Do you think priests should be allowed to marry?

I never knew how strong my sexuality was until i tried to subdue it… through being celibate for years and years!!! It has a ^%#@) mind of its own…

Then he said this:

*3. You seem to be confused…you stated that you didn’t know how difficult it was to subdue your sexual urges. *

You then replied to Veritashunter that you never said that.

No, you didn’t say it in exactly those words but it was not an unreasonable assumption on his part because of your statement and especially,
I (more/less) agree… However, what is confusing about what i said?? I am disagreeing. mostly, with him saying i am confused… I am NOT confused about celibacy… or being chaste. And i didn’t understand the implication that somehow i am… If there is one thing in life i am not condused about it is the Church’s teachings on sexuality… & my adherence thereto…
And also…(incidentally) i would like to make the statement that only those who have been celibate for over, say, 5 years, can really know how difficilt it can be to live by these Church teachings 100% every day… :whacky: :ouch:

When i asked in another Thread about people being celibate for a long time, very few people answered… which doesn’t surpirse me in this day and age…
seem to rather occupied with your celibacy right now. After all, you are on a forum talking about it, making frequent mention of it, etc.
SO??
sometimes when people answer you, you take it very personally,
Guilty as charged… The defense rests…

and you wanna know soemthign really weird??

I’m not the only one on this forum you could say that about… Not even…

well, who taught you?? Just wondering…
But i dont want to fight or argue with you distracted i know thats not what God wants, so i will just bow our gracefully now. God Bless

i didn’t quite understand your whole message, but as to this last thing:

I appreciate your apparent effort to be truly Christian… about all this… I mean, some people on these forums just make one… “biting” comment after another…

anyway, i am sorry if i used the “wrong” words… I probably do that more often than i care to admit… sometimes i am just pressed for time… & don’t have time to put things in the best wrods…

I am human… :crying: :banghead: :whacky:

God bless…

I think it is time to take a serious look at a married clergy. It is only in the Latin rite of the Church that celibacy is required for priests. The Council of Trent made it clear that celibacy is a man made rule. .
Huh?? The council of Trent made a statement that celibacy is “man made rule”???

I dont’ understand that… Could you provide a source??

Actually, as stated in another post… I am beginning to understand better why the last 2 popes havent granted dispensations for priests to be married… (though it is a long story why i say this…).

My only remaining question is: What if a man were to tell his bishop that he felt called by God to marry a particular woman? Would the bishop just say You are out of your mind… get a psychiatrist, the Church will pay for it?? or whatever…

i think it is possible for a person to be called out of one vocation andi nto another…

huh? What? What post you referring to?
Let’s see…someone said something you disagreed with. I told that poster I agreed with it.

You saw my reply to that poster and posted to me saying:

and that’s all that’s matters, huh? subjective truth?

Then I asked if why if I believe it, it’s subjective and,
if you don’t, it’s not?

Then you asked, what I meant…and…oh well, I think you can get it from here…

I believe many of us said in answer to your original question: “No”. Nobody said it wasn’t hard.

SO??
Did you read from this point? In the very next paragraph I said:

Distracted, I am not saying this as if to suggest there is something wrong with your doing this. There isn’t. I am just saying that sometimes when people answer you, you take it very personally, your cynical side jumps out and you say, “you don’t read, comprehend, I didn’t say that”…when in essence you did. I’m not trying to make a personal attack here, I just think it makes for some confusion when people try to discuss things with you.

I meant because you have talked about it so much and so frequently it was not totally out of the ballpark for the poster to think maybe there was some confusion there. I don’t think he meant it as an attack. Thus, my statement that sometimes it is difficult to discuss things with you because you misinterpret things people say and then you say they misinterpreted you…and… Well, maybe if you could just give us the teensiest little bit of the benefit of the doubt that it was simply a misunderstanding. 🤷

i think it is possible for a person to be called out of one vocation andi nto another…
You may very possibly be right…God works in mysterious ways. But if the vocation changes from being a priest to the sacrament of marriage, he would have to be relieved of his pastoral duties.

i know that and my point was that the last 2 popes (from waht i have heard) did not grant any dispensations for any priests to do that… Is this correct?

Anyway… if they didn’t, i have a tendency to disagree with that… although i disagree less vehemently than i did when i first got to thinking about all this… I have learned a lot in the last few days… God has revealed things to me… Kind of a long story… i dont’ have time to go into right now… but maybe the popes were totally right…

hard to believe that I may have been “wrong”… but… now that i think about it, it has happened a couple times before… 😃

why is it subjective truth if I believe but it’s truth if you don’t?
you said “that makes perfect sense to me”… when you say something makes sense “to me” you are speaking according to your reality, your ability to say what is true and what is not…

that is what all of us is doing here, more or less. but there are objective truths that cannot be changed no matter how much we want to believe them… Yes, i know you know this… but anywya, i was making the point that we cannot accept subjective opinions, whether they are yours or mine… (& it was more interesting focusing on YOUR subjective opinion… because my “subjective” opinion on the matter just happens to be the truth… 😃

I don’t know right off the top of my head…you know more about that than me. I do know that when I converted years and years ago (John Paul II pontificate) the priest who baptised me was released from his “priestly duties”. It is many years later now and I happen to find out that he came back. Don’t know how long he was gone. Is that different than being laicized???

Dear Distracted:

It is very easy to read things into what others are writing when theyare responding to someone elses post. After all, just the very words used may be misinterpreted by the other party or their interpretation of them.

And with a topic such as we are discussing it can be even more distressing should one think that the comments are being personalized toward them.

We are all subject to such misunderstandings. We are also all subject to the same trails and temptations related to a chaste life and celibacy.

So, whatever is said in any post from before now or later please don’t feel alone in your struggles and strengths. We are all right there with you day after day.

Some days it is so very easy and others more difficult. But, please do not feel singled out or localized. As I said before…we Christians (men and women alike) are all going through the same trials and tests, failures and successes.

None of us should feel singled out…rather, we should seek to support each other in overcoming whatever tempts or tortures us (in small or large part). And, as with all things, practice makes perfect.

To your continued success.

Yours in Chirst,

Veritashunter

Hmm… i guess he could have been released for some reason other than marriage… but never heard of that… (as if i should have heard about it because i have heard of everything “Catholic” ) But anyway… is there any way you could find out if he left for marriage or not? Actually now that i think about it, i know of a priest who left to get married, then his wife died and he returned to the priesthood. However, i don’t know if he did that during JP II s reign or not… (do they still call it a reign?? :hmmm: )… but i think he must have been during JP II… seeing as how he was pope so long…

I’m not positive but I think the proper term is “pontificate”.

Actually I didn’t mention this earlier but I had originally heard that he was marrying, but when I asked someone recently they said, he had problems with alcohol.

So who knows…sometimes it’s just gossip. My personal feelings are that he was a really nice guy and I am glad he worked out whatever it was and is back with the Church. Had he not returned I would not have thought less of him, though.

I do know the Church does not do things in a hurry, which is good. I’m sure it is intentionally a long process, as is becoming a priest, and I think that’s as it should be considering the serious nature of it.

As far as a priest leaving and comming back, i do know of one who was a very good priest and then left for awhile. The reason was never revealed, and i feel is none of anyones business, anyway his reasons were never told, but i do know that priests are human. maybe they just get burnt out too, and just need a break, to pray renew their faith with God. But anyway he did come back in a few years to another Church and is doing excellent. I am sure many priests like all of us wonder if they are doing the right thing, or have doubts at times, and need some time to be alone and think things through. Just like many married people, how many marriages do you know that after the kids grow up out of the blue they want out. I think its just part of age, and stress of everyday life. Priest are as human as the rest of us, They just have the Grace that God has given them to do his work. I have never heard of a priest leaving getting married, then his wife die and come back to the RCC. But im not saying it hasnt been done. But i guess think about it, if a man is married and his spouse dies, there is nothing wrong in the eyes of God to remarry. So this doesnt sound unreasonable. I have just never heard of it. But i do know priests have alot of stress, they have everyones problems all the time, and people want them to fix everything, and they cant. I could only imagine the stress they have day to day. they are bound to need a break sooner or later. But i think like anything else for some getting away alone, and in constant prayer brings them back.

right… and now i am beginnign to understand more why the popes are not in a hurry to grant dispensatios… it is that “serious nature of” the matter…

I am at bout 99% in agreement with the popes, which is a change from about a week or so ago… I just believe that in some rare situations, a prist may be called to change his vocation to marrirage… and in that rare case, he should be allowed to. I am sure the Vatican has ways of discerning whether something (a calling like that) is from God or not… ??

I would think that they probably have the priest talk with his spiritual director and who knows, maybe they even provide a counselor. I’m sure they want the priest to discern this for a long time just as he did before he became a priest as it is such a huge step. I’m sure they help all they can and I bet they do not pressure either way. After all, they want their priests to be there fully, not half-heartedly out of guilt. I want to add that this is just my guess, I don’t know for sure. :o
