Do You Wear the Scapular?

I was enrolled in the brown scapular when I was baptized and entered the Church. I wore it until it became so frayed that it fell off, and I wasn’t able to repair it. I haven’t worn another one because I don’t pray the Rosary every day, which I think is a requirement. Maybe I’m wrong about it being a requirement. 🤷

Praying the Rosary every day is not a requirement to wear the Brown Scapular. I don’t pray the Rosary every day, and yet because I am a Lay Carmelite I wear the Brown Scapular continuously. You are probably thinking of the Sabbatine privilege, which states that Mary will release from Purgatory on the Saturday following their death those who observe the following conditions:
  1. Wear the Brown Scapular continuously.
  2. Observe chastity according to one’s state in life (married/single).
  3. Recite daily the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin OR Observe the fasts of the Church together with abstaining from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays OR With permission of a priest, say five decades of Our Lady’s Most Holy Rosary OR With permission of a priest, substitute some other good work.
However, the Holy See has stated that the decree establishing the Sabbatine privilege is unfounded:
Historical research has shown that the alleged fourteenth-century appearance of the Blessed Mother to Pope John XXII is without historical foundation. As a matter of fact, in the year 1613 the Holy See determined that the decree establishing the “Sabbatine Privilege” was unfounded and the Church admonished the Carmelite Order not to preach this doctrine. Unfortunately, the Order did not always comply with this directive of the Holy See.
At the time the Carmelites were instructed to stop mentioning the “Sabbatine Privilege” the Holy See acknowledged that the faithful may devoutly believe that the Blessed Virgin Mary by her continuous intercession, merciful prayers, merits, and special protection will assist the souls of deceased brothers and sisters and members of the confraternity, especially on Saturday, the day which the church dedicates to the Blessed Virgin.

Consistent with the Catholic tradition, such favors associated with the wearing of the Brown Scapular would be meaningless without the wearers living and dying in the state of grace, observing chastity according to their state in life, and living a life of prayer and penitence. The promises traditionally tied to the scapular offer us what the Second Vatican Council says about the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary: “By her maternal love, Mary cares for the brothers and sisters of her Son, who still make their earthly journey surrounded by dangers and difficulties, until they are led to their happy fatherland.”

Thanks so much for the good info! 🙂

I used to but since promise # 9 of the 15 promises for those faithfully praying to rosary is essentially the same thing, I discontinued the practice.

I have done this in other threads over the years, but here I am again sharing this catechesis of the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel put forth by both branches of the Carmelite Order in the year 2000.

It is lengthy, but it explains everything about the Brown Scapular we need to know and understand.

One of the items many do not know, is that the Brown Scapular does not have to be made of 100% wool.

No. I do the Miraculous Medal.

Do people that wear the brown scapular wear a leather strap, or is it also on a chain?

I wear mine when I’m not at work. Since I’m in construction, I don’t want it getting broken or dirty from sweat.
I have a question: are you supposed to wear it under a shirt so it is hidden? I have the impression that this is the proper method.

I started wearing the Brown Scapular when I became an OCDS (Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites).

One of our community apostolates is to give a presentation about contemplative prayer and hand out (enroll) youth in the Brown Scapular. My part is to bring back bags of scapulars from India, where I can buy them very cheaply during our yearly visiting of relatives there.

As far as I know it would not be a sin to wear over the clothes. As far as I know you can do either because the actual Carmelite habit is really big and goes over the clothes. But I think generally it’s just common practice to wear it under. But if I were you I’d get a second scapular and have it blessed and use it for work. I have one I wear 24/7 basically and then a different one I use for working out or taking a shower. Freebrownscapular.com gives them out for free.

You can instead wear a scapular medal with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel & baby Jesus on one side and with Jesus & Sacred Heart on the back. That’s what at least one of my OCDS community members does.

As it turns out I do both now, since I inherited my mother-in-law’s scapular medal; she was in India where one gets really hot and sweaty.

I remember one time when I went to Mass late, I was a bit worried that my scapular might be showing out (I later checked and it wasn’t). I didn’t want my remiss behavior to reflect badly on Carmelites. 🙂

I never saw a leather strap on the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Just cords - the sometimes inconvenience of it reminds me why I am wearing it! 🙂

The filmsy string-cords of my scapulars kept breaking over the years, so I finally bought men’s dress brown shoe laces and use that for my cord. It never breaks.

I remove mine right before I get in the shower and put it back on right after I’m out.

Hi everyone,

I was wanting to get some feedback from y’all to see how many of you wear the brown scapular (or other scapulars) and what led you to begin wearing them?

Thanks!
I wear the brown scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. I felt drawn to wear the scapular after reading about it, hearing about it, and studying up on it. I also was looking for something else that I could wear to express my faith since the wooden bead Our Lady of Guadalupe bracelet that I had worn practically every day for a year before that had stretched out too much, and was getting loose and unwearable. I felt like it would be really special to wear, and has really strengthened my spiritual life. By praying my rosary every day (a requirement that goes with wearing the brown scapular), I’m paying great devotion to God, Jesus, and Mary. I’m also feeling that I’m developing a greater appreciation for Mary. It’s also proven to be a great way to evangelize to other people! A lot of the times, although it’s meant to be worn under the clothing, the tops I wear expose it, and I’ve gotten a few questions about it and have had the chance to tell people what it is. It’s awesome :).

Same with me. I wear mine all the time except when I take a bath, and now I’ve decided to not wear it while I’m doing stuff that makes me super sweaty so that I don’t get my scapular all gross-smelling. But other than those two occasions, I wear mine all the time, even to bed.
