Do you think that this Cathedral is ugly?

I think it is really nice !!! (golly gee, and I’m a neo-lefeb lol )👍

It doesn’t look any different from any 1970’s parish in Omaha or Chicago. It is good that they have real bells in the tower, although they do not swing and are dead-hung, which results in a lower volume and a mechanical sound when the hammers strike them. Still, they are not electronic. Also, it is a nicer cathedral than the one in Lincoln, Nebraska. Now that is ugly. I’m sure it pains Bishop Bruskewitz to have to use it.

Andrewcarey, why don’t you download Microsoft’s free PowerPoint viewer?

As for the original question, no, its not ugly. Kind of interesting, but not soul-stirring as cathedral should be, IMHO.

It wouldn’t suprise me if he schedules a major remodeling in the future. Those irregular splotches of stained glass, it makes the walls look like swiss cheese. Very distracting if you ask me…:whacky:

That wall made me think of a “food fight”.

Its no Notre Dame but its also no Taj Mahony. It’s alright. Looks kinda like a building you would see on an away team mission on classic Star Trek… which is probably a bad thing.

I wouldnt call it ugly but I think it is quite a stretch to call it a Cathedral.

You call THAT a Cathedra! I have nicer chairs in my kitchen!Honestly, modesty is one thing but the bishop’s chair is a rather important symbol, and THAT does not fit the bill.

also, the processional cross is just too common. It woudl work in a parish but this is the cathedral! something more would be nice.

as for the building itself, its pretty dang ugly, but as someone said, its modern…

Its a bit to bright. Churches should be well lit, but they should also be such that they will both be capapble of dimmer lighting, and not look ugly when the lights are low. this place looks like it is neither.

The “happy friends” holy family statues, blech! (but thats just a personal taste in art thing)

I also like they they were unafraid to put crucifixes up in more than just the required places.

Nice Baptrisry though, and I really like the Altar.

I also like the use of traditional metal doors (but they had better keep the copper from corroding), very worthy.

Tabernacle looks good and prominent, and its better than Seattle’s bronze flame… thing

so hideous building, some ugly furnishings, but also several redeeming qualities.
I don’t think the outside is that bad, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I think it looks good. The cathedra, however, is beyond hideous for its function.

No thumbs up even for Sagrada Familia? What a great story for Antoni Gaudi though! He personally raised all the money himself, fought to make sure it was built, and even slept in the basement while it was under construction so he could be present round-the-clock! All to show his devotion to God! 👍

Here are some more fantastic pictures of it!

Here are images of the facade and high altar of the Anglican Cathedral of St. Mark in Portland, Oregon. They separated several years ago from the Episcopal Church for the usual reasons. They wanted to become Anglican-use Catholics also, but the Archdiocese thought otherwise. It’s a shame that such a magnificent church remains outside Catholicism because of errant ideologies, but that’s the Church in the Pacific Northwest for you.

I saw a picture of a ‘crucifix’ on this forum once but for the life of me I can’t find it anymore…it was the most horrid think I’ve ever seen in my life. It was a ‘crystal’ triangle ‘thing’ that I think was supposed to be a cross with Jesus somehow popping out of its center. It looked like a cruise ship ice sculpture gone bad. I wish I could find it again - perhaps my memory of it is worse than it really is, but I remember looking at it and going !!!
No, your memory of it is EXACTLY the way it was. I remember it to. It was aweful. Someone here posted it before the great forum crash because she liked it and was disappointed when no one else did. I thought the Church it was in was in Palastine Illinois? I just spent a lot of time looking for it and it’s driving me crazy! Anyway, the wording on their website, they seemed to promote eucemenicalism. I had no problem finding it once before when I remembered one particular word, which now I can’t remember what that word was? Ecumenical? Evangelical? I could have sworn the word started with an “E” and googling that word with “Catholic Church” It would come up right on top.

Let me know if you find it.
