Do you think the Christ will return before the sun eventually destroys the earth?

I understand that the sun is a star which contains or is made up of helium and hydrogen (wikipedia), and that its full of vast amounts of energy. And that when it starts to die it will start to expand so much that the inner planets will be completely obliterated.

So do you think judgement or the “end of time” will occur before the sun expands so much that the earth will be completely destroyed?

Or will that event be the end of time for the human race? Is there another event that is predicted to cause the end of human life before the sun does such as an ice age?

I lie awake worrying about a lot of things, but this is not one of them.

“…Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come…”

Mark 13:31-33

Well, in the absence of any data, I don’t have anything to form an opinion on.

I’m fairly sure, however, that I will probably die within half a century, perhaps much sooner, and I will have to report to Him for judgment then. So I am not too concerned with whether Christ’s Second Coming takes a billion years longer than that.

It is understood in Catholic teaching that the world ends because of a near total irrevocable apostasy. Hence, to believe that the world ends simply because of an accidental physical evil is opposed to Catholic doctrine.

It is only when God can draw no further spiritual good from human history that he brings the end of human history. And were he not to intervene, the world would end of its own volition, for the near whole of Gentiles, being in irrevocable rejection of God and His Truth, would martyr the remnant of faithful Catholics into extinction, and then they would destroy themselves.

But, “for the sake of the elect, those days shall be shortened.”

I can’t help but look around and wonder if we are fast approaching that time. This article by Peter Kreeft really drives the current state of society home.

We are told there will be a new heaven and a new earth. Whether this promise can or will be done using the laws of physics/quantum mechanics is beyond me. Maybe a new universe is what God has in mind? or an already existing parallel one?

Thanks for the link to the Peter Kreeft article. After reading that, it’s apparent that there is no way our civilization can last till the Sun reaches the red giant stage.

I frequently hear comments that things are no worse now than they were in the past. Not true.

well, no, this is not the final darkness, for it is the seventh great one. But Christ returns not on the old sabbath, but on the New Sabbath the eighth day. Hence, what we now await is a chastisement that reunites Christians and restores the Catholic faith in all but the Jews.

So that only after the coming age of peace, shall there occur the final darkness, the great apostasy.

At least, that is the best guess from the analysis of the fully approved Private Revelations.

See EWTN:
Approved Catholic mystics (Venerables, Blessed and Saints, approved apparitions) throw considerable light on this order, by prophesying a minor apostasy and tribulation toward the end of the world, after which will occur the reunion of Christians. Only later will the entire world fall away from Christ (the great apostasy) and the personal Antichrist arise and the Tribulation of the End occur.
End Times

Blessings!

Absolutely. The “things have always been the same” is utter BS.

As the second Millennium dawned, there were those who assaulted Peter, but retained everything else. Later, they cast aside not only Peter, but all the bishops, and hence the Oral Trad. But they retained Christ and the Scriptures.

Still later they attack even the Scriptures, and retain only reason.

And now, they no longer even listen to reason, nor have they any esteem for religion in any form.

God who created the universe, can stop nature or the cycle of the sun. He made it and he can make the sun live on.

Is there reason to believe in such a return? Did this Christ ever say he’s coming back? And for that matter, why did he ever have to leave in the first place?

We’ve discovered other solar systems like our own. There’s nothing particularly important about our planet, our home, except of course what we make of it. I think that is the more important issue, religiously and otherwise.

I would recommend Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis, which is actually a sci-fi story, but it speaks very strongly about humans and a sort of manifest destiny to the universe.

Personally, I don’t care, though if I were forced to take a bet, I would go with Jesus coming back before the sun destroying the earth. It’s just that the sun getting old in any sense is at least millions, if not a billion or more, years away.

I don’t know we are going to be able to leave this Earth for another planet. . .I think we are stuck here, bound by the laws of physics. Still never say never. . .it would mean several generations replacing us, even if we were traveling at the speed of light.

Maybe wormholes can do it but that is just theorectical.

That being said, the Earth would be quite inhabitable before the Sun swallowed the Earth up. . .just a a little solar expansion and conditions would deteriorate quick.

Things will be way different anyway by the time that happens.

Our moon is slowly orbiting away from us further and I believe it is predicted that it could swing out of our orbit. No more tides. . .I watched the show “Life After People” and it was really interesting to see what little will endure and how transient our presence on this Earth is.

Not only does it appear each human is finite. . .it does seem that humanity is finite.

I know what one poster said - there seems like there should be bigger things to worry about but for some reason my mind is drawn to the stars and future. It’s like I want to skip to the end of a good book and know how it will all end for us.

Far from being no worse than in the past, we are in many ways far better off than our predecessors. So why the incessant complaining ? 🙂

As to the Return of Christ - I don’t know. It’s already been nearly 2,000 years. Maybe He didn’t know - in fact, He said “the Son of Man” did not. St.Paul seems to hace thought the Return of Christ was near; James did, as did John. It’s a pretty safe guess that we will be in our graves & turned to dust long before the Second Coming.

I don’t think it makes any practical difference whether He comes in ten minutes, or after ten thousand million millenia, or not at all. What matters is how we behave.

Kreeft makes the point in the first paragraph of the linked article that the 20th century may well be remembered as “The Century of Genocide,” more killing than ever in history, indicating that “we are now living in the real Dark Ages.” (We can only hope that the 21st century will be an improvement.)
He also makes the point that modern civilization is unique in a different sort of way:
Toynbee distinguished 21 great civilizations in human history, of which ours is the latest. Every one of them admitted the Tao, objective moral truths. Ours is the first civilization to deny the Tao. The most radically new feature of our civilization is not technology, its newly powerful means, but the lack of an end, a summum bonum. We are the first civilization that does not know why we exist.

Still, if one reads to the end, he does give some reasons for hope.

According to wikipedia (and other sources)… the sun will burn up into a Venus-like environment (this will occur in about one billion years) the Earth before it expands into a red giant (after the hydrogen in its core is burned) thus consuming the Earth.

In a 100 years we have come from first flight to landing on the moon and probably Mars in the next 20 years so it seems pretty obvious to me that the human race will have spread to other parts of the universe (hence spreading the faith) in the coming millions of years never mind billions.

However, what difference does it make anyway? Christ told us we do not know the hour and the day so we should always be ready.
