Do you think that saint Paul was charismatic or Evangelical

Paul was among those who were the first evangelists. He was definitely a sort of evangelist and apostle, but he was not charismatic in the sense that we may think if your referring to Pentecostal beliefs. Anyone who is strong about their faith is charismatic I guess you could say, because we all possess certain charisms of the Spirit. I grew up Pentecostal, and while it is usually a very strong faith (among earlier generations), Paul was not that kind of charismatic. If I’m understanding correctly, your talking about charismatic as in dynamic speaking and tongues right? Because if so, no I would not say. Although Paul did say he spoke in demonstration of the Spirit and not in man’s wisdom, he meant more so that the Spirit gave him utterance in preaching. Also, Paul was not that kind of charismatic because he even said that tongues were not as important as charity and that charity should be first, and even prophesy. The charismatic world focuses more on tongues, not saying it’s bad, but some tend to focus more on tongues then living Holy. Keep in mind, I’m not saying charismatic movement wasn’t of God, but some have changed what it’s meant to be. He was Apostolic 🙂 (pun sorta intended) Just my two cents 🙂

No.
Considering that he helped establish the Roman Church and the Antiochian Church, both of which historically have been very liturgical from the beginning, I would think not.

Although I’m of the opinion that the Charismatic movement is from hell; it substitutes an authentic encounter with God for physical and emotionalistic pleasure.

Like i said above, I can understand we walk circumspectly concerning spiritual movements. But you must be careful. The charismatic movement when people recognized certain gifts. Now do I agree with the way people have made it? No. Tongues should be more in order, but we must also recognized that the Church even recognized it as a movement of the Spirit. PAX, and I would love to continue, this topic interest me., but be very careful. With love my fellow friend in Christ 🙂

Depends on the “Tongues”

Are they babbling nonsense that nobody can understand, in order to show off how holy they are, or are they legitimately able to speak in other languages?

There was a Pentecostal who went to Mount Athos one day, and the Pentecostal showed off how holy he was because “the Holy Spirit” let him speak in tongues. The monk in response said “Really then? I have a Greek, a Russian, a Japanese, a Hebrew, and a Polish monk, and I’ll bring them here so you can talk to them all.”

The Pentecostal responded “no, that’s not how tongues work…”

The Monk responded “Are you sure? That’s how the Apostles used their gift on Pentecost. What holy use is it if you are just babbling nonsense that nobody can understand?”

And the Pentecostal was eventually converted to Orthodoxy.

Here’s the thing. I greatly agree that tongues are extremely misunderstood these days. The tongues in Acts were as you said, for foreign peoples. However, I do believe there is a personal spiritual language for personal edification which is for private prayer or MUST be interpretes if before the Church. If you can’t interpret, then there’s no point. However we cannot forbid to speak in tongues. When I was little, lots of people spoke in tongues around me. While I’m not sure about the validity (I don’t judge before the time), I do know that it must be in order, not with confusion. I once even went to a youth conference where a woman was preaching and she literally told people to turn on their tongues… I was greatly hurt by this. So I understand peoples anger with how it’s used these days, we just have to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bathe water. I have also encountered people who say if you speak in tongues then your saved… I wish people would just accept more truth

St. Paul is a character!

If you mean evangelic as in getting a reward for carrying a message, the Gift is the reward, the crown – so maybe.

If you mean charismatic because of his Charism and gifts, we’ll he was knocked off his horse, blinded, learned first hand for years, was being rejected but then accepted, argued with St. Peter.

May I ask how “speaking in tongues” is beneficial for one’s spiritual life?

I know that in my experience God has definitely talked to me via the so called “Invisible Voice,” where - in a very mysterious way that I cannot explain - not using words, but simply “vibrating my soul” God will tell me something or work through other people to tell me something.

My biggest thing with tongues is that it is an end that is sought after - people only want to seek after God not for the experience of God, but because you can “learn” how to speak a mysterious language. If these are your priorities, you are a roasting stick open for the devil’s delusion.

Here’s the thing - if you ONLY pray to God just so you can expect an apparition of the Virgin Mary, the Devil will eventually appear to you as the Virgin Mary. That’s just how it works, and I wonder for people who strive so much for the experience of tongues, if they are victim to the demonic powers at hand.

Sit in front of some Sacred Art, empty your mind completely, light a candle, and just talk to God, asking Him for mercy. Don’t make it a “skill” that you have to learn - yes, prayer is a task, but it shouldn’t be for the manifestation of some external stimuli, but for the Experience of God.

I enjoyed your reply greatly. I agree. Teaching someone to speak in tongues is garbage. It’s the Holy Spirit who manifests is in you and no other. People who strive falsely will get false Apparitions and feelings, so we agree largely on that. Your thoughts on 1 Corinthians chapter 14?

May I ask: how does praying in tongues improve your spiritual life?

doesn’t really matter if he was charismatic or evangelical (though there is no proof of he being either one of them)… like all the apostles he was filled with the Holy Spirit and preached Christ… end of the day he was Catholic and thats what matters 😃 and there is sufficient proof of that 😛

Which is why he rebuked Peter, telling him to get his stuff together 😏

Martin Luther and Thomas Krammer also told one how to connect with God using Sola Scriptura as well…should we listen to their wisdom?
What about the Gnostic texts?

That is called fraternal correction done in charity… It was done by St Paul in the right spirit and therefore St Peter also accepted the fraternal correction… A man who is proud and egoistic would have never accepted it… in short both St Peter and St Paul were filled with the Holy Spirit 😏

No, I think he was a first century Jew, trained in his youth according to the teachings of the Pharisees, who came to believe in Jesus and focused upon missionary outreach to Gentiles.

He should be understood within the context of Second Temple Judaism and Early Christianity.
