What’s everyone’s opinion on the Luminous mysteries from a traditional point of view?

I’m just curious because the luminous mysteries are great and I used to say them in my daily rotation throughout the week. However lately the classic Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious rotation seems to work best for me.

I’ve never used them and couldn’t even tell you what they are.

I was raised in the old church and that’s the way I follow - 15 mysteries and not 20. Plus, Pope John Paul II did say they were optional. So, I opted not to use them. 🙂

The Rosary is not something I pray regularly, but when I do, I love to pray with the Luminous mysteries and I love their addition. Meditating on the life of Christ while honoring His mother- St. JPII was a genius!! 😃

I didn’t use the Luminous mysteries for a very long time. When I first started praying the rosary regularly, in high school, I would use the sheet for praying the rosary from New Advent, which had scriptural readings for all the mysteries. I think then I did use the Luminous mysteries when they occurred, on Thursdays. For a while when I got to college, I only prayed the Sorrowful mysteries out of what I recognize now to be a sort of misplaced piety. Somewhere about halfway through college I prayed the Joyful and Glorious ones as well, and on the traditional cycle of days. In seminary, I came to appreciate the Luminous mysteries–especially the Transfiguration, which is my baptismal anniversary, and the Last Supper, because of the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood. So they’ve become more special to me in recent years.

See that’s how I feel, both ways. Guess its a split for me.

I’m not quite old enough to remember the pre-Vatican II Latin Mass, but I do include the Luminous Mysteries in my rotation. That said, I prefer the traditional Stations of the Cross.

Yes the part of the Luminous that really jump out when I use them is the Last Supper. So important and special a moment in the life our Lord. Its the aspect of those mysteries I reflect on most strongly.

From a traditionalist point of view? :ehh:

I think everyone prays the rosary more or less the same way.
The entirety of the Mysteries take us through the life of Christ, while adding in particularly blessed moments in Our Lady’s life.
So yeah, the Luminous were the missing parts and a very welcome addition.
Love them, in fact, almost prefer them. My birthday is the Feast of the Annunciation, so I really gravitate toward the Joyful as well.

I like to pray the Luminous mysteries because they focus other important areas of Jesus’ ministry. I think their addition to the more traditional rosary is really inspired by the Holy Spirit. 👍

My feelings as well.

I agree and love the Luminous Mysteries as they add so much to my meditation on Our Lords life. They were given to us by Pope Benedict through the guidance of the Holy Spirit to make the rosary more meaningful for us. We can even use our own Mysteries to meditate on also for private use. God Bless, Memaw

Tiny edit:
It was Saint John Paul II.
God bless, Memaw. 😉
Right, thanks for the correction! It doesn’t seem like that long ago. I’ve lived through so many Popes, I can remember Pope Pius XII. God Bless, Memaw

I don’t pray them. Pope Saint John Paul II did not need to “fix” what was already perfect.

Oh please.

Why is it that people are all about obeying past Popes except when they simply disagree.
He didn’t “fix” anything. The Rosary, as a devotion doesn’t break.
He simply took them to a logical (and inspired) completion as a meditation on the life of Christ. After all, that is ultimately what Our Lady desires. For us to grow in her Son.
Having said that, don’t pray them if you don’t want to. But it would be a shame to refuse to meditate on the public ministry of Christ during the rosary. I can’t think of one good or holy outcome in that.
But hey, do what you want. 🤷

I don’t have a problem with them - the Rosary and other similar chaplets have had tons of malleability for the faithful to take advantage of in their own personal spiritual lives. I will very occasionally pray them when I want to add some extra decades to my day.

However, by and large I don’t. In Our Lady’s apparitions she always encourages the traditional fifteen decades, and it was originally mean to be a option for laity who could not or did not pray the Divine Office - 150 Psalms, 150 Aves. Plus I really like the Joyful-Sorrowful-Glorious-Joyful-Sorrowful-Glorious cycle traditionally used Monday-Saturday, with the Sunday mysteries depending on the season. The more modern placement of the Luminous Mysteries on Thursdays feels shoehorned to me and kinda throws off the routine, which I enjoy.

I guess in conclusion, the Luminous Mysteries are great but to me they’re more of a devotional meditative chaplet in the same vein as the Seraphic Rosary or the Seven Sorrows Chaplet, and I only pray them occasionally and rarely in place of the other fifteen mysteries.

The use of the luminous mysteries is optional. That it seems to have been made mandatory doesn’t make it so.

If I misread the pope’s encyclical, you will no doubt set me straight. 🙂

No, I simply find it amusing that people seem to believe that the addition of the remainder of the public ministry of Christ is somehow tainted or disloyal to Our Lady.
I rather think she is quite pleased with the addition. 😉
And I really don’t recall Our Lady ever saying "no not THOSE mysteries! These ones! "
LOL

She always says “pray the rosary”.
So we should.

To the OP, this is what happens when someone answers a question sincerely.

To Clare, if your remarks in your posts are referring to my response to the question asked, what did I post that led you to write: “I simply find it amusing that people seem to believe that the addition of the remainder of the public ministry of Christ is somehow tainted or disloyal to Our Lady.”
