Only time I have worn jeans is to daily mass on the day may son’s school has mass. Never jeans on Sunday.

Peace,
DS
I try to go to Daily mass so yes I occasionally attend in jeans-especially if I am ging Hiking that day and leavng directly after Mass. never on a Sunday though.

I understand your reasoning behind wearing jeans, I really do.
However, I am curious…many people have written that they wear jeans to daily mass and not to Sunday mass.
Question: How is daily mass any less special than sunday mass? I do not view the mass to be more important on sundays due to the fact that more people are there, there is a choir, it is in the “big” church vs. the chapel, etc…(Nor am I saying that any of you feel that way, again, this is my view.)

To me, the importance of mass lies in the Eucharist and the celebration of Christ freely giving himself to suffer and die for our sins. This rite is celebrated at every mass, be it daily or a Sunday mass. Therefore, I view every mass as important as the next. Thus, in feeling this way, I will always wear clothing that I feels reflects this. In my mind, jeans are not on that list.🙂

Somebody told me they saw this thread and told me they Iron their jeans. They dont want to be on record for this though but told me it would be okay to mention it in the thread.

Just thought I would add that since 1) never heard of anyone doing that before 2) it seems that that person is really taking the time to look presentable.

Just letting you know.

Sounds good to me. They are making an effort many people don’t bother with.

It seems that you may have reared differently, more formally perhaps. Did your family “dress for dinner”? Your family may have different standards for this than others.
I wasn’t left in the forest to be raised by wolves, or left in the barnyard to entertain myself, if that’s what you mean. I think my upbringing was quite normal; everyone else that I know dresses up on Sundays.

We also went to the drive-in on Saturday nights, and went to A&W for burgers afterwards, and did lots of hiking in the summer time, and of course we wore jeans for that - they’re the only kind of slacks that the mosquitoes can’t bite through. 😃

I supect that a lot of people are like me-they leave home and go to Mass and then go on about their days work-if that work involves wearing jeans then i end up wearing jeans at Mass. Lets say I am going hiking-I go to Church in Jeans and leave straight for the hike. Would I better off skipping Mass if i dont have time to go home and change?

I have an Aunt that has perfect creases in her jeans. She iron’s them. I will iron mine as well, but avoid the crease. But it does make them more presentable. And one can dress up jeans…with a nice shirt/blouse for the ladies and a blazor with good shoes.

I remember preVII days quite well, I was in my teens…in the Philiphines very hot no AC and dressed to the nines, with headcovers and all. It was no sweat! To this day I wear my Sunday best because it’s the right thing to do. Not to make a fashion statement.

I posted the first response… but i’ve come to see the error of my ways after reading these thoughtful posts!

so, let me expand on the thoughts here…
what i can gather from this thread is that cotton, woven into black thread sewn into a chino or slack is fine. cotton woven but in a slightly lower thread count, dyed blue into denim is a faux pas?
regardless if they cover the same amount of skin and/or are well pressed, there are those that consider cotton as demin innapropriate for Mass, but cotton woven into a slack as fine.
What about denim dyed black? i have a pair that looks exactly like black slacks, but because they are denim, would that make them acceptable to you. now if i dyed them dark blue instead of light blue, is that ok? or are we in aggrement that dark blue denim is wrong but black is ok. sometimes blue would be acceptable if its a weekday Mass, but never for Sunday, when black denim is innappropriate once again and we have to go back to the finer cotton. just making sure i have this right! so dark blue and black cotton for weekdays and black for weekends. cotton/poly slacks anytime and blue denim never. ok… i think i understand… ummm… wait, chrismyster has a thought… what about if the material is polyester/cotton dress slacks in a dark blue. IS THAT OK?? now they’re the same color as blue jeans, but i guess the different fabric makes the difference? yes? no? yes?

to summarize:
so if i get dress slacks the same color as blue jeans they are OK. but if i get blue jeans the color of slacks, they are not dressy enough. but if i get blue jeans in black that LOOK like slacks, that might be ok. but if i get blue jeans, they are not appropriate for Mass depending on the day of the week!?!?!?! of course, blue slacks and black slacks are ok at all times.

Do any of you see how absurd this discussion is? or is this post falling on slack loving/ denim hating deaf ears.

I do not wear jeans anymore. Now that I have a good job, I wear slacks and a dress shirt to mass. I do not wear a tie however. I don’t hold it against people who wear jeans because I don’t think God cares what we wear to Mass as long as we are not being disrespectful.

I know back in the day my grandpa would go to Mass and they only had 2 pairs of dress pants and shirts for the boys (during the Great Depression), so they would go to Mass twice. Their dad would take them once and their mom would take the rest of the kids so they had something to wear to Mass.

I know a gas jockey who would never wear anything other than a three piece suit to Mass. His stay-at-home wife wears a dress suit, and their children also dress very well for Church.

I don’t know how much he makes, but I doubt he’s “rich” by any sane definition of that term.

I thought the discussion was leaning more toward casual (jeans) versus non-casual (slacks). That and the ability to “dress up” for the Lord or choosing not to.

thats where i saw it going too… my post simply asks for a definition of terms as to slacks (denim or cotton) versus color (black thru blue) and it’s ramifications in relation to acceptablility by those who reject blue jeans. my post asks a simple, albeit long question… does our Lord favor denim in black over cotton slacks (chinos, for example) in denim colored blue?

it seems like a valid question in light of some of the more opinionated posts on this thread.

Your post gets me thinking. Since A/C did not exist 100 or so years ago, how did our ancestors handle it for 1900 years? There are definitely hotter places than LA in the world.

Back then men wore suits to go shopping. That was the style back then. If it became a fashion show then, it has become the exact opposite now.

Whatever is a person’s Sunday best gets my vote.
on the downside, they sweated, weren’t familiar with deodorant and smelled like a good day at the docks. i’d rather move past those olden days if possible. it’s not fashion, it’s style when discussing clothing preferences. what is considered fashion is not always stylish and vice versa.

A-.

I usually wear something on the order of business casual to mass on Sunday, although I have often worn jeans in the past. When it comes to daily mass, when I am lucky enough to make it, I will wear jeans or shorts or dress clothes depending upon what else is going on that day.

I have yet to read a post on here where someone says you have to wear this or that. I consider this thread a fun, non-serious thread. Sometimes its nice to take a break from serious questions about the GIRM or CCC.

I believe someone on here took offense to someone else when they stated that a lot of this depends on how one is raised. I did not consider that offensive at all, but a true sociological statemnet. I was raised where jeans are not considered dress or casual-dress. Someone else on here might have been raised differently. I do not think anyone thinks one idea is right and the other is wrong, just a difference of opinion.

In my circles, blue-jeans, black-jeans, red-jeans, whatever…have never been considered dress in any sense of the word. Again, we are entering the world of how one was raised (sociology) and that particular person’s culture (anthropology).
Your upbringing may have been different than mine, and that is not wrong, just different (unless you are baptist…sorry, just joking).
I have always been an advocate of casual-dress to church. Pants (not jeans), collared shirt, belt, and no tennis shoes. MHO!!!

Good for him…He gives glory to the Lord with great good intent.

On the other hand…my Uncle and Aunt had 16 children. Poor as church mice they were for sure. Clothing 16 kids on a seasonal carpenters job was no easy feat.

One Sunday, the priest berated my Uncle in front of the whole congregation, because the kids were wearing sandals. He shamed him so much that Uncle Red ceased to take his family to church. By Gods grace, Uncle Red returned to the church on his death bed and slowly but surely, all of the children have returned to the faith. But I don’t think God is nearly as unhappy with Uncle Red and his family for leaving, as the nasty, sanctimonious attitude of that priest.

I just think of jeans as being clothes you wear specifically to be casual. When there are “dress down” days at a workplace, people normally come in wearing jeans.

I don’t presume to know what God prefers. I just think that we need to dress respectfully and remember that we’re about to receive Jesus when we go to Mass. I’m sure God understands if people cannot afford clothes other than jeans.

and likewise, i will remember that the person at Mass in work dress slacks may not have the disposable income with which to buy a nice pair of jeans. 😉

Jeans these days vary in style and while some are very casual, some are daggy and some are quite dressy. There are some jeans that when worn with nice shoes, nice top and jacket plus some jewelry are VERY dressy. These are the sorts of jeans I keep for situations such as Mass, dinner out, party etc. Of course I also wear skirts but sometimes it’s just too cold!
Especially if one has to walk from the bus stop to get there.
After spending a winter in Canada using only public transport I soon learned that skirts are NOT practical all the time - unless you want frost-bitten knees in -25C conditions!

Oh, and by the way, I do wear jeans to work 95% of the time and thats because I am a nanny and spend my time caring for small children. As any stay at home mum will attest to, jeans are definately the most practical when dealing with kids. These are NOT the jeans I wear to Mass though - I keep the stained jeans from work at home.
