clergy converts who are married priests.)
  • In the Eastern Churches, married clergy has always been the norm.
  • In the Eastern Churches, the individual must be married before they become a priest. If their spouses die, they cannot remarry. Bishops and monks are always celibate.
  • In North America, there is no married priesthood. Currently, married men must petition Rome for special permission to become a priest. In the future, this will likely change, as the Byzantine Church tries to return to the original traditions.

Are you suggesting that humans know better that the Lord Jesus, the Son of God who in His perfect in wisdom picked a married man (Peter) to be a disciple? Are you suggesting that the Lord Jesus made a mistake, that He should have only picked single men?
This is the post to which I responded when I stated that John the Evangelist was not married.

I stand by my observation that, given the selection of St. John as an Apostle, to accuse the Church of contravening Our Lord lacks precision of thought. Selecting bishops only from those men who espouse the model of Christ Himself is not only good and reasonable but as St. John and St. Paul witness, is also consistent with Scripture.

The way I understand it, if was after the apostles that they are no longer able to marry. But remember this is only Roman Catholic, so you dont want to get confused. It all goes back to serving Christ and Christ only.

wht is BILs?

was it some kind of prank or something??
Yes. A very stupid one.

There are people out there who think it’s a form of comedy to prevent the groom from getting to his own wedding. (I don’t think they have any idea of the expense and trouble it takes to reschedule a wedding, not to mention the hurt feelings of the bride and groom.)

I have heard of young men being got so drunk at their bachelor party they didn’t know where they were, and then being put on a bus to some place thousands of miles away. Obviously, their weddings never took place.

I would like to know if you think priests should be allowed to marry and still stay in the priesthood… If so, Why or why not??
Priests are married. They’re married to the Catholic Church.

In regards to celibacy, I believe it is a good discipline, because it allows the Priest to dedicate himself entirely to Jesus Christ.
